Hunters Hill heritage
pops up on street boxes
HUNTERS Hill’s utility boxes have come alive with heritage
posters.
The posters depict
street scenes from
Hunters Hill’s Victorian
and Edwardian
era and are taken from
historic photographs.
The idea for the utility
art was first proposed
by The Weekly
Times to Emeritus
Mayor Sue Hoopmann
several years ago with
the idea of celebrating
Hunters Hill’s sesquicentenary
with images
from the days when
the muncipality was
known as the French
village.
Councillor Justine
McLaughlin acknowledged
the contribution
of the Public Art
Committee and the
Sign Vision company,
which braved wet
weather this week to
get the job done.
“The Public Art Committee
is made up of
Annie Goodman from
Council, myself and
“The historic images
reflect the social history
of the area in
which they are located
and we deliberately
avoided photos of just
buildings where possible
because in many
cases, those buildings
are still there!
“We concentrated on
images of the people
and social interaction
that would have been
happening in and
around those buildings.
“For example down
in Woolwich there is
a great image of kids
about to jump into the
Woolwich baths, and
garages that used to
be along that strip.
“Outside the Council
Chambers there is
resident NOW IN Virginia SIX Wise LANGUAGES! a great image of the
and our other projects agenda for the first
have included the Council Meeting ever
sculpture in the Village,”
Clr McLaughlin ity.
held in the Municipal-
said.
“The Hunters Hill
Gladesville Road there Councillor McLaughlin
said more work
are images of the old
rowing sheds at Tarban
Creek and images “My personal bug
needs to be done.
of the cars at the old bear are the utility
Historical Society
were an enormous
help as was St Joseph’s
College.
“We even sat down
with the Marist Sisters
in their nursing
homes to try to source
images from their collections
as well, as we
wanted to reflect their
contribution to the
area.”
Mayor Mark Bennett
recognised the role of
The Weekly Times.
“The idea was first
put forward by The
Weekly Times correspondent
in Hunters
Hill to highlight our
boxes on the centre
verge at the overpass,”
she said.
“We need to get
those covered next.
Ideally we would love
to obtain a sponsor
or benefactor to
help with the cost involved.”
