Fire rages, homes at risk
Redcliffs couple world-beaters
In Brief
• By Sarla Donovan
REDCLIFFS COUPLE Ian
Huntsman and Wendy Riach
have won the worlds’s longest
canoe race, beating 20 other
competitors in the Yukon 1000.
Starting at Whitehorse, Canada,
on July 22 it took them six
days, 14hr and 55min to paddle
1600km (1000 miles) along the
Yukon River, finishing at Dalton
Highway Bridge in Alaska.
It’s the second time they’ve
taken out the race, finding victory
in 2014 when they clocked
up the second fastest-ever time
in the history of the race.
Ian is a 51-year-old engineer
who works for Hamilton Jet.
He learned to kayak at age 11
and is a member of the Down
River Kayak Club.
Wendy is 52 and a policewoman.
The pair sent texts to Ian’s
father Alan Huntsman after
the win, saying they were “very
tired” but in good condition.
They said the race was tough
this year with lower river levels,
strong winds and at one point
smoke from forest fires severely
affected visibility for several
hours.
Competitors paddle for 18
hours a day, resting between
11pm and 5am.
CHAMPIONS: Wendy Riach
and Ian Huntsman paddled
1600km down the Yukon River to
win the longest canoe race in the
world.
They carry all their food and
equipment with them in the
canoe, setting up camp beside
the river.
Alan said due to time differences
he would stay up late
to check with race organisers
that the pair had got through
the night without any attention
from bears.
“I’m excited, very proud and
very tired,” he told the Bay
Harbour News on Monday.
The pair are due to arrive back
in Christchurch on Friday.
VEHICLE DOWN BANK
Several occupants of a vehicle
which plunged 30m down a bank
about 1am on Sunday morning
were lucky to escape with just
bumps and bruises, Governors
Bay Volunteer Fire Brigade chief
fire officer Andrew Norris said.
The vehicle went off the road
on a sharp bend at Windy Point
between Rapaki and Governors
Bay, careered through bushes
and stopped upright without
overturning. The occupants were
checked by ambulance officers at
the scene.
