NATIONAL NIGHT OUT IN THE
CITY OF MAULDIN
This year’s National Night
Out event was a resounding
success, bringing members
of the Mauldin community
out to the Cultural Center
for fun, food, and music.
National Night Out is an
annual community-building
campaign that promotes
police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie
to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live.
National Night Out event was held in conjunction with the Mauldin
Farmers Market at the Mauldin Cultural Center outdoor

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT IN THE CITY OF MAULDIN
amphitheater. Guests enjoyed watching performances by students of T-Motion Dance Studio, a K-9
demonstration, live music by My Girl, My Whiskey and Me, and shopping at vendor booths at the
Farmers Market. The Mauldin Police Department, who organizes each year’s National Night Out in
the city, provided free hot dogs and drinks to the crowds.
Mauldin is one of more than 50 areas in South Carolina committed to forming police-community
partnerships through the National Night Out event. The National Association of Town Watch (NATW)
is a nonprofit, crime prevention organization with works in cooperation with thousands of crime watch
groups and law enforcement agencies throughout the country. NATW introduced National Night Out
in 1984. The first annual National Night Out involved 2.5 million neighbors across 400 communities
in 23 states. National Night Out provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together
under positive circumstances.

POLICE YOUTH ACADEMY PROMOTES SAFETY
AND GOOD CITIZENSHIP
The Mauldin Police Department held its Police Youth Academy in late July for boys and early August
for girls. The program, which has been held every summer since 2007, promotes good citizenship
through education and law enforcement experiences. Middle school-aged students learn about
goal setting and self esteem, conflict resolution, peer mediation, violence and substance abuse,
and the law. The mission of the Academy is to provide the student cadets with the social skills
needed to make them more productive students and members
of our community.
School Resource Officers from both Mauldin High School and
Mauldin Middle School, Mauldin Police Officers, and volunteers
from the community teach the daily curriculum, and educational
field trips are planned for Academy participants.
Each division of the Mauldin Police Department gives instruction
and equipment demonstrations to the cadets, including the
K-9 program, tactical warrant team, traffic enforcement team,
detective division, and dispatch center. The Academy also
included a day with the Mauldin Fire Department where cadets
learned CPR, physical agility standards & first aid skills.
For more information on this and other programs organized by
DEPARTMENT REPORT | RECREATION
Youth Athletics
Fall sports are in full swing. Athletic opportunities for this fall include football, baseball, softball,
cheerleading, and—new for this year—flag football. Flag football’s first season will have games with
Fountain Inn and Greer. Recreation departments across the country continue to see increased interest
in flag football.
Tackle football will host its annual jamboree on August 25th at Sunset Park. Newbold Services donated
10 tackling wheels, which allow players to learn the importance of proper tackling form while keeping
safety as a priority.
Fall baseball and softball began their practices in early August and will begin games on September
11th. Games will be played against teams from Greer, Simpsonville, and Fountain Inn.
The Recreation Department continues to look for a new Assistant Program and Athletic Coordinator.
Applications will be accepted until August 24th. For more information about this and other jobs,
please visit cityofmauldin.org/employment.

Ray Hopkins Senior Center
The summer brings day trips and dance parties to the Ray Hopkins Senior Center. A 50’s-themed
party was a big success, with ladies in poodle skirts and everyone bringing their best moves to the
dance floor.
This month, members enjoyed trips to cool off at Lake Jocassee, taste wine at City Scape Winery,
enjoy a baseball game with the Greenville Drive, and listen to speakers at the Younts Center and
the Kroc Center.
The SilverSneakers program is now fully integrated into the fitness program. The staff and instructors
welcome new members almost every day. New fitness equipment has been added for the instructors
to utilize, with additional machines on the way.
Plans for renovation at the Senior Center are moving along. The Greenville County Redevelopment
Authority will put the project out to bid in the coming weeks, with hopes to begin construction in
late fall or early 2019.
Sports Center
The fitness floor has six new elliptical machines for members to enjoy! These wonderful and easyto-use
machines replaced other machines that were more than a decade old. This addition gives
the Sports Center the most up-to-date elliptical machines on the market.
The SilverSneakers program continues to grow. The Sports Center’s August schedule features
more than 30 classes that are SilverSneakers approved, with more than 100 new members thanks
to SilverSneakers.
The Summer Fun camp program brought healthy fun to the Sports Center this season. The eightweek
camp ended with a trip to Carowinds. The camp succeeded thanks to enthusiasm and hard
work by its organizers and participants, including Stephen Dyar, Jorge Santos, and Caitlin Harris.
Adult basketball registration opened this month, and will close on August 31st. Those interested
can visit the Mauldin Sports Center front desk for more information.
Fire Prevention Education/Training
In July the Mauldin Fire Department trained on the new
personnel accountability system, which was placed in service
on all front line apparatuses. This system helps with firefighter
accountability on emergency scenes as well as interoperability
between various fire agencies within the county. Personnel also
trained on positive pressure ventilation using a new batterypowered
fan, and on three new portable gas detection meters,
which expand capabilities for toxic air monitoring. This month,
fire personnel completed nearly 800 hours of shift training.
MFD participated in six events this month, including Beachin’
Fridays, the City Job Fair, a puppet show at Mauldin Christian
Academy, a fire extinguisher class at Kuehne + Nagel, two car
seat installations, and the Heritage Lake Subdivision Fourth
of July parade. Firefighters also assisted with the Police
Department’s Boys Youth Academy, where students were
taught CPR, how to operate a fire extinguisher, and more. MFD
reached approximately 2,100 children and adults in July.
GIRLS SOFTBALL TEAM RECOGNIZED AT
COUNCIL MEETING
At July’s City Council meeting, Mauldin
recognized the 10U Mauldin Softball All-Star
Team for their representation of the city in the
2018 Dixie Softball District Tournament. This
was the first Mauldin Softball All-Star team
assembled in more than ten years.
The softball program contributes to the growing
numbers for the Recreation Department’s
youth sports programs, bringing more interest
to the city and its community. This opportunity
gave the players and coaches a chance to
compete and look at how other local teams
play and grow, and how Mauldin can improve
to meet higher standards of sportsmanship.
Players on this softball team included Elena
Aponte, Isabella Aponte, Taria Booker,
Rayna Curtis, Emma Haddock, Mattie Kellett,
Vivian Law, Jaycie Santana, Karmyn Simpson,
Madyson Turner, and Skylar Wright. Their team
was coached by Nichole Smith, Amanda Turner, and Chris Ward. For more information on youth
