The Church Brasses
SEPTEMBER 2018
The “B” and “F” words were not allowed in the Bassham household, as I grew up, if
I ever said I was bored or fed up my mum would have the horse brasses, of which
there were many, off the wall and I would be given the brasso and polishing cloths!
I was very happy when they were sold.
Altar Candle Sticks given to the glory of God and in memory of David Melville
Vicar of St Thomas’ 1892 to 1913
So the pendulum has swung back and I now find myself doing the church brasses
and finding a time of quiet reflection and satisfaction in making them gleam. I think
of all those whose memory they were given and the folk who have loving cleaned
them over the past centenary and realise it’s my time to do my bit in their memory.
Plates
It doesn’t take long about an hour
and can be done at anytime there
isn’t a service on. They need one
good clean a month and buffing up a
couple of times. We have spaces on
the Brass Cleaning Rota and if
anyone would like to help please see
me.
