Postcards From
New York
Start spreading the news; the Veterans Warhawk
Squadron marching band wants you to be a part of
New York, New York.
Veterans High School Band Director, Jeremy Fermin
said this year’s show is called, “Postcards from New
York.”
“Recently the band took a trip to New York and while
there, I got to thinking about the city and how such
great music was created there,” Fermin said. “So we
decided to do a show based on New York. We will be
performing Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York,” “God
Bless the USA,” by Lee Greenwood, and Alicia Key’s,
“Empire State of Mind.””
Last year the Warhawk Squadron didn’t use props for
their show, but this year they plan to do so.
“We will have five 8x8 post cards on the field,” Fermin
said. “On the front will be a stamp and after each song
is performed they will be turned around one at a time.
By the end of it will be the skyline of New York, which
should be visually very neat.”
This is Fermin’s third year as the band director for
Veterans High School. He said the band has grown
about 20 members, making it one of their biggest
freshmen classes.
“I am really excited to have such a big group of
freshmen,” Fermin said. “They are already talented
so I can’t wait to see them grow over these next four
years. But the band as a whole has worked the hardest
they’ve ever had and are doing really well. We are the
only school in the county that’s never won a grand
championship. Last year we did very well and came
close to winning that championship. The students are
hungry and are ready to aim high.”
“We have had music majors from University of Georgia,
Georgia Southern University, and Auburn University
working with us during our camp this year,” he went
on to say. “We also have a new colorguard instructor
this year, Hannah Banbury. She is a Perry High School
alumnus and I actually was her teacher when I was
the assistant band director there. I look forward to a
successful year.”
The Warhawk Squadron will also be heading a big
fundraiser drive for new uniforms. Fermin said the
life of a marching band uniform is between eight and
10 years, which is where their current uniforms are.
Fundraisers will be announced throughout the year,
but if anyone is interested in donating to the drive,
Fermin asks to visit their website www.veteransband.
org and to contact the band boosters.
