24 lake luzerne Originally, Luzerne was part of the “Town of Queensbury Tract” beyond the mountain at its western edge (their west part of town), and the place was called Westfield, which was obligated to stand on its own feet and organize itself into a township. At the end of the Revolutionary War with England, Westfield became known as Fairfield and incorporated as a township on April 10, 1792 when the town of Queensbury relinquished their ‘west’ tract. The Town later became known as Luzerne until 1963 when Lake was added to Luzerne to form its present name of Lake Luzerne. For the history buffs this summer season will include local history events with reenactors, displays, speakers and cowboys on July 28, with Ambassadors on duty at the Rockwell-Harmon Cottage and visitor center, the Gailey Hill School House, the Kinnear House Museum of Local History and the Pagenstecher Pulp Mill Museum. During July and August the four historic sites along Main Street will be staffed with Ambassadors from Thursdays to Sundays 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. All museums are within a three-block walking distance. You will fall in love with our past, present and future, especially along the Indian Trail from the river to the lake. This leisurely stroll between “Museums on Main Street” is a village delight and very pet friendly. The real treat is being surrounded by flowing waters from Lake Luzerne to Wells Creek to the Mighty Hudson River’s narrowest and most picturesque location - Rockwell Falls. it’s breathtaking and a photo shoot moment from the Bridge of Hope, but the roar of the falls is most enchanting from the shoreline behind the Rockwell- Harmon Cottage; it’s a perfect spot to relax and enjoy an ice cream cone. Additional highlighted attractions include the year-round Adirondack Folk School for the joy of hands-on learning the arts, crafts and customs of the Adirondacks. All classes of music are offered during the summer in Lake Luzerne. There are concerts by students and professionals at the world renown Luzerne Music Camp, and free Tuesday Night Concerts at Colonel Butler Pavilion Park. For those looking for outdoor adventure, Lake Luzerne is fast becoming known as “Adventure Row” it’s the place for thrills and chills. With plenty of opportunities and activities for river paddling, tubing, floating, rafting, canoeing, kayaking, boarding, hiking, Reach our advertisers at: biking, rodeo and horseback riding with guided mountaintop dinner rides available. New this year, we add to the list of adventures a family-fun zip line, with age appropriate zones. And, hopefully the opening of the Harris Land Preserve which borders NY State property with trails to the top of Potash Mountain will be complete soon. Here, the Hudson River squeezes into a narrow gorge, tumbling over the dramatic Rockwell Falls. Water from the Great Sacandaga Lake joins the river in a flurry of white water. Further downstream, the river widens into “The Bay,” a stretch of water broad enough for water skiing. For those who seek quiet water, a chain of four beautiful lakes offer fishing, camping and boating with two public swimming beaches on Lake Luzerne itself. Lake Luzerne has catered to visitors since President Grant came to the area for rest and recreation after the Civil War. The grand old hotels of that day have given way to modern inns and restaurants while new tennis and basketball courts, miniature golf and four local history museums, along with summer concerts and craft shows, offer a variety of family fun. Nearby, Lake Luzerne Music camp attracts world-class musicians. In winter, snowmobilers can ride over 200 miles of forest trails. The Rodeo is still going strong after more than 50 years and several stables along Route 9N still offer horseback riding. Just north of the Bridge of Hope, across the Hudson River to Hadley is the most narrow point of the entire Hudson River, Rockwell Falls south of the bridge the Sacandaga and the Hudson River meet (confluence) allowing flat water to Corinth.
