WIGRAM’S PETER Smith 

remembers the day of October 

15, 1953, well. It was the day he 

witnessed the country’s deadliest 

domestic air force crash at the 

age of 14. 

Living in Prebbleton and 

with an uncle in the Royal 

New Zealand Air Force, Mr 

Smith said seeing aircraft 

overhead was a common thing at 

the time. 

While out on his bicycle with 

a friend, an odd engine noise 

alerted him that something was 

amiss that day. When he looked 

up Mr Smith said he saw one of 

the Devons go down. 

Mr Smith said the boys 

grabbed their bikes and in spite 

of no smoke to follow they “rode 

like mad down a shingle road” 

towards the crash site, coming to 

within 150m of the wreckage. 

Mr Smith said ambulance officers 

already on scene told the 

two boys to stay back. 

“I didn’t see a body, which I’m 

very glad of as that would have 

haunted me,” Mr Smith said.

The first XI football team and the 

basketball side have won some fairly 

significant silverware in recent weeks. The 

footballers hold the Connetics Shield, and basketballers, the 

Dowson Cup. The trophies are the codes’ equivalents to the 

Ranfurly Shield. 

Cashmere High supporters might easily have said the basketball 

team was a shoe-in to take the Dowson Cup. Anyway, 

great to see the Cashmere Highs of the Canterbury sports scene 

getting their hands on the silverware. 

And a trip down memory lane on the front page today for 

Peter Smith. Peter was 14, when he witnessed New Zealand’s 

worst domestic air force crash over Wigram.

Cashmere Stream up for award 

THE CASHMERE Stream has 

been named as a finalist in the 

river story award section of the 

Cawthron Foundation 2018 

New Zealand River Awards. 

The Cashmere Stream 

Care Group is celebrating the 

nomination, The award is given 

to an individual or community 

with the most 

interesting and 

compelling story 

about working 

to improve 

the health of a 

river, or rivers 

generally. 

The Cawthron Ken Rouse 

Foundation has 

identified eight stories where 

individuals, groups, businesses 

and communities are working 

together to make a positive 

difference to the health of rivers 

and streams. 

The stream is an urban 

waterway in south-west 

Christchurch. It has good 

ecological health and supports a 

diverse range of fish species. 

It also has high amenity value 

for the local community. The 

stream rises from springs west 

of Sutherlands Rd, Halswell. 

It is 4.9km long but connects 

to almost 50km of drains and 

tributaries. The stream has 

suffered degradation from 

a century of agricultural 

activity, as well as severe rain, 

earthquakes and fire. 

The Cashmere Stream Care 

Group was established as part 

of Environment Canterbury’s 

living streams programme in 

2006 and has worked hard to 

improve the health and amenity 

value of the stream. 

Recent set-backs, including 

the Port Hills fire and the 

earthquakes, have not 

intimidated the group in their 

efforts to clean up the stream. 

Said the group’s chairman Ken 

Rouse: “The Cashmere Stream 

Care Group has worked hard 

on a programme of activities to 

address issues of degradation in 

the Cashmere Stream. 

“We are all delighted that our 

hard work has been recognised 

in this way and we also 

acknowledge the support of our 

partners including Environment 

Canterbury, Christchurch City

the most improved river.

to the forefront of Mr Smith’s

“It brings back a lot of memories. 

It’s never stopped flashing 

through my mind. I’ll always 

remember the crash. 

“At the time, I wasn’t sure how 

I felt . . . but as the years have 

passed I often think of those 

brave young pilots who lost their 

lives while on duty for their 

country and how it must have 

affected their friends and family, 

then and now.”

afternoon of October 15, to 

coincide with the date and time

The Wigram crash remains 

New Zealand’s worst 

domestic air force crash 

with seven men killed. The 

two RNZAF de Havilland 

Devon aircraft were part of a 

flyover of Christchurch Airport 

marking the 1953 London 

to Christchurch Air Race 

prize-giving ceremony. While 

the two Devons awaited 

clearance to land at Wigram 

Airfield, one clipped the wing 

of the other. Both lost control 

and crashed into paddocks 

killing all crew members. 

They were:

BEFORE THE 1953 London 

to Christchuch Air Race, 

commercial air travel to New 

Zealand from Europe wasn’t 

frequent. 

Organised by the Canterbury 

International Air Race Council, 

the 1953 event would be the 

longest of its kind, tasking 

flight crews with the 19,756km 

distance in two categories; speed 

or transport handicap. It would 

both put the country on the map 

and showcase the future of international 

commercial travel. 

Crews from the United Kingdom, 

Holland, Australia and a 

single RNZAF crew left London 

on October 8. 

In just under 24 hours, the 

crew of a Royal Australian 

Air Force Canberra bomber 

touched down to cheering

crowds in Christchurch to win

Airlines DC-6A Liftmaster carrying 

50 Dutch immigrants won

New Zealand’s only entry had 

to pull out after encountering 

issues over Sri Lanka, the crew 

only saved by the actions of 

squadron leader Larry Siegert. 

In celebration of the race, a 27 

plane flyover of the prize-giving 

was organised by the RNZAF 

for October 15. 

Two of those, NZ1810 and 

NZ1811, would encounter 

tragedy on their return to base.

New arena on cards

that Sumner has a riding 

school tucked away at the 

bottom of Evans Pass. 

And few would have 

heard that it is home to a 

real-life ‘Wonky Donkey’, 

aka Tilly. 

Sumner Valley Riding 

School owner Lisa 

Hadfield has leased 2.4ha 

of the city-council-owned 

Sumnervale Reserve for 

the past 35 years, providing 

community-based services 

for children, teenagers and 

adults. 

She takes pre-schoolers 

for walks on Tilly, hosts 

children’s parties, and 

trains young riders to 

compete in events like the 

Springston Trophy. 

She’s now teaching her 

fourth generation of riders. 

But to continue safely 

providing services all year 

round, Ms Hadfield needs 

an all-weather dressage 

arena. 

The arena would provide 

a surface that protects the 

horses and ponies and 

their riders. 

“Instead of riding on 

a muddy or too hard 

paddock, you are on a 

surface that will protect 

the horses’ legs. In the 

summer, the ground gets 

very hard like concrete 

and that jars their legs and 

causes tendon problems, 

and in the winter, the 

ground is so heavy that you 

mess it up – it’s slippery 

and dangerous and you 

can do tendon damage as 

well,” Ms Hadfield said.

$20,000,’’ Ms Hadfield said. 

While it is still in the 

early stages, Ms Dyson 

said she has “a few leads 

to chase up” but hoped to 

be able to help turn the 

project into a reality.

From Addington barracks to Lions leader 

After more than 50 years 

serving on and off in the 

New Zealand Army, 

Addington’s Alastair 

Rankin has taken charge 

at the Lions Club of 

New Brighton. Georgia 

O’Connor-Harding reports 

ALASTAIR RANKIN isn’t 

afraid of a lot. From deactivating 

land mines in Cambodia to 

helping monitor borders in the 

Middle East, not much fazes the 

semi-retired army captain and 

Lions president. 

Mr Rankin, 68, was elected 

to the role last month. He was 

a part of the 2/4 Battalion until 

February. 

So taking on a leadership role 

is nothing new for Mr Rankin, 

who has also been president of 

other Lions clubs. It will be his 

second time at the head of the 

New Brighton Lions, of which 

he was president in the late 

1990s. 

He has had a long association 

with New Brighton, first joining 

the Lions club in 1984 before 

relocating to Wellington in 2000. 

He rejoined the New Brighton 

Lions about four years ago. 

While living in Wellington, he 

became Lions Club of Newlands 

president, before he moved to the 

Lions Club of Whitby in Porirua. 

He said it was not long before 

he was elected president in 

Whitby. 

He has also been zone 

chairman for a range of Lions 

clubs, including Christchurch 

Seaview, Ferrymead, Lyttelton 

and Pegasus. 

His goal for the New Brighton 

club is to raise membership. 

“There is no criteria . . . all 

you have got to do is want to 

do something useful for your 

community,” he said. 

During his time in the army, 

Mr Rankin worked for a year 

at the Cambodian Mine Action 

Center in 2004, training and retraining 

de-miners. He was also 

heavily involved in operations in 

the minefields. 

Land mines are a big problem 

in Cambodia and are a legacy 

of three decades of warfare, 

starting with the Cambodian 

Civil War in the late 1960s. 

The remaining land mines are 

discovered using a metal detector 

and burned. Mr Rankin said 

while he trusted the de-miners 

to have cleared the area, when he 

first began working in the job, 

there was “a bit of trepidation”. 

He said hundreds of land 

mines were uncovered every day. 

“I was standing a few feet away 

from a guy who stood on one 

and it blew his foot off,” he said. 

But he said driving in 

Cambodia was more dangerous 

than working on the minefields. 

Many of the main roads had 

only just been tarsealed when 

he was in the county and there 

wasn’t a lot in the way of road 

rules, he said. 

“We never drove at night out 

in the country side. It just wasn’t 

worth it, cows would just walk 

out onto the road,” he said. 

Mr Rankin spent about five of 

his military years overseas. 

He was posted to Singapore 

from 1976-1978, working in the 

communications centre for New 

Zealand Force South East Asia. 

“I liked south Asia. The two 

countries are very different. 

Singapore was very quick to go 

ahead and Cambodia was only 

just going ahead and that was 

because of the war,” he said. 

He worked with the New 

Zealand training advisory team 

for the Multinational Force 

and Observers in the Middle 

East, which was monitoring the 

border between Israel and Egypt 

in Sinai. 

His job was to help train 

the United States, Fijian and 

Colombian troops on the border.

“The other nations have 

different ways of thinking and 

different ways of doing things. 

Doesn’t mean it is wrong. It is 

just different and you can learn 

from it,” he said. 

Mr Rankin said he learnt the 

most from working with the 

101st Air Assault Division, a 

division of the US Army trained 

for air assault operations. 

“They were brilliant . . . they 

were particularly good at aircraft

recognition. When you are on 

the border and the jet flies over 

you, it flies over very quickly 

and you have only got a split 

second to say what kind it is,” he 

said. 

He comes from a military 

family and joined the army when 

he was 16- years- old, seeking 

adventure, “excitement” and to 

get away from Blenheim where 

he grew up. Mr Rankin said 

joining the army “wasn’t a shock 

to the system” as compulsory 

military training was practised 

for males up until 1972. 

He retired three times – the 

first was after 21 years of service 

and he wanted to provide 

“stability” for his children. 

Now that he has semi-retired, 

he is involved in part-time 

project work writing reports on 

issues in the army such as driver 

fatigue. 

Having spent time overseas, 

Mr Rankin said he now has 

a “fairly relaxed attitude” to 

life. “It is a lovely place in New 

Zealand . . . it is lovely to be able 

to go into the bush, sit down 

and know there are no snakes or 

scorpions,” he said.

HILLMORTON HIGH’S middle 

school students got a new-found 

appreciation for reading from All 

Black loose-forward Ardie Savea, 

on Thursday. 

The year 7 to 10 pupils held 

an assembly where Savea and 

two Crusader All Blacks Jack 

Goodhue and Scott Barrett had a 

question and answer session. 

Principal Ann Brokenshire 

said it was the answer to the final 

question which had the biggest 

impact. 

“The last question was ‘do you 

read books?’,” she said. 

“Ardie answered and said when 

he was their age he couldn’t read, 

but since he has learnt he has 

loved it. 

“I think that caught a few of 

our students off guard.” 

The All Blacks trio were joined 

by Wigram MP, Dr Megan 

Woods. 

The All Blacks played a 

game of three halves against 

Canterbury and Otago selections 

in Christchurch on Friday night 

in the lead-up to the Rugby 

Championship. 

After performances of the 

school song and a kapa haka 

performance, the rugby players 

ran a skills session on the school’s 

tennis courts. 

“It was an amazing experience,” 

she said. 

“I think a number of the senior 

students saw what was going on 

and snuck in amongst it as they 

were feeling rather jealous that 

the middle school got this experience,” 

Mrs Brokenshire said.

CASHMERE HIGH School’s 

trophy cabinet is starting to 

look rather full with both the 

boys first XI football team and 

premier basketball team getting 

their hands on the Connetics 

Shield and Dowson Cup 

respectively. 

Both trophies are played for 

like rugby’s Ranfurly Shield 

with the boys football winning 

the shield for the first time 

since 2016, last week thanks to 

a 2-1 win over St Thomas’ of 

Canterbury. 

The boys basketball team have 

had a firm grip on the Dowson 

Cup, since it was introduced into 

the regular season. 

Cashmere High School beat 

Burnside High School for it in 

May last year and have held it 

since. 

Cashmere currently sits on 

top of the division one table 

while the football team are 

firmly entrenched in the top 

four. 

Previously the Dowson Cup, 

named after the family shoe 

company, was a preseason 

accolade. 

Both teams will be looking to 

hold off the challengers for the 

remainder of the season and 

secure the respective trophies for 

the summer. 

The goal for both teams will 

then be to reach the final in 

their local competition before 

their focus shifts towards 

tournament week in September 

and October. 

The national boys football will 

be played in Christchurch while 

the boys basketball team are 

travelling to the South 

Island Championships in 

Invercargill. 

Football coach Craig Squire 

said his team’s effort and desire 

on defence had been a positive 

so far this year. 

“While Cashmere teams in 

the past have always been team 

which could score goals, often 

our defence was quite leaky,” he 

said. 

Squire said the aim of his 

team was to win the competition 

and he believed after that result, 

the team would gain plenty of 

confidence. 

The basketball team is 

undefeated through nine games 

and look set to have a good 

chance to win back-to-back 

titles. 

They defeated St Bede’s 

College 121-65 in their last 

round-robin game.

Prisoners grow 

veges for Aviva 

FOR MORE than six 

years, inmates from a 

Christchurch Men’s Prison 

unit have been providing 

weekly deliveries of fresh 

vegetables to Aviva, a local 

family and sexual violence 

support service. 

The prison’s vegetable 

garden was started in 2012. 

And since early 2013, 625 

70-litre crates of produce 

have been delivered to 

Aviva – 63 of them since 

January this year. Aviva is 

based at Eastgate Shopping 

Centre. 

“Prison vegetable 

gardens are an important 

training and therapeutic 

activity for prisoners and 

the skills they learn are 

beneficial for both the 

individual gardener and 

the community,” says 

corrections officer Gerard 

Grout. 

Aviva marketing and 

communications manager 

Julie McCloy said the 

vegetables are a weekly 

highlight for many 

families. 

“We see a lot of people 

who struggle to afford 

fresh veges – and some 

who struggle to afford food 

in general. The vegetables 

from the prison are an 

absolutely vital component 

in making many families’ 

nutrition and budget much 

healthier.” 

“Even in winter, there 

are usually enough 

vegetables to make the 

run worthwhile,” said Mr 

Grout. ”This week the unit 

dispatched four crates 

of potatoes, silverbeet, 

cabbage, cauliflower 

etc. During the warmer 

seasons, up to six or seven 

crates can be delivered.” 

About 70 per cent 

of the prisoners in the 

20-bed unit have prison 

jobs, including in the 

distribution warehouse or 

collecting rubbish across 

the prison. 

Mr Grout said these men 

often spend their weekends 

working in the gardens. 

Vegetables grown at 

the unit include beans, 

beetroot, leek, cabbage, 

onion, rhubarb, spring 

onion, potato, sweetcorn, 

radish, cauliflower, brussels 

sprouts, tomatoes, 

cucumber, pumpkin, broccoli, 

carrot, celery, parsnip, 

lettuce, garlic, turnip, 

silverbeet, spinach, and 

peas. Other seasonal products 

include strawberries, 

lemons and raspberries. 

The produce is harvested, 

cleaned and packed in the 

70-litre plastic bins for 

delivery. 

The garden also propagates 

and grows seedlings 

for other vegetable gardens 

at the prison and for the 

prison grounds. 

“Our garden workers are 

very proud of their garden, 

the produce they grow, and 

that their labours make a 

difference for families in 

need through Aviva.”
