James McGrath, assistant minister to the prime minister, insisted his resignation was accepted on Wednesday. On Tuesday Mr Turnbull won a party leadership vote. Ten ministers then offered to resign, including challenger Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton. Mr Turnbull is under pressure over poor polling and a divisive energy policy. He initially accepted Mr Dutton's resignation and that of International Development Minister Concetta Fierravanti-Wells but rejected the other eight, including Mr McGrath's. Mr Turnbull's centre-right coalition will face a general election by May next year, after recently losing a key by-election in Queensland. Cohen pleaded guilty on Tuesday to violating finance laws during the 2016 presidential election by handling hush money for Mr Trump's alleged lovers. His plea bargain does not oblige him to testify over the Russia allegations. But Cohen's personal lawyer said his client was ready to "tell everything about Donald Trump that he knows". According to the lawyer, Lanny Davis, Cohen has knowledge of whether Donald Trump knew in advance about the computer hacking which undermined his opponent, Hillary Clinton. Cohen also has knowledge, Mr Davis said, of a meeting at Trump Tower in New York in June 2016 between Trump campaign aides and a Russian delegation which was promising political "dirt". The lawyer also asked why the US president, who was not named in Cohen's plea of guilt, should not be prosecuted for the crimes Cohen had confessed to committing on his behalf. At a rally on Tuesday, Mr Trump attacked the suggestion that his campaign had colluded with Russia, telling his audience in West Virginia: "Where is the collusion? They are still looking for collusion, where is the collusion? Find some collusion. We want to find the collusion." BBC •From left- Michael Cohen, Donald Trump, Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal Uganda's Bobi Wine hires international lawyer UGANDAN INDE- PENDENT MP and musician Bobi Wine, who has been detained on charges of the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, has hired a US law firm, lawyer Robert Amsterdam says a statement. Mr Amsterdam described his client's arrest as a "politically motivated act of repression" and alleges that he has been tortured in custody. The army, which is holding Wine, denies that he has been tortured and President Yoweri Museveni has dismissed the claims as "fake news". Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, won a by-election last year. He has been held since last week, along with four fellow MPs and dozens of others. They were campaigning in a bitterly contested by-election in Arua in the north of the country. Wine is due to appear in court on Thursday. Mr Amsterdam is recommending that the US should "hit [government] officials in their wallets with a Magnitsky-style sanctions schedule as they need to understand the consequences of this attack on human rights”. The US Magnitsky Act allows Congress to impose sanctions on human rights abusers anywhere in the world. BBC • President Peter Mutharika has warned that he has heard enough from his critics Malawi president critic arrested •Bobi Wine was a popular musician before becoming a member of parliament MALAWIAN OPPOSITION activist Manice Dawood is due to appear in court after being detained at the airport in the capital, Lilongwe, on Tuesday, journalist Peter Jegwa Kumwenda reports. She was on her way to the US where she is based. Ms Dawood is a member of the new opposition United Transformation Movement (UTM) which was recently launched by Vice-President Saulos Chilima after he left the governing party. President Peter Mutharika has warned that he had heard enough from his critics and promised he would act. Ms Dawood appears to have fallen victim to this, our correspondent say, but the charges against her have not been confirmed.. President Mutharika is due to run for re-election next year. BBC
WWW.DAILYHERITAGE.COM.GH DAILY HERITAGE THURSDAY, AUGUST 23, 2018 05 Editorial Govts are elected to create employment and not job losses IT IS becoming increasingly clear that some policies of the government are geared towards creating unemployment for hundreds of Ghanaians, instead of creating employment opportunities for our people. In the name of reforms, some appointees of the government are implementing policies that are rendering many jobless. One of such policies is the socalled banking sector reforms which have rendered and will soon render hundreds and thousands jobless. Another policy that, if implemented, would surely render hundreds jobless is the proposed retrenchment of about 90% of the staff of Ghana Post Company Limited. Information available to the DAILY HERITAGE indicates that staff of the Ghana Post Company Limited nationwide would soon be given the matching orders because they lack knowledge in Information and Communications Technology (ICT). The move, according to our sources, is to enhance operations and ensure smooth running of the company. The decision became necessary after management of the state company, through internal research, discovered that majority of the staff lacked ICT knowledge of the new system being installed by the government as part of rebranding exercise of the company currently underway. Sources told the paper that the research report submitted to the office of the Vice President revealed that the average staff age of the Ghana Post Company Limited was 55 years, with very few willing to learn ICT when given the opportunity. After a crunch meeting on the effective running of the digital addressing system among other ICT elements being synchronised into the operations of Ghana Post, management of the company decided to retrench at least 90% of the staff instead of spending huge sums of money to train them in ICT when they would retire in the next five years. We appreciate the efforts by the management of Ghana Post Company Limited to reform the company, but don’t think that the solution to lack of knowledge in ICT is dismissal. Five years to retirement is a long time worth investing. Retrenchment will only render them jobless after many years of dedicated service, which is not fair. The workers, some of whom have worked with the company for many years, should therefore be trained on the job to be abreast of the current trend. NDC race: Mahama to declare intention today BY STEPHEN ODOI LARBI • Former President John Dramani Mahama JOHN DRAMANI Mahama, will on Thursday, August 23, 2018, present his letter to the general secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to officially declare his intention to contest the vacant flagbearer position of the party. His letter of intent, according to sources, is expected to be presented to the party by his campaign team. The former Ghanaian leader whom many had expected to declare his intention will then proceed to one of the regions where he is expected to seek the blessings of chiefs and begin his campaign. His entry into the NDC flagbearer race will bring to an end all the speculations surrounding his return to the lead the party a third time. Mr Mahama has already tested the waters with the party’s unity walk that was spearheaded by Kojo Bonsu, a former Mayor of Kumasi, and grounds appear to be fertile for his coming back. He will join the likes of the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, former Chief Executive Officer of National Identification Authority, Sylvester Mensah, the poor boy from Binduri, Stephen Atubiga, Prof. Joshua Alabi, Dr Ekow Spio-Garbrah, Hon. Kweku Ricketts-Hagan and Elikplim Agbemava to contest the vacant flagbearer position of the party. The NDC goes to the polls on December 7, 2018 to elect a flagbearer.
