THE RED-SAIL JUNK

Great retro rides in Asia are not
confined to land-based ones.
When in Hong Kong, you must
experience riding a junk boat,
the last vessel of its kind in
Hong Kong waters. Also called
sampan, the boat is practically
a relic, and it’s quite a sight
seeing the flashy red sails
against the modern skyline.
You can’t just stand near the
water and hail one, that’s for
sure. There aren’t many of
these traditional boats in
operation; only two or three
vessels still traverse these
waters. Sailing offers are limited
so you will have to plan your
ride in advance.
One of the boats, the Duk
Ling, was originally used by
fishermen and has become a
familiar presence during some
of Hong Kong’s iconic festivals.
Do you know of that time when
the giant rubber ducky sailed
into Victoria Harbour? Well, the
Duk Ling was part of that
historic moment. Special
sailings are also held during
holidays and special events
such as National Day and
Chinese New Year.
