With a starting breeze of 8 to 10 knots the final
day’s racing got off to a brisk start, Martin Tanco’s
Centennial II was tied on 7 points with Standard
Insurance Centennial III and with all at stake, a three
way cat and mouse game developed in the prestart,
with George Hackett’s Misty Mountain nailing the
start line and Centennial II blocking Centennial III
way. They soon settled into the respective places
and both Misty Mountain
and Centennial II taking
the central symmetric
spinnaker path down the
center of the course, paid
off to eclipse Centennial
III by a few seconds in
the handicap stakes. It
was all on again in the
second race and although
visually Centennial III seemed to be far enough in
front as the breeze faded, it wasn’t to be as Tanco’s
Centennial II corrected out in front and claimed the
IRC A title.
Freewheeler continued
to have engine
problems and forced
them into retiring
from racing.
Overcoming the first race navigational error, Jun
Avecilla’s in Selma Star won every other race on
corrected time, to seal the IRC B title. Ricky Sandoval
in Selma kept them honest with the first race of the
regatta win, then trading 2nd and 3rd places with
Michael Ashbrook’s Sitka, resulted in ending up
tied on 11 points and broken in favor of Sandoval’s
Selma. Sitka needs consistent stronger breeze for
their asymmetric spinnaker to pay dividends, but as
the only entry from Hong Kong this year they done
well on their first attempt at a Philippine regatta and
vowed to be back again next year.
David Wheeler’s Freewheeler continued to have
engine problems and forced them into retiring from
racing, ending their challenge on the Cruising Class
title. This left the door open for Alexa to race away
with the title, with a day to spare. The only multihull
competing, Garry Kingshott’s Kerida lacks speed
upwind but makes up for it on the downwind legs
and on the onshore social scene.
ATRAM Philippine Sailing Championship
The Commodore’s Cup is also the final regatta of
the 5 event 2016 / 17 ATRAM Philippine Sailing
Championship, with the best 4 regattas to count and
the first place trophies were awarded to class winners
and the Overall Champion on Saturday night. The
Commodore’s Cup produced some very exciting
racing with between 10 and 17 knots every day and
many changes in the overall Championship results.
The Championship consists of 5 events:November
Puerto Galera All Souls Regatta, January Punta
Fuego Yacht Club Regatta, February Standard
Insurance Subic to Boracay Race and Boracay Cup
March PHINSAF Nasugbu to Busuanga Race.
