TEAMWORK: St Thomas of Canterbury College’s rowing squad bagging chicken
manure as a fundraiser for Christchurch South Rotary.
College rowers get involved
with Rotary fundraiser
THE ROWING squad
from St Thomas of
Canterbury College joined
forces with the Rotary Club
of Christchurch South to
assist with the Rotary Club’s
annual fundraiser, the
bagging and sale of chicken
manure, descriptively
known as “hensh.”
More than 30 young
rowers and parents assisted
Rotarians to deal with
50-tonnes of product, bagging
and tying in 10kg bags.
The Rotary Club has relied
on this mainstay annual
event to fund its community
work with many regular
customers placing continuing
orders over the more
than 30 years it has been in
operation.
Sales points will be dotted
around the city and as
far afield as Rolleston on
Saturday.
St Thomas’ rowing
squad will compete in the
Maadi Cup regatta, next
March at Lake Karapiro,
near Hamilton, as well as
several other regattas at
Lake Ruataniwha in the
Mackenzie District and
with a likely squad of nearly
40 young rowers heading
to the week-long Maadi
event, early application to
fundraising is essential.
Said South Christchurch
Rotarian Athol McCully:
“With some active
Rotarians in their 80s
and 90s the support of St
Thomas’ has been much
appreciated, it is a great
example of cooperative
effort that benefits not only
the participants but also the
wider community.”
