MEMBERS and guests
had a most enjoyable
evening taking part in
Sheffield and District
Branch’s Treasure
Hunt, where all
answers were of course numbers. Even
the weather was kind to us and everyone
stayed dry! The Curzon, being housed in
the Grade II listed former building of the
Sheffield Banking Company, proved to be
an excellent venue.
Upon arrival, members made their
way to the upstairs bar for hot drinks
and biscuits and gathered into the teams
for the treasure hunt. Some 30 minutes
later the first two teams were briefed by
Chair Paula Uttley before setting off in
opposite directions to the words go, go,
go. The remaining teams were dispatched
at ten-minute intervals and all had just
60 minutes to complete the hunt and
return with all the answers to questions
like: ‘In what year was the Sheffield and
Hallamshire Bank built?’; ‘What number
do you dial for assistance from the Police
Box?’; and ‘approximately how many
feet does a standard chain of 30 links
measure?’ Teams could earn bonus points
for spotting the location of the five CICM
Sheffield by numbers
CICM Sheffield and District Branch
Magazine covers around the city and for
taking five specific team photos. All teams
made it back in time and, with a whopping
score of 255 points, congratulations went
to the winning team of Daniel Cherry of
Hays and Carl Jones of MD Law who were
each rewarded with a bottle of wine.
After all returning teams enjoyed their
well-earned liquid treasure drink tokens
and a very tasty antipasti supper, Graham
Walker of Hart Shaw took the floor. He
talked about the banking history of the
building, his banking past (including his
time working in that very building) and
gave his economic predictions for Brexit
and beyond. Graham provoked some
interesting and passioned debate from
members who, along with the Sheffield
and District Branch Committee, would
like to thank Graham for his valuable time
and excellent presentation.
Members then took the rare
opportunity to tour the original bank
vaults with manager Kym. It is safe to
say that any criminals back in the day
would have had their work cut out to get
through those vault doors, although one
section did look more like a prison than
a bank. The evening drew to a close and
members and guests were delighted to
leave with a CICM goodie bag containing
a coffee cup, drink mat, pen and even a
stick of CICM rock! Many thanks to CICM
HQ, The Curzon, Graham Walker, Jacky
Cooper (for marking the treasure hunts)
and all attending members and guests for
making the evening a great success.
AND so the virgins and the veterans of the
ten-pin bowling world descended on Lane
7 in Newcastle for an evening of fun and
competition.
Our 13 (unlucky for some) participants
were split across two lanes, where a
variety of styles began to emerge. Many
settled for the traditional Dambuster
That's how we roll
CICM North East Branch
‘bouncing bomb’, thus testing the strength
of the wooden flooring to its full capacity.
Others developed their own unique styles,
ranging from Ray’s ‘prancing horse’
to Stewarts equally effective ‘whirling
dervish’. However, once the dust (or was it
sawdust) settled, there was only one clear
winner.
Colin, with a very smooth consistent
approach, top-scored on 110, thus
immediately leaving himself open to
allegations of dark arts and a challenge
for a re-match. All good, clean fun as the
pictures confirm (courtesy of Angie, our
official photographer for the night)!
