Dear Parents,
As we are about to break up for the summer we do say goodbye to some colleagues who are
moving on to pastures new and I wish them all the best for the future. A special mention must go
to Mr Burke and Joe Hopkins. They have worked extremely hard to support the needs of our
students and we wish them every success as they start their new careers as the Head of Fernwood
school and the Lead Lay Chaplain at the St Ralph Sherwin CMAT. I also look forward to
welcoming some new colleagues in September and I hope that they will have a very successful
career here at CtK.
May I take this opportunity to thank you once more for your support and kind messages during
the last few weeks. During the break, building work will commence including newly refurbished
student toilets in the upstairs of the Main Building and of course the new Music suite.
May I remind you that the new term will begin on Wednesday 5 th September for Year 7 and the
Sixth Form, all other students will start on Thursday 6 th.
Wishing you all a very happy summer break and I look forward to seeing you all in September.
Best wishes.
LITERACY REWARD TRIP
Students who have really made an extra effort with their
reading this year were taken on a reward trip to Grimm & Co.
Through a hidden door in a magical bookcase, 30 CtK students
travelled to an apothecary’s writing workshop where they spent
the morning crafting comedic pieces of writing on a course
developed by The League of Gentlemen’s Jeremy Dyson. The
session concluded with a slide down a giant’s beanstalk into the
Grimm and Co. gift shop. A great time was had by all!
Data Protection
Images of individuals, whether in still photographs or moving film images, will often be caught by the
definition of personal data in the Data Protection Act. In many cases consent from the individuals will need
to be obtained in order to process (capture and use) the images fairly and lawfully. If you have
photographed a person, you will need their permission to use the image. This will be particularly
pertinent for the Portrait category.
I confirm that I consent for the image of me to be used in this competition:
CAREERS NEWS
It has been a busy month for our Academies Careers Programme:
During the week of 25th – 29th June, 137 Year 10 students attended a work experience
placement with a range of employers including placements assisting a Registrar with minor
operations at the QMC; developing a portfolio for a development with an architects firm;
supporting elderly residents within a residential care home and gaining experience of music
production at a recording studio.
A group of Year 10 students also represented young people from within Gedling Borough at the
Gedling Borough Council European Apprenticeships fair. These students met employers offering
a host of apprenticeships within the EU as well as colleges offering qualifications in engineering,
horticulture, healthcare and construction. We are delighted to confirm that a handful of students
have successfully secured an apprenticeship or a part-time job with their employer as a result of
their work experience placement.
On Wednesday 4th July, our academy welcomed twenty five employers from a range of
employment sectors to ‘speed-network’ with our Year 10 students. Students had 8 minutes to
meet with each employer and ask them pertinent questions about careers in their industries.
Alongside this, students participated in two workshops , offering practical insights into careers in
Constructions, Optometry ( Specsavers), the Army and Engineering.
On Friday 13th July, thirty Year 7 and 8 students also attended The Digital Skills Show - an event
hosted by a range of employers within the digital sector, participating in interactive workshops
exploring careers in Coding, Robotics, Gaming, Engineering and the media.
Year 12 have also participated in a live WebChat with the National Careers Service where they
were guided through the process of drafting a personal statement for their University UCAS
applications. I cannot recommend this service enough – the National Careers Service offer free,
independent advice and guidance on careers – if you or your child are searching for guidance on
choices, you can speak to an advisor, 7 days a week, on Freephone: 0800 100 900
Look out in the new
academic year for a range
of new books hitting the
shelves. Replacements for
worn out favourites, such
as Tom Gates, to new and
exciting ranges like
The Underland
Chronicles
by author Suzanne Collins,
who is perhaps better
known for
The Hunger Games
On Wednesday 11th July,
30 incredibly hard working
students attended a reward
trip to
Grimm & Co
The total number of words
read by years 7 and 8 so far
this year is an amazing:
75,865,831
Year 7 total: 40,441,068
Year 8 total: 35,424,763.
Well done everybody!
D.E.A.R. time is
extending into year 9
next year. All students
will be encouraged to
travel across each
area of literature and
complete a literacy
passport as proof of
their journey.
STRIDE FOR LIFE
On Tuesday 17 th July, members of the school community participated in the CTK Stride
for Life, a 1km charity walk/run to raise money for the Breast
Institute at Nottingham City Hospital. We prayed for sunshine
and we were blessed with clear skies and lots of enthusiastic
participants from all areas of the school, including some very
energetic Year 7 runners who completed the course in a 3
legged fashion! Participants after school also enjoyed a
wonderful selection of
homemade refreshments made
by staff and students from our
Polish club and a group of our talented music students
entertained visitors with a medley of tunes as they browsed the
tombola and raffle.
Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of staff, students and
their families, we have so far managed to raise over £1100 for
the Breast Institute. I would also like to take this opportunity to personally thank everyone for
their support over the past few months whilst I have been undergoing treatment.
If anyone would like to make a donation to the fundraising appeal, our Justgiving link can be
