FINISHING, CLEANING AND DEGREASING CLEAN AND BURR-FREE With increasing requirements for burr-free, clean components, there is growing focus on the technologies that can help manufacturers avoid the indignity of having parts rejected by customers for failing to meet these demands. Needless to say, for complex, tight-tolerance parts, the demands are even higher, which is why Walther Trowal has recently redesigned its CM vibratory system to ensure the optimised surface finishing of high-value workpieces like blisks for aeroplane and land-based turbines. The redesign is said to ensure that components receive a uniform, homogeneous, high-quality finish with repeatable results. To date, the surface finishing of blisks has been performed manually with grinding disks and other manually operated tools. Due to the ‘human factor’, the quality of the final finish could vary greatly between workpieces. The Walther Trowal CM system allows the deburring and general surface improvement of components with diameters of up to 980mm. Single workpieces are mounted to the inner dome of the processing bowl. After the grinding media has been filled into the bowl, a vibratory motor causes the complete work bowl to vibrate. This effect causes a constant ‘rubbing’ of the media against the fixed workpiece. Since the rubbing action is highly homogeneous, a uniform, even finish on all surface areas of the disk and blades is said to be achieved. After completion of the process, the surface roughness readings amount to Ra 0.2 to 0.4µm. Starting with an initial surface roughness of Ra 4 to 5µm, the desired finishing results are achieved within 5-6 hours. Compared with this method, the manual finishing of blisks can take several days. On the topic of vibratory bowl finishing, a recent entrant to the UK market is TAD, which now has systems available via TM Robotics. The TAD range of vibrating and electromagnetic feeding bowls includes bespoke bowl-feeding systems that are customised for clients in niche industries, or manufacturers with specific challenges. Each feeding system meets demands such as the positioning of geometrically complex parts, gentle handling and high frequency rates. For example, TAD feeding systems for food and beverage industry components are designed to comply with all FDA regulations. Every bowl feeder in this range is made of AISI 304 or 316L stainless steel with mirror-polished, electro-polished or projected polyurethane finishes, ensuring high levels of hygiene. Guyson is a familiar name in product finishing, and in another industry development worthy of note, has recently updated its showroom facilities in Skipton to better reflect its range of manual blast cabinets, as well as its offer for finishing parts made using additive manufacturing techniques. Customers visiting the company’s showroom can now be walked through the range of standard Formula and Euroblast suction-fed manual blast cabinets, trying each for size. These blast cabinets are complemented with a range of matching dust collectors; some fully connected up to their blast cabinets to show complete systems. Application-specific blast systems on display in the showroom include the Guyson Wheelmaster, which is designed for blastetching alloy wheels, and incorporates many special handling features that enable the operator to use this wheel blasting system safely, without heavy lifting. From an additive manufacturing component perspective, there is an 8m-wide display unit that presents a 3D rendering of the company’s latest robotically controlled finishing station and powder recovery system. Of course, once parts have been finished, there is usually a requirement for final washing operations. At Runcorn-based Husco International, a specialist in hydraulic and electrohydraulic controls, a number of MecWash parts-washing systems have been installed. In fact, Husco commissioned its first MecWash Midi for use at the company’s European headquarters in Runcorn, in 2000. Since then, the company has installed a further six cleaning systems. Another two machines will be delivered this year, totalling nine MecWash systems altogether. “Solid particle contamination can interfere with the lubrication process in hydraulic fluid systems, causing wear to the components that can result in additional maintenance and repair costs, and a substantial decrease in the system’s service life,” explains Husco’s senior manufacturing engineer Mike Gandy. Worn components can eventually lead to the seizure of parts, higher fluid temperatures, leaks and reduced control. Contamination can also damage the system’s fluid by accelerating oxidation – again resulting in inefficient operation. “All of our parts must be free from contamination before they reach the assembly line, where even the smallest levels of contamination can have significant longterm effects,” says Mike Gandy. “The MecWash machines are renowned within the hydraulic industry for achieving high cleanliness, which is the main reason we continue to invest in this technology.” The Midi and its replacement system, the MWX400, clean hydraulic control valves used in off-highway applications, including agricultural machinery, materials handling and construction, to the exacting standards demanded by customers around the world. Adds Mike Gandy: “With the introduction of our new Trinity Cell One at Runcorn, which is now completed, we are commencing the installation of the planned Trinity Cell Two. The continued investment in cleaning equipment from MecWash ensures our customers get the highest quality hydraulic valves to meet their stringent cleanliness standards.” Recent developments in parts-cleaning technology could be seen at the MACH 2018 exhibition at the NEC earlier this year. Turbex, for example, launched its ProLine 2 range of automated cleaning lines, which is intended for high levels of precision cleaning assisted by multi-frequency ultrasonics. According to the company, cycle times can be significantly shorter and there is the added advantage that dissimilar components and materials can be processed in the same tank. Promoted also for the first time in the UK was targeted cleaning, rinsing and drying technology in a single-chamber machine. Again available from Turbex, the machine works alongside a global spray-flood action coupled with controllable kinematics and rotatable ultrasonic transducers. The targeted/global tandem process is intended for efficient and reliable removal of swarf, oil and other contaminants from difficult-toreach areas of components. Machinery World, July 2018 29
