DEPARTMENT REPORT | RECREATION Youth Athletics For the first time in 15 years, Mauldin has a Dixie Softball All-Star team. The 10U softball players represented the City of Mauldin very well in June at the Dixie Softball Tournament, and although they did not win, they gained valuable experience and a desire to play again next year. The Mauldin Dixie Youth Baseball teams also represented Mauldin well at the Dixie Youth Baseball Tournament, though Mauldin teams did not make it into the district championship game. With every season the program continues to improve thanks to the hard work and dedication of its players and coaches. Mauldin’s 14U players compete at the Dixie Youth Baseball Tournament in July at Timken Sports Complex in Union, SC. The boys will play two out of three series against Union for the district Championship. Lacrosse camp doubled in numbers this year compared to last. Mauldin Lacrosse’s partnership with Coach Schramm and the Mauldin High Lacrosse team has been a tremendous help to the growing program. Sports Center The Silver Sneakers program is now in full swing at the Sports Center. Eighty-three new members joined the Sports Center through Silver Sneakers in June. Fifteen group fitness classes are part of the curriculum, with more planned in the near future. In general, group fitness classes like Zumba, POUND, and Interval Training continue to see high attendance. More than 1,900 members took advantage of the variety of classes in June. The Sports Center hosted the Trevor Booker Basketball Camp during the first week of summer. A non-profit foundation hosted for the seventh year in a row by former Clemson standout and ninthyear NBA pro Trevor Booker, the camp was formed to teach children the fundamental knowledge and skills to play basketball. One hundred and seventy campers attended and at the end of the week, campers met a number of NBA players, including Myles Turner of the Indiana Pacers and Jawun Evans of the Los Angeles Clippers. Additionally, Mr. Booker generously donated $1,000 to the City of Mauldin. The Sports Center’s Summer Fun Day Camp is under way, averaging about 29 campers each day. Trips taken so far have included Conestee Park, Century Park, and Discovery Island Waterpark. In July, campers will get to have fun at Gravitopia and enjoy a Greenville Drive game. Ray Hopkins Senior Center Members at the Ray Hopkins Senior Center began June with barbecue from Little Pigs at their Taste of Our Town day. June was a busy month, with activities including games of Jungle Bingo, a household knife-sharpening workshop, and a trip for a wine tasting at City Scape Winery. The month ended with a trip to enjoy a patriotic concert at Furman University. The Senior Center’s participation in the Silver Sneakers program has brought an influx of new people joining classes and using the fitness center. The program has brought positive attention to the Senior Center’s fun activities, encouraging new guests to become regular members. The Elderberries Drama Club is gearing up for their next production. Club members have been working hard on the script and gathering props for their fall performance. Show dates will be announced soon by the Senior Center. SUMMER FUN! The Mauldin Sports Center is hosting Summer Fun Day Camps for kids ages 5 to 14! Sign up for a day, a week, or the whole program.
