50 A F F O R D A B L E A D V E R T I S I N G F O R A L L POEM CORNER AUTUMN COUNTRYSIDE Poem donated by David Garrett Say farewell to summer’s flowers as their life’s course has run Farewell to all the swallows gone to Africa, looking for the sun Farewell to balmy evenings and the leaves from off the trees But as autumn spreads her damping mantle she will with her sunshine tease White mists roll over meadows with a ghostly chill Spider webs like strings of pearls the hedgerow seems to fill But in the distance hear the barking of the geese that now return To over-winter in our England as their Artic lands they spurn So as a season fades and dies like the outgoing tide Bringing more of nature’s miracles to us, in our autumn countryside Orange horizons over a western hill glows like a fire in the sky A frosty shroud surrounds the moon silhouettes the wild geese flying by So another autumn evening starts tranquil, quiet and still While the countryside drifts off to sleep until the early morning chill.
