TRAINS COME TO MAULDIN
The Greater Mauldin
Chamber of Commerce and
the City of Mauldin hosted
the largest push-button
operated, interactive layout
on the East Coast from the
Atlantic Coast S Gaugers.
The Atlantic Coast S Gaugers
is a not-for-profit club that
originated in Richmond, VA
in 1998 and now has eight divisions along the east coast.
The layout featured American Flyer trains from the 1940’s and
1950’s with interactive operating accessories including a saw
mill, log loader, barrel loader, outhouse door, and more. A
Thomas the Tank Engine train from Thomas’ Cab was available

for children to “engineer.” In addition
to the interactive S Gauge exhibit,
there were two other exhibits of N
Gauge and G Gauge trains, as well
as an operating steam engine model
during the first weekend of the show.
The train show also featured the
new Piedmont ‘N Southern Modular
N Scale layout by the Piedmont
‘N Southern Model Railroad Club,
formed in 2009. Guests young and
old were welcomed to come to the
Mauldin Cultural Center to explore a
fantastic, miniature world of trains.

HOME DEPOT VOLUNTEERS CLEAN AND CARE
FOR VETERANS MEMORIAL
In August, a group of volunteers with Home Depot
on Woodruff Road cleaned Mauldin’s Veteran
Memorial, which sits on Butler on the grounds of
the Mauldin Sports Center. Chris Wilson and her
fellow volunteers gave their time as one of many
service projects that the group takes part in to keep
connected with the Upstate community. Wilson
chose the site of the Veterans Memorial as the
focus of this service project because veterans are
“near and dear to [her] heart,” since both Wilson’s
husband Dale and some of her coworkers are veterans themselves. The volunteers placed fresh
pine straw around the memorial and planted flowers to brighten up the area. Wilson, who passes
by the memorial frequently during her daily travels, said the volunteers wanted to draw the attention
of passersby to the memorial to remind people of those who have served in the military.
Those who volunteered in August included
Terry Barrett, Christy Crain, Lynda Hennessy,
Dave Pelenberg, Judy Pinoni, Jordan Pinoni,
Holly Przekop, Chris Wilson, and Dale
Wilson. Home Depot employees complete
many service projects throughout the
community, especially projects that benefit
or commemorate veterans. The group
plans to take part in November’s Veteran’s
Day Ceremony, which will be held Monday,
November 12, 2018, 11 a.m. at the Mauldin
Veterans Memorial.

DEPARTMENT REPORT | RECREATION
Youth Athletics
Mauldin Recreation is offering five different programs for youth this fall: tackle football, flag football,
fall baseball, fall softball, and cheerleading. All of these programs have begun the fall season.
Tackle football began in late with the Mauldin Jamboree at Sunset Park. Athletic Coordinator Willie
Stewart invited teams from Greer, Simpsonville, and Fountain Inn to participate in the jamboree. The
program from Mauldin, which fields nine teams, is the largest in the Golden Strip League.
Fall baseball and softball are a great way for young players to get more experience in an atmosphere
more casual than the spring season leagues. Twelve baseball teams and two softball teams are
competing this fall. Mauldin Recreation was able to put a softball team for six to eight year olds
together; however, no other city in the league was able to produce a team. Mauldin Recreation hopes
to try again next year to offer this program.
Thanks to a high demand from parents and kids, Mauldin Recreation added the new fall flag football
program. Teams for all Golden Strip League cities will participate, with five teams from Mauldin.
The cheer crew is under new leadership with La’Tory Jemison, who has managed all three squads for
this year. The Sugar Plums, Mighty Movers, and Chicks with Kicks can all been seen and heard at all
tackle football games at Springfield Park.

Ray Hopkins Senior Center
The summer months at the Ray Hopkins Senior Center have a different feel than the rest of the year.
Guests are busy visiting family and taking care of grandchildren, so some clubs that meet regularly
take a small break.
Senior Center staff have filled the open schedule spaces with trips and educational seminars.
August trips included watching Mamma Mia! and Always a Bridesmaid at the Flat Rock Playhouse,
as well as kayaking on the French Board River. The educational seminars covered subjects such as
spinal health, muscular degeneration, and new backing technologies.
The Senior Center has also installed a new sound system in the gym. The new system allows guests
to hear in all corners of the gym. Guests will experience the difference during an upcoming fall
production by the Elderberries theater group on September 27th at 11:30 a.m.
Sports Center
The SilverSneakers program has hit the Sports Center in full force with 162 new Sports Center
members due to the program. Twenty-nine classes will be offered in September that adhere to the
Silver Sneakers curriculum.
One of the main goals for Recreation Director Joe Lanahan is to attract new members that will
use the Sports Center between the hours of 5-8pm. “We are looking at ways to get folks at the
end of their work day,” said Lanahan. “The classes and programs we offer are some of the best in
Greenville County.”
Program Coordinator Amanda Duffie will direct efforts to bring in new interest during these hours.
“Amanda has a good feel on how to connect with our customers,” Lanahan said. “She is one of our
most popular fitness instructors and she is excited to learn more about how to make the Sports
Center more relevant on social media and in our local community.” Part of this new approach will be
two billboards advertising the Sports Center, which will be located on Woodruff Road and Laurens
Road this fall.
YOUTH BASKETBALL RESGISTRATION
Registration for Youth Basketball Tryouts will be October 1st - 31st!
Fire Prevention Education/Training
In August, Mauldin Fire personnel trained for a total of 1,457
hours, including training on ground ladders, community
outreach in local businesses performing semi-annual fire plans,
and more. Two personnel attended the SC Fire Academy in
Columbia for leadership training, while three certified Fire
Marshals attended a Plan Review class on commercial fire
sprinkler systems.
Inspections: 86 | Conferences: 112
In mid-August, MFD assisted the police department with the
Girls Youth Academy. Over two days, the campers were taught how to operate a fire extinguisher,
CPR, and various fire safety tips. Campers were also given the chance to practice search and rescue
exercises and operate the fire hoses.
The MFD Training Officer attended a grant-funded class on active shooters by TEEX, while three
other personnel attended another grant-funded active shooter response class conducted at the
Golden Strip Career Center, with members of fire service, law enforcement, and EMS participating.
Two firefighters successfully completed their relief engine driver test, which consisted of hands-on
knowledge of equipment as well as a street and driving test.
