Stop taking
Tramadol to drive
BY PHILIP ANTOH
philip.antoh@dailyheritage.com.gh
A ROAD Safety Advocate, Rev Charles
Ntim, popularly known as Moses, has advised
drivers in Ghana to stop driving
under the influence of drugs such as Tramadol
with the excuse that it prevents fatigue.
Rev Ntim said because the Ghana Police
Service had intensified regular alcohol
checks on various roads, drivers had resorted
to hard drugs such as Tramadol and
marijuana, which are very difficult for law
enforcement agencies to detect at first
sight.
He said this had increased the rate
of road accidents in the country since
the use of the drugs had negative effects
on the body, which could cause
fatal road crashes.
Rev Ntim gave this advice last Friday,
June 22, 2018, at the Kaneshie
Lorry Park during the National All
Drivers Prayer Summit organised by
Accident Victim’s Support in Accra.
He said the continuous use of a
local snuff popularly known as ‘asira’
blocks the veins and could cause
stroke and other attacks while driving.
“I want to use this opportunity to
appeal to all drivers in the country to
desist from using hard drugs to drive
because it can cause serious accident
on the road,” he stated.
In his sermon titled ‘Driver as a
Leader,’ the president of Ghanadrive,
Rev Erasmus Amankwah Addo, said
every driver is a leader and therefore
his/her deeds must bring inspiration
• Safety advocate tells drivers
to the people around him/her.
Rev Addo said “with a driver as a leader,
judgment must always be good so that it
does not affect the people under your
care.”
He said 90% of accidents in the country
are caused by human factors such as the
driver being under the influence of alcohol
or drugs, fatigue or speeding, a situation he
described as rampant in the country.
The founder of AVS, Rev Cyril Benedict
Crabbe, said the programme aimed at
creating awareness and for fundraising to
support accident victims in various hospitals
in the country.
Rev Crabbe said the campaign to engage
drivers in prayer to support accident victims
would fully start from August and run
till December, when the team would visit
the Achimota Lorry Park, the 37 Lorry Station
and finally end at Tema Station.
He is, therefore, appealing to the government,
philanthropists, corporate Ghana
and individuals to help feed the over 45 accident
victims currently under their care.
