Specialist | Public Speaking Humor 303 The Business of Ha Ha Ha! by Mohamed Isa Let’s get to business. In the past two articles, we spoke about why it is crucial to “weave” humor into your speeches to achieve several objectives including making you more likable and memorable among the audience members. Also, we explored the areas where you could find humorous materials: You, your family, work and everywhere! Now, we will talk about time-tested and proven techniques to make your audience laugh. The easiest way. If you are using slides, insert a funny cartoon and enlarge it across the slide. When you show it to the audience, you do not have to explain it. They will get it. You can easily buy cartoons online. If you cannot find a relevant one to your talk, you can always hire a cartoonist to sketch one for you. There are thousands of affordable freelancers on the web. Quote. Just like the cartoon, you may say or display a funny quote on your slides. Surprise. Sometimes you can elicit laughs by saying a statement that the audience did not expect. For example, take a look at the eulogy delivered by Joe Biden to the late John McCain. He got two laughs by saying only eight words! He said this at the beginning of his speech: “My name is Joe Biden. I’m a Democrat.” The audience at the funeral never expected him to say this and that is why they laughed. Try to surprise your audience. Think about the setting and their background. Try it. It works. Pause. I invite you to watch the eulogy of Joe Biden. He said: “My name is Joe Biden.” And then he paused. He then continued: “I’m a Democrat.” And he paused again. Always pause after a punchline. Give your audience a chance to laugh. And make sure you milk the laugh. One time I paused for 14 seconds and enjoyed watching the audience laugh. The rule here is when they laugh, let them laugh. Do not step on their laughter. If you step on their laughter, you are sending the wrong message: “Laugh but not too much.” Timing. Timing has two dimensions. The first one is when are you delivering your speech. “My name is Joe Biden” would not have worked if he delivered it on a different occasion. It worked here because it was the funeral service of a Republican Senator and the audience did not expect it at all. It was a clever line by an experienced speaker. The second dimension is the timing of the punchline delivery. You may have the greatest punchline, but if your delivery timing is flawed, you will miss getting the laugh. Practice your timing until you get it right. The Rule of Three. This is the oldest and most classic technique that comedians use. They will say two words or statements that are related and then follow through with an unrelated word or statement. This tactic tricks the audience into thinking in a certain way, and then the third word or statement surprises the audience with a detour to make them laugh. For example, in my case, I could say: Twenty years ago, I had energy, stamina, and hair! The first two words are related, but “hair” is entirely out of context. Setup and Punchline. History will never be able to tell who is the best: (1) Maradona or Pele, (2) Messi or Ronaldo, or (3) Samosa or Chapatti! I am not sure if you smiled or laughed, but this was an example of a setup and a punchline technique. It is similar to the rule of three in that it makes the audience think in a particular direction, but then you surprise them with a sudden twist. The main difference here is that in the setup and punchline technique, you do not have to stick to three “things,” but instead you can have more than that. For example, you may tell a story to create the setup before you launch your punchline. There you have it, the Why, Where & How of Humor. They say: “Knowledge is Power.” I say: “The application of knowledge is power.” Apply what you learned in these three articles and you will be on your way to becoming a humor powerhouse! A word of caution though, becoming a more humorous speaker requires you to invest a tremendous amount of planning, practice and performance evaluation by yourself, family members and friends.
