CAREERS NEWS It has been a busy month for our Academies Careers Programme: During the week of 25th – 29th June, 137 Year 10 students attended a work experience placement with a range of employers including placements assisting a Registrar with minor operations at the QMC; developing a portfolio for a development with an architects firm; supporting elderly residents within a residential care home and gaining experience of music production at a recording studio. A group of Year 10 students also represented young people from within Gedling Borough at the Gedling Borough Council European Apprenticeships fair. These students met employers offering a host of apprenticeships within the EU as well as colleges offering qualifications in engineering, horticulture, healthcare and construction. We are delighted to confirm that a handful of students have successfully secured an apprenticeship or a part-time job with their employer as a result of their work experience placement. On Wednesday 4th July, our academy welcomed twenty five employers from a range of employment sectors to ‘speed-network’ with our Year 10 students. Students had 8 minutes to meet with each employer and ask them pertinent questions about careers in their industries. Alongside this, students participated in two workshops , offering practical insights into careers in Constructions, Optometry ( Specsavers), the Army and Engineering. On Friday 13th July, thirty Year 7 and 8 students also attended The Digital Skills Show - an event hosted by a range of employers within the digital sector, participating in interactive workshops exploring careers in Coding, Robotics, Gaming, Engineering and the media. Year 12 have also participated in a live WebChat with the National Careers Service where they were guided through the process of drafting a personal statement for their University UCAS applications. Look out in the new academic year for a range of new books hitting the shelves. Replacements for worn out favourites, such as Tom Gates, to new and exciting ranges like The Underland Chronicles by author Suzanne Collins, who is perhaps better known for The Hunger Games On Wednesday 11th July, 30 incredibly hard working students attended a reward trip to Grimm & Co The total number of words read by years 7 and 8 so far this year is an amazing: 75,865,831 Year 7 total: 40,441,068 Year 8 total: 35,424,763. Well done everybody! D.E.A.R. time is extending into year 9 next year. All students will be encouraged to travel across each area of literature and complete a literacy passport as proof of their journey. Ms Henley
