Dir: Akira Kurosawa. Cast: Toshiro Mifune, Machiko Kyo, Masayuki Mori,
Takasho Shimura
60 years after its release, Akira Kurosawa’s brilliant exploration of
truth and human fallibility remains a classic of world cinema, ranking
high in critic’s polls of best films ever made and continuing to influence
modern film making. Set in 12th century Japan, it presents four different
viewpoints of a rape and murder in the forest. Each witness reveals a little
more detail, but which, if any is telling the truth? Through the ingenious
use of flashbacks, imagery and editing, this superbly constructed film
manages to be both entertaining and intellectually stimulating.
