LONDON ASSURANCE
by Dion Boucicault, Directed by Nicholas Hytner,
starring Richard Briers
Sir Harcourt Courtly is lured away from the epicentre of
fashionable London by the promise of a rich and beautiful
bride, Grace, several decades his junior. Arriving at Oak Hall,
Gloucestershire, he marvels at this rural Venus until her
charms are eclipsed by her hearty cousin, the foxhunting Lady
Gay Spanker. Meanwhile Sir Harcourt Courtly’s dissolute son,
Charles, turns up - in disguise and in flight from his creditors
- and promptly falls head over heels for Grace. When Lady
VIVA SANTANA
A phenomenal explosion of Latin rock,
celebrating the music of the legendary Carlos
Santana, as soloist and inspirational Spanish
guitarist Marcos Rodriguez creates a musical
bridge between Cuba and Spain. The band
faithfully recreates classics such as Santana
1, Abraxas, Moonflower, Supernatural,
Shaman and All That I Am, all performed
with such raw emotion and consummate
skill. The powerful rhythm section, echoing
a latin heartbeat with the beat of timbales,
drums and bass, blends beautifully with the
infectious sound of Cuban piano and soulful,
haunting vocals.
Set in the late 70’s America in the grips of an outbreak of Lyme
Director: Jan Kounen. Cast: Starring: Anna Mouglalis, Mads Mikkelsen, Elena Morozova
Picking up the story more or less where last year’s Coco Before Chanel left off, this
sumptuous duel biopic captures the charisma of two monumental personalities against the
opulent backdrop of 1920s Paris. Coco attends the premier of Stravinsky’s modernist ballet
The Rite of Spring, and is mesmerised, while most of the audience greet it with boos. Years
later, Coco is re-introduced to Stravinsky, now a penniless refugee living in exile in Paris.
She invites Stravinsky and his family to stay in her new villa and it is not long before an
intense love affair between two creative giants begins.
Bluebeard 1hr 20mins Cert tbc French w/subs
Dir: Catherine Breillat. Cast: Dominique Thomas, Lola Créton, Daphné Baiwir
In the attic of a 1950’s house Catherine torments her timed sister with repeated dramatic
readings of Charles Perrault’s 17th century story of a wife murdering nobleman with a blue
beard. As she does so Perrault’s macabre fairytale plays out. Marie-Catherine is a young
woman who proves to be more than a match for Bluebeard’s murderous ways when she
marries him in order to save her mother and older sister from a life of poverty. Catherine
Breillat’s feminist retelling of this classic story alternates between past and present,
childhood and adolescence, fact and fiction (that she shares her name with her characters
is no accident) and continues her exploration of sexual politics and sibling rivalry.
Gainsbourg 2hrs 15mins Cert 15 French w/subs
Dir: Joann Sfar. Cast: Eric Elmosnino, Laetitia Casta, Lucy Gordon, Yolande Moreau.
Singer, writer, composer and painter, but mostly full time provocateur, Serge Gainsbourg
was a larger than life character, and this flamboyant biopic more than does justice to his
turbulent and glamorous life. From growing up in Nazi occupied Europe to sharing his bed
with Brigitte Bardot and Jane Birkin, his colourful personality shines through thanks to
immersive performances and sumptuous set designs and cinematography. Directed by best
selling comic book artist Joann Sfar, the film is embellished with animations and puppetry
and has the style and panache of Amelie and La Vie en Rose.
A couple of
messages from
“There’s a wonderful atmosphere
at The Roses - everyone makes
you feel very welcome. I love
live theatre of any sort - comedy,
drama, ballet, opera - and we
get the lot here. In fact, I’d say that the opera ‘live from the Met’ is better
than being there.
Of course there’s a lot more to the Roses than what’s on the stage. There’s
marvellous work behind the scenes with the work in schools and community.
Many people don’t realise The Roses is a charity that’s why I’ve donated
over the years as well as buying tickets. For me The Roses is the jewel in
Tewkesbury’s crown.” Roy Smith
What I love about The Roses...
“You get such wonderful variety at The Roses - and they manage to cater for
all tastes and all ages! It really is a lovely theatre.
We’ve always been hugely impressed by what the theatre does for
the youngsters, anything that gives kids a focus, an interest and great
entertainment gets our vote. We give regularly by standing order - just a
little every month - to what we consider is a wonderful charity.
