won the national Countdown
Checker of the Year
competition.

CHECKOUT supervisor Morsal
Darwesh loves her job.
And her passion for her role
at Countdown Northlands has
earned her the chain’s Checker
of the Year award.
Miss Darwesh started out as
a checkout operator at Countdown
Moorhouse Ave in 2012
and worked her way up to being
a supervisor.
“It was just a part-time job
I took back at high school to
support my family and to have
some money so I could be more
independent,” she said.
“I’m one of those people who
is confident and loves talking
with people. I do get shy, but
when it comes to work I’m a really
outgoing person.”
She said her role came with its
challenges, but she took them in
her stride.
“When you can turn someone’s
bad day into a good day
and put a smile on their face, it’s
amazing.”
She transferred to the Northlands
branch in April, and she
said the team there inspired
her to take part in the national
Checker of the Year competition.
“All these years the Checker of
the Year award was right there in
front of me and I just wasn’t confident
enough to know whether I
had that much faith in myself to
be able to win,” she said.

“My team encouraged me to
apply . . . my checkout manager
said: ‘I think you have the potential
to win’ so I said ‘okay, I’ll
take your word then’ and that’s
how it started.”
The competition required entrants
to complete several checkout
challenges and test their
knowledge in a final interview.
Miss Darwesh took part in
an in-store checkout competition
last year and came second,
which spurred her to compete
on a national level.
She said she felt “incredible”
after winning the Checker of the
Year award, which came with
prizes of a $2000 Visa Gift Card
and a golden cash register.
“I wanted to do this for my
team, to make them proud,” she
said.
“It feels amazing because I
took a risk. Even though I didn’t
pass the first time, I didn’t give
up. That’s one thing I realised
about myself is that to achieve
something, no matter how many
times I fall, I will get up and
achieve that.”
Miss Darwesh was studying
management and HR at
Canterbury University and
would like to become a customer
service manager in the near
future.

The Ilam MP is on the hunt for
a young person to represent the
electorate at next year’s Youth
Parliament.
Mr Brownlee has taken a young
person under his wing for every
Youth Parliament since he was
elected in 1996.
Youth Parliament is held in
Wellington every three years,
with the next taking place in July.
“It’s an opportunity to impart
experience of what it’s
like to be a Member of
Parliament,” Mr Brownlee
said.
“For someone who is
interested in the general
constructs of civil society
and the processes within
that, it’s a great opportunity.”
He said he would look for a
candidate who was “active here in
our community” and had a passion
for politics
“Someone who has got the ability
to articulate their thoughts,
someone who clearly thinks
about things,” he said.
“And someone who has the
capacity to absorb an argument

Interviews may follow for
short-listed candidates, and
the Youth MP for Ilam will be
selected and announced shortly
after that date.
