Dir: Elia Suleiman. Cast: Ali Sulman, Elia Suleiman, Saleh Bakri
Partly autobiographical, Elia Suleiman writes, directs and stars in this sweeping,
comedy and political farce with intimate family memories and tense scenes of
abuse at the hands of Israelis. Fusing the political and personal, the historical and
Lebanon 1hr 33mins Cert 15 Hebrew/Arabic/French w/subs
Dir: Samuel Maoz. Cast: Reymond Amsalem, Ashraff Barhom, Oshri Cohen
Winner of the top prize at the Venice Film Festival, Samuel Maoz’s
autobiographical account of his traumatising experiences during the Israeli
invasion of Lebanon follows four young soldiers and a tank on a mission to
search a small town. This seemingly simple mission goes horribly wrong and
they find themselves in a violent situation that they cannot contain. Set entirely
within the confines of the tank, we see only what the soldiers see of the hostile
world outside, creating the same kind of gripping claustrophobic intensity of
Wolfgang Petersen’s submarine classic Das Boot.
