Editorial
You will see the cover picture is from a sketch from our very own
resident artist Gary Mayes of Brockdish. This was compiled a few
months ago when the grass was actually green rather than what we
currently see today! I’m sure many of you will recognise the location.
I was pleased to receive a good number of enquiries to the newly
formed Oil purchasing syndicate, whilst central heating is currently
not on the top of our list of priorities forward planning can help in
more ways than one. We hope to have our first bulk delivery in the
middle of August. Not only will we be saving money, but we will be
reducing the number of deliveries on our country lanes.
BROCKDISH PARISH COUNCIL (Including Thorpe Abbotts)
CHAIRMAN – Christine Mackenzie
Clerk – Teresa Hines Tel: 01379 308617
Big changes on the Common: we now have a bench in the
middle, built by Oscar Housego in memory of his grandfather,
and a picnic table by the River Waveney generously
donated anonymously. In addition 'Chip' and Penny Chipperfield
have donated the plastic sheeting to prevent weeds around the
benches and 'Tree Menders' have donated wood chips to
complete the project. We are also indebted to Gareth Leech for
his considerable practical help in putting it all together.
10

Parish Council
So ....... why not take a stroll, take the dog or take the children
for a picnic and a paddle during the school holidays. The
Parish Council intends to continue a programme of clearing
some areas for children to play but we do need help. It would
take a few volunteers one Sunday morning a month to keep it
looking good - if you would like to help please contact
Christine Mackenzie (Chairman 01379 668818) or Derek Clark
(Vice Chairman 01379 669201)
One further request: if you are taking your dog, please clear
up after it - most do but some don't, and if you're going for a
picnic please take your litter home. That would help everyone
to enjoy the area.
We were pleased to welcome representatives of village
organisations at the Annual Parish meeting held on 29 th May
at the Waveney Heritage Centre – thank you Geoff and Tim
for making us welcome. This meeting was followed by the
Parish Council meeting where Cllr Christine MacKenzie was
re-elected as Chairman with Derek Clark elected as Vice
Chairman, Christopher Wolfe and Fay Fitch agreed to
continue as Councillors for another year. We are in need of
additional Councillors as we currently have three vacancies
and our meetings are held monthly (no meetings in April,
August or December). If you would like to support and make a
difference to your community please contact us for further
information.
Thorpe Abbotts Telephone Box As previously reported the
telephone box has been adopted by the Parish Council and
the telephony equipment was removed. The suggested use
from residents is a ‘book swap scheme’, however we would
like to recruit volunteers to operate/organise the scheme plus
shelving will need to be installed in the phone box as well as
cleaning and painting. Please contact us if you are able to
help.
11

Parish Council
Neighbourhood Watch At a recent meeting a Brockdish
resident enquired about this in the village. We are aware that
some areas of the village are active and watched by
volunteers whilst others are not! If you are interested in
volunteering, then please contact us so that a meeting can be
arranged.
Bench A new bench has been purchased and is sited
alongside the footpath leading from the Kissing Gate to
Brockdish Church. Many thanks to Kelvin Halifax and Robert
Buck for kindly volunteering to transport and site the bench.
Hemp in the Waveney Valley
© Elaine Murphy
Let’s get this straight; I’m not talking about the type of hemp
that produces cannabis/hash/marijuana. There may be some
of that grown in the Waveney Valley but best forget about that.
Different strains of Cannabis sativa plants produce vastly
different concentrations of the active ingredient of marihuana,
TetrahydroCannabinol (THC). The strain of Cannabis sativa
that produces cloth has less than 0.3% of THC.
A field of hemp grown for cloth.
Small scale flax and hemp production was once widespread
throughout the eastern counties, but by Tudor times it had
become concentrated in the Waveney valley on the borders of
Norfolk and Suffolk, following a line ten miles wide along the
Waveney Valley, running from Eye to Beccles. Acts of
Parliament of 1533 and 1563 required all farmers of sixty or
19

Local History
more acres to grow a quarter of an acre of hemp or flax, which
was needed for making clothing, ropes, rigging and sails. This
edict stayed in place until 1593; necessary it was thought
because farmers were reluctant to grow hemp because it was
an unreliable crop and the processing to extract the fibres
gave off a terrible stink.
. In Praise of Hempseed
20

Local History
A long rambling nonsense poem of 1620 by John Taylor “In
Praise of Hempseed” (cover plate shown below) described the
various uses of hemp but also waxed lyrical about the
medicinal properties of the seed, against “All Dropsies, Colics,
Jaundices, or Scabs, Gangreens, Ulcers, wounds, and mortal
stabs” but also pointed out that the hangman’s rope was made
of hemp and hemp fibres were made into paper, sacks and the
seeds produced oil too.
Sweet sacred Muses, my invention raise
Unto the life, to write great Hempseeds praise.
This grain growes to a stalk, whose coat or skin
Good industry doth hatchell, twist, and spin,
And for mans best advantage and availes
It makes clothes, cordage, halters, ropes and sailes .
The ultra-smelly process of ‘retting’, separating the embedded
fibre from the flax stem through partial rotting was done by
immersing the harvested crop in water The rotting was brought
about by a complex enzyme action of microbes naturally
present in retting water. Retting ponds can still be seen on old
maps but no-one wanted to live near one. Fields and
properties nearby might be called 'Hemplands' or 'Hempfield',
such as Little Hemplands, the Syleham parish clerk’s house,
still with that name and Great Hemplands, clearly visible on
the tithe map of Syleham drawn in 1839. Syleham Green had
a ‘retting pit pightle’. There were other retting pits at Eye and
Scole and it is thought the River Waveney could also be used
for retting, so that was possibly where the Brockdish hemp
harvest was retted. Arthur Young, the great agricultural
observer, recorded 8 acres of hemp being grown in Brockdish
when he visited in 1802. There were also many public houses
called The Hemp Sheaf; the one in Stradbroke that closed in
the 1980s is now a private house.
21

Local History
Hempen linen was noted for its hardwearing qualities. Both
hemp and flax were used in the process of making linen but
the climate and soil in south Norfolk seemed to suit hemp
rather than flax and flax needs much more labour then hemp
to grow and harvest. Hemp grown for making ship cables and
canvas or for sacking needs a well manured and damp soil,
yet a poorer soil is good for fine and slender linen fibres. In the
17th century Diss became the centre for the collection and
distribution of Waveney Valley Hempen Cloth at its Cloth Hall,
or Weavers’ Hall, at The Saracen’s Head Inn. It is reported
that in the 18 th century one eighth of the British hemp
production occurred in the Waveney Valley.
The Saracen’s Head, Mount St, Diss,
Weavers or Cloth Hall in 17 th century.
22

Local History
The cultivation of hemp fitted in well with the other types of
agriculture, as it needed little attention during the summer
months, the busiest time for arable farmers. It could also be
grown on the same plot year after year with little or no
deterioration in its yield. When grown in the damp Waveney
Valley bottom on well-manured ground, the crop grew tall, lush
and coarse, like a 12 foot high nettle, suitable for ropes and
sacking, while on thinner and less well-manured land the crop
was less vigorous but the fibres finer, so it could be used for
clothing, especially working men’s smocks. Hemp was also
extensively grown in countless small plots and after retting, the
fibres were often processed in the home and spun into cloth
by the womenfolk.
In the Norfolk Record Office there is an anonymous diary of a
Brockdish farmer, now believed to be the Syleham parish clerk
[thanks to Stephen Poulter for sussing out who the diarist
was]. The diarist’s observations in 1793 went like this:
Jan 21 King of France beheaded.
February 13 died Mr Coleman.
Very dry summer, turnips failed greatly, hemp bad crop, wheat
good, barley, oats, peas and beans very light.
Oct 20 Queen of France beheaded.
[Mr Coleman was a farmer who lived at New Ditch Farm,
Brockdish]
There is also mention of hemplands in the will of Daniel
Spalding, who lived at The Grange in the early 18 th century.
When he died in 1733 his fragmentary, incomplete will
mentions an estate of hemplands ‘purchased of Mr Palgrave’.
Thomas Palgrave, the rector of Brockdish, died some years
earlier, in 1724.
23

Local History
Machine for making hemp fibres into sisal circa 1880
Hemp production died out in Victorian times when cheap
hemp was imported from abroad and it was no longer
economical to grow and process it here.
THE MARDLER GARDENER AKA PANSY’S POTTERINGS
"What wondrous life is this I lead!
Ripe apples drop about my head,
The luscious clusters of the vine
Upon my mouth do crush their wine,
The nectarine and curious peach
Into my hands themselves do reach,
Stumbling on melons, as I pass,
Ensnared with flowers, I fall on grass."
Andrew Marvell
Cyclamen hederifolium is coming into flower and leaf after its
summer dormancy, and you can plant it now under trees or in
borders for a late summer and autumn carpet.
Take root cuttings of mint.
Give lavender plants a light trim all over as soon as the flowers
are past. Use shears and take off just an inch or so of this
year’s growth, to stimulate bushing out from below.
Some simple seed saving, let a few of your lettuce and other
salad leaf plants that are past their best go to seed, collect
them up and use to produce leaves in abundance next year.
Winter radishes are very different from summer types, hotter in
flavour and perfect for cooking.
The end of this month is the perfect time to start planting garlic
bulbs for cropping next year.
Start planting onion sets now.
Summer Treasure Hunt
in Harleston
Take part in the Harleston Summer Treasure
Hunt to put your detective skills to the test.
Buy a leaflet for £1 from Robinsons Traditional
Stationers or the Swan Hotel and have a chance of winning a £25
prize voucher. Closing date 31st August.
The leaflet will guide you on a trail round the town and you will
need to answer some questions and identify some photographs
where the answer will be in the nearby surroundings. Finally, you
will need to look at the beautiful GoGoHare sculpture situated at St
John’s Church and answer a question about the hare. The
Treasure Hunt can be taken by one person or by a group, (only
one leaflet is needed by a group). Good luck!
More details about the GoGoHare and information about Harleston
events and news can be found at www.visitharleston.org.uk
A huge thank you to all who helped and attended the open
garden event in June. You helped raise over £1,000 for the
upkeep of the Church building.
Needless to say none of this would have taken place if not for
the kindness and generosity of the owners of the Grange and
the Grove who made their gardens available.
The pet service in June was well attended by humans and pets
alike! It was a great atmosphere with 14 dogs, 1 cat, 2
chickens, 1 giant African snail and Clarence the Llama. Thank
you to all who attended and taking part in a most enjoyable
afternoon.
We look forward to next year.
All Saints Church, Thorpe Abbotts
When the Chelmsford Motor Club wrote to advise of their
intended rally on Saturday 16 th June we decided that this was
an event not to be missed. The rally was primarily held on land
which was Thorpe Abbotts airfield but there was a navigational
course set through our village. It was therefore decided to invite
people along to the pump to watch the cars go by and have
some refreshments with friends and neighbours.. So a big thank
you to all who came along and to those that provided food and
drinks.
Likewise when the Pink Tractor run passed through the village
the PCC provided snacks and drinks for those who attended. A
collection was made for the Breast Cancer appeal. Thanks
again to all who helped with this event and to those who
attended supporting this annual charity appeal.
The annual bike, ride and walk organised by the Norfolk
Churches Trust takes place on Saturday 8 th Septermber. A fun
day out for all stopping off at as many churches and chapels as
you can. If you are interested in taking part and helping to raise
money for Thorpe Abbotts church please contact Linda Halifax
01379 668705 for further details.
