Athlete of the Week
10 Questions
with Charlotte Melgard
The recent New Trier
graduate will row at the
University of North Carolina
in the fall
Do you have any
superstitions before,
during or after a race?
Before every race, I’m
always the first seat, so before
every race I make sure
to grab or shake the girl’s
hand that’s behind me.
What’s one thing
people don’t know
about you?
My entire family is lefthanded.
What’s one thing on
your bucket list?
I really wanna go to
New Zealand. My dad
played rugby there and I’d
like to go see it.
What’s the best part
about being a New
Trier athlete?
The community of people.
The amount of friends
and support, it’s amazing.
I’ve made so many friends.
What’s the best advice
you’ve gotten?
Treat others the way
you want to be treated. My
mom always says that.
If you could play
another sport, what
would it be and why?
Rugby. No girls really
play, but my dad played
that growing up and it
looks like so much fun.
What’s been your
favorite moment at
New Trier?
This year, the graduation
party. Being with
all my friends, my whole
grade.
If you could have one
super power, what
would it be and why?
Being invisible.
What is the hardest
part about your sport?
The work outs. Rowing
is pretty much conditioning
all year. It’s hard to
stick with it, especially
since you don’t get to practice
outside until April. It’s
hard to stay motivated, but
when you get out in the
water, it’s a lot of fun.
Do you have a
favorite superhero?
Wonder Woman.
for us,’” he said. “They
know we won last year,
they know we went to the
Elite Eight, they know
who we are. And, so we
kind of just changed that
mindset that, ‘Oh, hey,
we’re not the underdogs,
sometimes. How do we
approach these matches
now that we’re supposed
to win in our mind?’”
In 2019, the Stars return
12 players from this year’s
roster and will be looking
to end the Springfield College
dynasty. Springfield
has played in all seven of
the NCAA Division III
national title games, winning
five, including the
last two.
But to not only knock
off the Pride, but also stay
toward the top of Division-III
teams, will be no
easy task. That is something
the young coach
fully realizes.
“Every year there’s going
to be more and more
competition and more
and more programs,” the
coach said. “So, yeah, going
into that this summer,
this is going to be my No.
1 goal, is to figure out, alright
how do we progress
from this. ‘Cause we lost
four tremendous seniors
from this team.
“I have to get these guys
to understand the return
is like, ‘OK, hey, this is
great what we did, but it’s
not just going to happen
again next year, because
it happened once.’ And I
think trying to get them
to understand a little bit
and then getting the freshman
that are coming in
onboard is going to be just
a really fun task for us.
But I gotta kind of impress
on them how important
it is for them to physically
and mentally be
prepared to take that next
step.”
Whether that next step
is a national championship,
however, will be
something everyone will
be watching for.
