At most, Harbin is a destination where strong winter winds blow; a town where ski slopes and snow slides sit alongside heated eateries that offer solace through warm cups of cocoa. Summertime visitors, however, see a decidedly different side to the city. Without the snow blanketing the city all year round, Harbin’s true nature reveals itself – a fusion of Chinese and Russian elements weaved into the lives of its people. This combination of cultures dates as far back as the 19th century when the locale was just a small outpost for a continent-spanning railway. But how did the fascinating melange happen, an ice-cold meld of Tsarist architecture and Chinese culture? OUTSIDE INFLUENCES Harbin started as a small village outpost that is more akin to a no man’s land than the impressive city it now is. This chilly town only thrived during the 19th century when an agreement between the Chinese and Tsarist Russian governments saw waves of immigrants settle in the new base for the China Eastern Railway. Construction crews, railway employees, engineers, army officials, and their families all took the long, arduous journey down to Harbin from various parts of Russia, bringing with them the first-wave of their influences. As Russia went through a seemingly endless series of trials through to the 1920s – the Russo- Japanese War, World War I, the Russian Revolution, and the Russian Civil War – waves of the country’s people fled. They were the defeated: White Russian refugees who had nowhere else to turn, quickly establishing Harbin as the largest Russian Enclave outside of the Soviet Union. At its peak, hundreds of thousands of Russians were estimated to have lived in Harbin, a far cry from the very few who still populate the city today. And with its people came all the comforts of home. Churches and synagogues were quickly constructed in classic Kievan style, entrepreneurial émigrés established homestyle bakeries and restaurants, and those longing for Russia could drown their sorrows at the city’s many night-time escapes.
