FIREWORKS FINALE MARKS
END OF BEACHIN’ FRIDAYS
Approximately 2,000 people attended the Beachin’ Fridays finale
to enjoy live music by The Embers featuring Craig Woolard. The
band performed original songs, classic hits, and modern covers to
a lively, dancing crowd. The concert ended with a nearly half-hour
long, spectacular fireworks display that celebrated Independence
Day as well as the end of the concert series. This year, Beachin’
Fridays ran for
eight weeks from
May 18th to July
6th. People from
all over the Upstate
converged at the
Amphitheater to enjoy classic beach tunes and performances by
a different band each week, and to participate in free shag dance
lessons by Jeff and Dede Ward. July 6th’s show marked the end of
the third year of concerts. Photos from the events can be found on
FIREFIGHTERS RECOGNIZED FOR OUTSTANDING
BRAVERY AND SERVICE
On June 18th, Mauldin City Council recognized
three groups of Mauldin firefighters for lifesaving
resuscitation efforts that occurred over the past
year. Each recipient was presented a certificate
and a pin. Statistically in cardiac arrest situations,
a patient may end up with permanent physical
deficits or may not survive. The qualifying
significance of this award is that each patient
not only survived cardiac arrest but was also
discharged from the hospital under their own power with zero physical or neurological
defects.
Mauldin personnel were part of three such events last year. On January 26, 2017, firefighters
involved included Russel Anderson, Thomas Guthzeit, Jack Sweeney, Glen Guy, Eric Lutz, and
Andy McAbee. On March 11, 2017, personnel involved were Brandon Cromer, Kevin Gainey,
Charles Harris, Brian McHone, Tim Reardon, and Mike Taylor. And on October 14, 2017, those
involved were Jason Banks, Charles Harris, Tommy
Holsonback, Anthony Horton, and Kyle Strickland.
Mauldin firefighters were also recognized
for outstanding service at the SC Firefighters
Association’s annual conference. Lt. Jeff Nix and
Lt. Jacob Looney were awarded the Meritorious
Action Award for rescuing a citizen from a house fire
on May 23, 2017 on Hickory Lane. SC Firefighters
Association receives nominations from all over the state for acts of bravery for lifesaving in
their respective response areas. The selection committee reviews all submittals and selects
the top two or three incidents to be awarded that year.
THANK YOU!
A special thank you to Mauldin Public Works for all of their hard work for our city!
Public Works ensures that big community events like Beachin’ Fridays and SOOIE,
Mauldin’s Annual BBQ Cook-off take place in welcoming, clean community spaces.
Thanks for going above and beyond!

DEPARTMENT REPORT | RECREATION
Youth Athletics
For the first time in 15 years, Mauldin has a Dixie Softball All-Star team. The 10U softball players
represented the City of Mauldin very well in June at the Dixie Softball Tournament, and although they
did not win, they gained valuable experience and a desire to play again next year.
The Mauldin Dixie Youth Baseball teams also represented Mauldin well at the Dixie Youth Baseball
Tournament, though Mauldin teams did not make it into the district championship game. With every
season the program continues to improve thanks to the hard work and dedication of its players and
coaches. Mauldin’s 14U players compete at the Dixie Youth Baseball Tournament in July at Timken
Sports Complex in Union, SC. The boys will play two out of three series against Union for the district
Championship.
Lacrosse camp doubled in numbers this year compared to last. Mauldin Lacrosse’s partnership with
Coach Schramm and the Mauldin High Lacrosse team has been a tremendous help to the growing
program. Visit mauldinrecreation.com to learn more about Mauldin’s local youth sports programs.

Sports Center
The Silver Sneakers program is now in full swing at the Sports Center. Eighty-three new members
joined the Sports Center through Silver Sneakers in June. Fifteen group fitness classes are part of
the curriculum, with more planned in the near future. In general, group fitness classes like Zumba,
POUND, and Interval Training continue to see high attendance. More than 1,900 members took
advantage of the variety of classes in June.
The Sports Center hosted the Trevor Booker Basketball Camp during the first week of summer. A
non-profit foundation hosted for the seventh year in a row by former Clemson standout and ninthyear
NBA pro Trevor Booker, the camp was formed to teach children the fundamental knowledge
and skills to play basketball. One hundred and seventy campers attended and at the end of the
week, campers met a number of NBA players, including Myles Turner of the Indiana Pacers and
Jawun Evans of the Los Angeles Clippers. Additionally, Mr. Booker generously donated $1,000 to
the City of Mauldin.
The Sports Center’s Summer Fun Day Camp is under way, averaging about 29 campers each day.
Trips taken so far have included Conestee Park, Century Park, and Discovery Island Waterpark.
In July, campers will get to have fun at Gravitopia and enjoy a Greenville Drive game. For more
information on camps, classes, and programs offered by the Sports Center, visit mauldinrecreation.
Ray Hopkins Senior Center
Members at the Ray Hopkins Senior Center began June with barbecue from Little Pigs at their
Taste of Our Town day. June was a busy month, with activities including games of Jungle Bingo,
a household knife-sharpening workshop, and a trip for a wine tasting at City Scape Winery. The
month ended with a trip to enjoy a patriotic concert at Furman University.
The Senior Center’s participation in the Silver Sneakers program has brought an influx of new
people joining classes and using the fitness center. The program has brought positive attention to
the Senior Center’s fun activities, encouraging new guests to become regular members.
The Elderberries Drama Club is gearing up for their next production. Club members have been
working hard on the script and gathering props for their fall performance. Show dates will be
announced soon by the Senior Center.
SUMMER FUN!
The Mauldin Sports Center is hosting Summer Fun Day Camps for kids ages 5 to 14!
Sign up for a day, a week, or the whole program. Each week features a new theme, arts
and crafts, field trips, outdoor activities, and games.
During June, Fire Department personnel trained on new Air Packs, including MSA G1’s and RIT
Bags designed for firefighter rescue and confined space escape. Training was conducted to give
all personnel a chance to perform various skills prior to putting the MSA G1’s in service. Personnel
also studied special topics for June, including the chemical and physical properties of ammonia,
and the EMS standing order of caring for patients that have suffered a stroke.
The MFD hosted the last of a three-part leadership series from the South Carolina Fire Academy at
the Cultural Center with 16 personnel in attendance. The department also hosted a grant-funded
Texas State University Active Shooter class at the Golden Strip Career Center. MFD personnel
attended the SC Firefighters Association conference in Columbia, where two Mauldin firefighters
were recognized for outstanding bravery and service.
In June, the fire department participated in eight events,
including Beachin’ Fridays, a fire safety trailer and talk
at Montessori School in Mauldin, and fire safety talks at
OB Hospitalist group and a Boy Scouts Camp. The Fire
Department reached approximately 3,000 children and
adults this month.

MAKE MUSIC DAY MAKES MUSICIANS IN
MAULDIN
In June, Musical Innovations hosted the annual Make Music Day
event at the Mauldin Cultural Center. The public was invited to join
a ukulele circle to learn the basics of making music on the stringed
instrument, with ukuleles provided for those who did not own one.
This year, the City of Mauldin issued an official proclamation that
named Make Music Day “an annual one-day festival on the first day of
summer that celebrates the ability
of everyone to make music.”
Brianna Smith of WSPA7 emceed the event, while Tracy Leenman
lead the class in each musical exercise. The event was sponsored
by Musical Innovations, NAMM (the International Music Products
Industry), the Mauldin Cultural Center and the Greater Mauldin
Chamber of Commerce.
CENTER FOR COMMUNITY SERVICES PARTNERS
WITH LOCAL LEADERS
The Center for Community Services was selected by The BB&T
Mortgage Center in Mauldin as the beneficiary of their Lighthouse
Project to purchase much needed canned goods and household
items to help our neighbors in need in the Golden Strip. BB&T’s
Lighthouse Project provides corporate financial support to local
charities as well as volunteer services from BB&T associates. Since
the project began in 2009, it has helped improve the quality of life
for more than 15 million people.
The Center for Community Services has also partnered with the
Greater Mauldin Chamber of Commerce, the Fountain Inn Chamber
of Commerce and The Simpsonville Area Chamber of Commerce
in spreading holiday cheer a little early this year with the Center for Community Services’ Christmas
in July Food Drive. During July, donations of nonperishable food items and household goods will
be collected at each city’s Chamber of Commerce Office.
The Mauldin Cultural Center is also accepting donations for both the Center for Community
Services and the Homeless Period Project throughout the summer. Donations of nonperishable
food, household goods, and individually wrapped feminine hygiene products can be brought to
