THE MARDLER GARDENER AKA PANSY’S POTTERINGS
"What wondrous life is this I lead!
Ripe apples drop about my head,
The luscious clusters of the vine
Upon my mouth do crush their wine,
The nectarine and curious peach
Into my hands themselves do reach,
Stumbling on melons, as I pass,
Ensnared with flowers, I fall on grass."
Andrew Marvell
Cyclamen hederifolium is coming into flower and leaf after its
summer dormancy, and you can plant it now under trees or in
borders for a late summer and autumn carpet.
Take root cuttings of mint.
Give lavender plants a light trim all over as soon as the flowers
are past. Use shears and take off just an inch or so of this
year’s growth, to stimulate bushing out from below.
Some simple seed saving, let a few of your lettuce and other
salad leaf plants that are past their best go to seed, collect
them up and use to produce leaves in abundance next year.
Winter radishes are very different from summer types, hotter in
flavour and perfect for cooking.
The end of this month is the perfect time to start planting garlic
bulbs for cropping next year.
Start planting onion sets now.
