Colourful makeover
for High St
An iconic central city street has received a
colourful makeover. A 50m fence made up
of panels, which runs along High St, between
Cashel and Lichfield Sts, has been given a new
look by a group of Ara Institute of Canterbury
students as part of the city council’s enliven
places programme. The group chose bright
colours to reflect their optimism for the city’s
future. The section of High St used to house
Flying Nun Records, Galaxy Records and a
popular Chinese takeaway. Those landmarks
are referenced in some of the designs that
make up the panels.
New food court for
central city
A mini-food court is being established on an
empty site in the central city, with some of the
old favourites from Re:Start to base themselves
there.
A number of food and beverage carts are
moving to vacant land at 200 High St, opposite
Stencil, which will become known as 03 Eatery.
It was born from a desire to activate vacant
space and to turn it into a gathering place.
Vendors to be based there include A Mouse
Called Bean, The Burger Joint, Smoke ‘n’ Barrel
Street Food ‘n’ Catering, Pure Pulp, Herba
Gourmet, Gelatiamo, Tiki Taco, Fritz’s Wieners
and Marie’s Lebanese.
Herba Gourmet owner Kerry Hastings said the
feedback so far had been positive.
Herba had been on the site for about two
weeks, but others were yet to set up, she said.
“It’s going to look amazing and be a fantastic
spot.”
An 03 Eatery launch party will be held in the
coming weeks to celebrate.
The Wise
Guys opens
A new 1920s bar
and restaurant is
open on Victoria St.
The Wise Guys Bar
and Restaurant has
opened in the same
space The Good Goat
was based before
closing its doors within
months of opening.
The Wise Guys is open
for breakfast and
lunch daily.
What’s
for lunch?
Lux Espresso
66 Gloucester Street
There’s very few things I love more than
a tasty, well put together sammie.
So imagine my delight when I visited
Lux Espresso.
Sandwiches are the star of the show
in the Gloucester St eatery’s cabinet,
which is in CoCA.
It had croissants, sandwich melts,
schiacciata, along with sweet treats and
salads to choose from.
I ordered a J. Friend honey and
mustard glazed ham schiacciata.
Toasted? Yes please.
It was filled with a decent amount of
sweet glazed ham, spinach and cheese,
inside the toasted olive oil-laden
schiacciata.
I was told to go early as the small
eatery became busy at lunchtime and
the sandwiches often sold out. It was
just as well.
After I finished eating the place filled
up, as did the seats in the suntrap
outdoor area.
If you’re after a simple, yet delicious
sandwich, I’d recommend Lux. At $10,
they are good value for money. But
the coffee, although good, is on the
expensive side.
