A VERY WARM
WELCOME
Dear Parents and Carers,
Following another exciting year at King’s Leadership Academy, I am pleased to report that student outcomes have
improved even further under the expert guidance of their teachers.
This year 89% of students passed their English and Mathematics at grade 4 or above, making King’s the second
highest performing Free School nationally in that category.
65.3% of students achieved strong passes in English and Mathematics at grade 5 or above.
85% of students passed 5 GCSEs including English and Mathematics and 21% achieved grade 7s (As) or higher in
5 or more subjects including English and Mathematics.
60% of students passed the English Baccalaureate with grade 4 ( C) or higher. Progress in the English
Baccalaureate was also very strong, with students placing in the top percentile nationally.
A number of students achieved 5 or more grade 9s, which is the top grade available. With one student achieving
grade 9s across all subjects, placing them in the top 0.003% of the population. At King’s we are very proud of all
of our students and realise that none of this would have been possible without your ongoing belief in us.
On behalf of all the staff at King’s, thank you for choosing us to educate your child, we’re extremely grateful for
your support and look forward to another fantastic year together.
Yours sincerely
On 29th August 2018, we had the
pleasure of watching our Year 11
class of 2018 receive their GCSE
results. There were tears of joy as
pupils saw their hard work and
endeavour over their time at King’s
pay off with a fantastic set of GCSE
results.
Over the Summer, Year 7 pupils were set the challenge of completing a Character Record to demonstrate ways
in which they have shown the ASPIRE values in their everyday lives.
This was an optional project, but the endeavour shown by so many of our pupils has been absolutely amazing!
Pupils have shown the ASPIRE values in a variety of different ways, including visiting care homes, writing
book reports, and taking on new challenges such as canoeing.
What an excellent start for our new Year 7 cohort, living the ASPIRE values before even starting at King’s!
06
And here is the news the Stats group was looking for... 100% C-A*!
All the hard work that this aspirational group of current Y11 pupils (pictured above) put on completing excellent
coursework and revising for the written Statistics GCSE exam has finally paid off! 100% of pupils achieved grades
A*-C, with 63% of pupils achieving a grade A!
Congratulations to all students that exceeded Mr Robinson and Miss Gallego's expectations by endeavouring and
trying so hard at the end of the year.
You all deserve all the success possible! We cannot wait to see your Maths results in a few months time...
“Congratulations to all students”

On Monday 10th September, Year 7 students pledged to
always follow and abide by the ASPIRE code throughout
their journey at King’s. The tie ceremony, a rite of
passage for Year 7, sees students formally accept their
school ties as a symbol of their transition from Primary
School to High School. The auditorium was full with
parents, family and staff witnessing this important and
symbolic event.
Proceedings began with students being introduced into the
hall and officially welcomed to the Academy by
Mr Ierston, the Principal. Students and guests were invited
to enjoy a special musical performance by the choir in the
atrium. There were exceptional speeches from four key
speakers demonstrating how their public speaking skills
had improved within the two days at the King’s Induction.
To signify their commitment to the Academy’s values
students signed a formal declaration, as part of their
induction, to always follow the ASPIRE code. After
shaking hands with the Principal they then proceeded to
receive their tie before being announced as Young
Leaders for the first time at King’s.
Head of Achievement Miss Purchon, Year Leader Miss
Goode and all the staff at King’s are looking forward to a
fantastic year ahead with Year 7.

Year 7 pupils visit the University of Oxford
During project week 70 lucky year
7 students had the opportunity to
experience university life through
our annual trip to Oxford
University. With a two day
jam-packed itinerary, we started
our time at Warwick Castle and a
fun afternoon of bowling, followed
by a meal at Pizza Express.
After a well deserved sleep and a
huge breakfast, we travelled to
Oxford. The trip was a huge
success with pupils spending time
learning about history at Warwick
Castle and later travelling to
Oxford University for a Spanish
workshop with University lecturers.
Students participated in a Spanish
music workshop where they wrote
their own Spanish summer hits and
also completed a language poetry
session analysing the visual effects
of language. All pupils worked
really hard and participated lots
during the sessions producing some
excellent work. The trip enabled
them to experience real lecture and
seminar rooms and explore the
colleges of Oxford University. A
huge well done to all the students
involved for their endeavour and
professionalism. We even had
comments from the public on how
smart and professional we were.
Some people even took photos of
us in the street they were so
impressed! An amazing trip had by
all, we can't wait to do it again next
year!
“A huge well done to
involved for their
endeavour and
professionalism”

Year 10 had an action packed project week with only one day actually spent at King’s! Over the course of
the week students completed their practice Duke of Edinburgh expedition, which saw them spend two days
developing their leadership and character skills with other students from their year group. Students now get
to complete their actual silver expedition leading to a qualification which will stand them in good stead for
the future.
Students also visited LJMU where they had a tour of the campus, participated in some taster sessions with
University lecturers and gained first-hand university life experience from current students. Many students
returned and said that what they had seen had impacted on their future flight-paths, whether it be a potential
change in future career path or simply giving them to extra motivation needed to undertake the final year of
their GCSE course with the end goal firmly in mind.
Year 10 students also worked with Warrington Youth Club to take part in a morning of sessions helping to
strengthen positive mind-set and resilience. There was even some yoga as part of the mindfulness sessions!

" A CV may get you the interview, but character will get you the
job" - Major Tim Peake
On Monday 10th September, year 11 demonstrated their character by endeavouring and maintaining
professionalism when participating in career workshops and interviews. A wide range of employers
including: Balfour Beatty, Sellafield, Bell Group, O2, Bridgewater, Optimise Me, Cheshire Police, 3AM
Scott Safety, Morrison's Logistics to name but a few. All students were taught how to complete a job
application form and CV, then were asked questions based on their flight path and skills. This opportunity
was a chance for employers to see if students were the right people for the job. Employer feedback stated that,
'students made a good first impression'. We are all so proud of our year 11 students starting with the end in
mind.
14
On the Monday 10 th September 2018, Year 13 students at King’s Leadership Academy, Warrington worked with
expert trainers from the education charity Talk The Talk.
Talk The Talk’s mission is to improve students’ communication skills to enable positive interaction in all life
situations.
Talk The Talk has trained over 20,000 students in the past twelve months in England and Wales and nearly
80,000 since we first started - using a programme developed over the past six years.
Talk About The Future - Leaving school to enter the world of work, further training or education is both an exciting
and daunting time. The prospect of independence is often overwhelming. Talk About The Future supports students
preparing to leave school or college by developing the competencies needed to take this next step with confidence
and a positive mind-set. Students are encouraged to talk about their life experiences and translate these into
a defined set of unique skills.
Talk about their plans for moving on – and how confident they feel about this
Learn about preparing for an interview and appropriate communication during an interview
Prepare a set of open questions and undergo mock interviews both as interviewer and interviewee
Explore the impact and necessity of personal anecdotes within the interview situation
Structure and deliver an interview ready presentation about their experiences and skills.
Highlight and nurture employability skills, interview techniques and key presentation methods
Develop oracy skills that improve connections with potential employers and training providers
Equip students with advanced visual, vocal and verbal communication skills
Boost levels of confidence and self-esteem as students move on from school or college
Provide students with a resource to assist the creation of a CV using appropriate and professional terminology
At the end of this workshop students will be able to keep their workbook which will assist them in creating their
first CV, completing their UCAS application and preparing for upcoming interviews.
There is no doubt that grades open the door to opportunity for our students. But when they walk through that door
– it is a completely different set of skills. We are striving to ensure that all young people are suitably equipped with
the essential tools and skills to communicate confidently in a variety of situations – both within school and in their
lives beyond.

As part of Project Week in July, a number of students throughout the day had the opportunity to hold and learn
about a range of creatures from around the world. The creatures included an amphibian called a Vietnamese blue
tree frog, the desert-dwelling sandfish (a lizard-like creature), a giant millipede, a tarantula, guinea pigs from South
America and a leopard gecko. We learned about adaptations, habitats, environments and many aspects of life about
these amazing and wonderful creatures! Thank you to Animals In Tuition for 7 great sessions delivered to our
students - we had a great day!
Did you know?...
In case you're interested, here's a few facts we learnt from the sessions:
- Fact 1: Snakes have forked tongues to help them work out which direction their food can be found. They lick the
air and when a scent is detected on one fork of the tongue and not the other, the snake knows to turn in that
direction.
- Fact 2: Millipedes do not in fact have 1000 legs. They usually have between 300 and 400 legs and, although
centipedes are hunters and can bite us, millipedes are decomposers and will not bite us when we hold them - in fact
worms get the credit as decomposers but millipedes are major contributors to the decomposition that is vital for our
planet to function.
- Fact 3: spiders have eight legs but lots of them, including tarantulas, have two arms as well! Take a look next time
you have the chance.

This week we spoke to Mrs Logan, Head of Geography at King’s…
Did you have a flight path?
I was always encouraged at school to aim high and
some might say that I took that literally as I had my
heart set on becoming an astronaut. I put great
thought into how I would achieve this goal so
researched everything about NASA and entry
requirements onto the astronaut programme. I soon
found out that I could become a mission specialist as
a geologist. This was a subject I was interested in and
something that was achievable. I went on to study
Geology at both A-Level and then at University. It
was around this time that my sights changed from
looking up at the sky to looking back down here on
Earth and I chose to study a degree in Geology with
Archaeology. My passion grew for archaeology and I
went onto study a MA Practical Archaeology. This
then allowed me the opportunity to travel and work
all over the UK and Europe, excavating much of
Roman and Medieval Europe. I always loved the
training and teaching aspects of the job, which led me
to believe that maybe teaching was what I was meant
to do. So I completed my teacher training in a school
in Birmingham and I have never looked back.
What inspires you?
Listening to the wisdom of Sir David Attenborough,
who inspires me to better myself and the world
around me. As a result of his Blue Planet
documentary, I have cut down the use of plastic in my
home.
Are you involved in any
extra-curricular activities?
As Head of Geography my focus for after school activities
is to provide intervention opportunities and the mentoring
of GCSE Geography students.
What drew you to King’s?
The focus on character and values within the
curriculum was a real drawl for me to come and work
at Kings. It is so important to include these values in
everyday life and equips pupils for life after school,
becoming a citizen in a fast-changing world.
What is your greatest
achievement?
My son Flynn, who is 6 years old.
What is your favourite part of the
King’s day?
Lesson change-over, it is lovely to see such
well-behaved and polite pupils moving around the
school and respecting the environment.
Have you learnt anything new
since starting at King’s?
Yes, I have learnt how to use Google Drive and
Google Classroom. This is new teaching technology
for me and I like everything I have seen so far.
