Sports groups surprised by new charging plan

THE POSSIBILITY of a 

district -wide charge for all sports 

clubs using recreational reserves 

has come as news to Selwyn’s 

major sporting associations. 

Most organisations have little 

knowledge the district council is 

considering bringing in a consistent 

charge. 

The Selwyn Times revealed last 

week the charge would be to help 

address ongoing issues for sports 

clubs struggling to pay their leases. 

The district council previously 

told Selwyn Times the current 

situation is very “complicated” 

where no fees are charged for 

some sports clubs while for 

others a fee is levied for the 

same level of service. 

Ellesmere Cricket Sub 

Association president Richard 

Clark said he hadn’t heard a lot 

about the district-wide charge 

but will be attending a Lincoln 

Domain board meeting and 

hopes to get more information. 

He said from a Lincoln Cricket 

Club perspective it pays an annual 

fee for the use of the grounds 

at the Lincoln Domain which is 

“pretty minimal.” 

“The debate becomes how 

much is that going to be in terms 

of a fee number for everybody,” 

he said. 

Ellesmere Rugby Sub Union 

chairman Chris Thornley said 

it is unaware of any of its sports 

clubs being charged a rental for 

the grounds it uses. 

“We know nothing about it 

and we find it concerning that 

they are looking to put a levy on 

every club because there is not a 

lot of money in rugby clubs now 

let alone getting charged.”

Waihora Rugby Club president 

Chris Thornley has called time on 

his tenure after 27 years. 

His efforts were recognised at 

a club function at Tai Tapu on 

Friday night. 

The 51-year-old farrier and 

horse trainer said with new 

clubrooms and the senior team 

winning the Country Combined 

and Ellesmere double, the time 

was right to step down. 

“It’s been an amazing time and 

I’ve met so many people through 

this role and rugby in general, 

that it’s really been a great ride,” 

he said.

SOME SPORTS clubs will benefit and 

others will see their leases increase under 

a potential new district-wide council 

charging regime. 

We revealed last week plans the district 

council is considering. This week, some 

key sports organisations (see page 1) were canvassed to get their 

views. 

They were fairly much in the dark over the plans, but expressed 

concerns about paying more than they are now. 

But the new regime is about fairness – hard to argue against 

that. 

I hear Chris Thornley got a good send-off on Friday night. 

Chris has stepped down after 27 years as president of Waihora 

rugby (see page 1). 

He won’t be lost to rugby administration though. Chris is still 

the Ellesmere sub union chairman and vice-president.

Road safety signs 

failed to comply with rules

A COMMUNITY patrol 

electronic billboard road safety 

initiative had to be altered 

because it used the word police 

in its signage. 

Last month Selwyn Times 

featured on its front page the initiative 

which targets speed, cell 

phone use and other road safety 

messages on signs that were 

rotated around the district. 

Police were involved in the 

project, advising the best locations 

to put the electronic signs. 

But Selwyn Community Patrol 

secretary Murray Allison said 

the district council “objected” 

to it displaying “CPNZ [Community 

Patrols of New Zealand] 

POLICE INITIATIVE” as it 

could be seen as advertising. 

District council road safety 

co-ordinator Peter Daly said the 

screen was advertising and it 

was “deemed to be distracting” 

when it flashed between that and 

the main message. 

“The flashing of CPNZ would 

also leave people wondering who 

they are, taking the focus away 

from the road,” Mr Daly said. 

CPNZ district representative 

for Canterbury Ann Smith said 

the district council asked for the 

screen to be removed. She said 

there had been a communication 

breakdown between the district 

council and CPNZ and it was 

unaware of some of the rules. 

Mr Allison said it was also 

asked to move a sign which it 

had unknowingly placed next to 

a school crossing, stick with the 

original messages it was sent and 

just use one screen. 

“The whole point was to make 

drivers look at it,” he said. 

INTERNATIONAL 

The six original messages, 

which were provided by police, 

were “Less speed, less harm”, 

“Drink driving, it’s not worth it”, 

“Focus on the road”, “Seatbelts 

save lives”, “Wear a helmet” and 

“Drive distraction free”.

said she was not sure if the sign 

was advertising, but the district 

council feedback was “absolutely 

justified” and made for a better 

trial.

LARGE SCRUB FIRE 

Four crews from around Selwyn 

contained a large scrub fire at 

Karanga Rd subdivision on 

Saturday night. Dunsandel chief 

fire officer Ian Chatterton said 

they were called at 7pm and it took 

about three and a half hours to 

extinguish. He said a crew stayed 

overnight in case it reignited. 

GOLF CLUB FUEL STOLEN 

Police are investigating after 

about 60-litres of fuel was stolen 

from the Ellesmere Golf Club in 

two incidents on Thursday and 

Saturday nights. Constable Herb 

Inwood said the golf club’s tank 

was unlocked by thieves and 

nearby containers were used to 

carry the fuel. “Because of the price 

of fuel, it’s sort of going to become 

like cigarettes, they’re going to be a 

saleable commodity,” he said. 

WOOL SHED FIRE 

Firefighters were called to contain 

a fire in an old wool shed on 

Hoskyns Rd in Rolleston early 

Monday morning. Crews from 

Rolleston, Lincoln and Burnham 

attended the blaze which destroyed 

the shed. Rolleston station officer 

Phil Glen said they were called 

just after midnight and it took 

about three and a half hours to 

extinguish.

affordable,” she said. 

Mr Thornley said he first came 

to the club as a player at just fiveyears-old. 

He said he was thrilled to see 

the club producing players like 

Mark Maitland and Harry Kirk 

who were pushing to be part of 

the Canterbury set-up. 

“When you see players like that 

starting to achieve their goals it’s 

a great feeling.” 

When Mr Thornley took on the 

role in 1991, he said the job “was 

full of long nights on the phone.” 

“Now with social media, 95 per 

cent of the work can be done over 

email,” he said. 

Mr Thornley said he was 

always left enthused by a new 

wave of players and families 

each season and he credited this 

and the support of his family for 

keeping him in the role for so 

long. 

He said he would continue 

to be actively involved in the 

club and would mentor the new 

committee during the transition. 

Mr Thornley, who is the 

current vice president and 

chairman of the Ellesmere Rugby 

Sub Union, said he was looking

Darfield Tennis Club 

supports a uniform charge 


A DARFIELD sports club is 

supporting a potential districtwide 

charge for clubs using 

recreational reserves. 

High costs to cover the club’s 

rental, rates and outgoings is 

continuing to put pressure on 

the operation of the Darfield 

Tennis Club. 

President Rob Potts said it 

would be “great” if the charge 

could be brought in. 

“We are forever fundraising 

just to stay afloat. Although we 

are not at a point of walking 

away, we are struggling and if 

membership should drop any 

further, then it is a possibility,” 

he said. 

The club is expected to pay 

about $3340 per year. 

These costs are made up of 

about $1250 for insurance, $340 

for compliance costs, $750 for 

ground fees, about $800 for 

rates, $200 for water usage 

The club receives $4000 per 

year from memberships and 

about one third of the money 

goes to Malvern Canterbury 

and NZ Tennis. 

TOUGH GOING: The Darfield Tennis Club is supportive of 

a potential district-wide charge for clubs using recreational 

reserves in Selwyn. 

It charges $135 per year for 

memberships. 

Mr Potts said the club provides 

a “great community asset” 

and the proposed costs are not 

viable. 

It believes a reasonable cost to 

pay is between $0-$500 per year. 

The other issue it is facing is 

its membership has decreased 

from more than 80 to 40 as a 

result in an increase in overhead 

expenses. 

The issue began for the club 

in 2005 when it agreed to move

from Almond Park to the Darfield 

Domain. 

At the time, the club discussed 

a range of issues with the 

district council including the 

financial and siting charges it 

would incur if it moved to the 

domain. 

It was decided the starting 

charges would be based on a 

peppercorn rent between $1-$5 

alongside a $85 rent. 

The district council confirmed 

the Darfield Domain 

would be classified as recreational 

reserve land and it was 

decided not to proceed with 

a lease agreement as it would 

need to be changed once the 

land was re classified. 

The club agreed it would shift 

to the domain as it could build 

a larger facility and by 2009 

the clubrooms were built at the 

Darfield Domain. 

At that time the district council 

informed the club its rent 

would be increased from $5 to 

$250 to “bring it into line with 

other council leases.” 

Following the February 22, 

2011, earthquake insurance 

cover increased due to new 

insurance premiums and the 

domain fee increased to $500 

per annum. 

In 2015 the club received 

confirmation from the district 

council the Darfield Domain 

would be deemed as recreational 

reserve. 

As a result last year, the club 

received an email from the 

district council saying it was 

expected to sign a lease and pay 

about $800 for rates, $200 for a 

water charge and an annual fee 

of $500.

BEE CAUSES CRASH 

A pesky bumblebee caused a 

driver to lose control of his car and 

crash into a bank on Thursday.

Hill and Porters Pass. The man 

sustained minor injuries. The car

ARTIST RECOGNISED 

West Melton’s Henry Turner, 19, 

has won the Breakthrough Artist 

at this year’s National Youth 

Award. The competition, run by 

the Waikato Society of Arts, saw 

Mr Turner take away $1000 in

County, China, on Thursday 

and Mr Broughton will travel 

to Japan on Sunday to visit

Mr Broughton said his trip 

will cost an estimated $7000 to 

$8000. 

Some of the costs in the itinerary 

is covered by the hosts along 

with some of the accommodation 

being home-stay.

and meeting face to face is an 

important part of that relationship,” 

Mr Broughton said. 

While the opportunity 

becomes available every three 

years to travel to both countries, 

this is Mr Broughton’s first trip 

in spite of being on the district 

council for eight years. 

He said for future trips it may 

be appropriate for the district 

council to contribute to airfares. 

The comparison, the 

Christchurch City Council 

makes a decision on the funding 

of the trips.

representative secures access at a 

senior level for business, education 

and infrastructure. 

As a result, companies such 

as Christchurch International 

Airport will often support the 

mayor’s costs.

Mr Broughton said the itinerary 

at each place is controlled by 

the hosts. 

There will be formal welcomes, 

speeches, tours showcasing 

landscapes and food as well 

as a home-stay element giving 

the opportunity to experience 

how a family functions and how 

homes run. 

Mr Broughton will also visit 

the Hiroshima Peace Memorial 

Park and potentially Hokkaido 

depending on its recovery following 

the 6.7 magnitude 

earthquake. 

He is planning to discuss 

further education links and how 

the district council can grow 

its business relationships with 

China and Japan.

Petition can be factored in – Bland

DISTRICT councillor Jeff Bland 

says it would be foolish to ignore 

a petition against the proposed 

Fulton Hogan quarry near 

Weedons and Templeton. 

A 4052-signature petition 

against the planned quarry was 

handed over to the district council 

last Wednesday. 

“It would be a foolish council 

that didn’t take notice of the fact 

that a number 

of people have 

expressed their 

distaste for it,” 

said Mr Bland, 

who represents 

the Selwyn 

Central Ward.

the district 

council “can’t do much” other 

than acknowledge the petition, 

until Fulton Hogan apply for 

resource consent. Their application 

is expected to be submitted 

this month. 

The proposed quarry is at a 

170ha piece of land at Curraghs, 

Dawsons, Jones and Maddisons 

Rds. 

Mr Bland said once the 

resource consent application is 

submitted, councillors can factor 

in the petition. 

“It’s not the council’s issue at 

the moment,” he said. 

Templeton Residents’ Association 

chairman Garry Kilday said 

the residents will now wait for 

Fulton Hogan’s application. 

“We’re waiting for Fulton 

Hogan to do its thing. 

“It’s now been passed to the 

powers that be [district council] 

and it will do its thing with it. 

What happens after you hand 

over a petition, I have no idea,” 

Mr Kilday said. 

The residents aim was to get 

their voice heard, he said. 

“Basically it’s just voicing 

opinion, and you’re getting an 

idea of how much groundswell 

there is against that opinion,” 

Mr Kilday said. 

Earlier this month, he said 

the support for the petition was 

“massive” and it had signatures 

from Australia and the United 

States.

to town [Templeton]” Mr Bland

Rolleston 

Rugby Club 

relocation 

THE DISTRICT council has 

offered a package of funding 

assistance to relocate the rooms 

of the Rolleston Rugby Club from 

Rolleston Reserve to Foster Park. 

The club is scheduled to vacate 

its Rolleston Reserve site from 

next year’s rugby season to make 

way for the Rolleston Town 

Centre development. 

Under the terms of the existing 

lease, the district council is 

responsible for the cost of 

relocating the clubrooms. 

However, because the club is 

looking at the option of building 

a new facility at Foster Park, the 

district council has agreed to 

provide a grant of $250,000. 

That funding is about the 

equivalent of relocation costs, 

as a contribution to the new 

rooms. 

The club requested an 

additional loan to assist with 

construction costs. 

The district council has offered 

to provide a loan of $150,000 to 

support building the club’s new 

facility.

2500 students 

for Koru Games

8 students from around the 

South Island will descend on 

the Selwyn district for the 

annual Koru Games, which 

start today. 

Lincoln, Prebbleton, Rolleston

host some of the 11 sports on 

offer for students who will travel 

from as far north as Kaikoura 

and as far south as Dunedin. 

Badminton, boccia, lawn

turn a lowland drain into a 

living spring: 

The Snake Creek restoration is 

now well under way. 

In less than the first year of 

three, this project is already 

showing us how much can be 

achieved by agency collaboration 

with strong community input. 

Several organisations and 

your zone committee are 

supporting the Water and 

Wildlife Habitat Trust as it seeks 

to restore a significant tributary 

of the Selwyn River/Waikirikiri 

that comes out between our 

favourite fords, Chamberlains 

and Coes. 

The zone committee is committed 

to making Coes Ford 

swimmable again – and projects 

like Snake Creek are crucial to 

achieving that goal. 

At our meeting earlier this 

month, North Canterbury Fish 

& Game officer Emily Arthur- 

Moore gave us a great insight 

into how much had been done 

and how the challenges of a 

project like this are being successfully 

tackled. 

A drain with a declining ecosystem 

is rapidly becoming an 

excellent example of a restored 

waterway offering increased biodiversity 

and improved recreational 

opportunities, while at the 

same time retaining its function 

for adjacent land users. 

Riparian planting, woody 

debris, boulders and weirs are 

being used to recreate an ecosystem 

that will support biodiversity 

and bolster stream health. 

An immediate challenge is the 

amount of sediment coming in, 

especially after heavy rain events. 

Sediment traps and an outof-stream 

detention basin are 

helping to deal with this. 

Another challenge is funding. 

A number of organisations 

have already contributed towards 

the estimated $600,000 to 

complete Snake Creek. 

A crowd-funding programme 

aims to attract $56,000 to restore 

a section of Silverstream (the 

Snake Creek project is part of 

this), of which $11,000 has been 

found so far.

NEW ZEALAND has 41 species 

of ants of which 11 are endemic 

and 30 are introduced species. 

This is very low diversity 

compared to Australia which has 

as many as 1500 species or subspecies. 

The most widespread ant 

species in New Zealand is 

the endemic southern ant 

(Monomorium antarcticum). 

POPULAR: The most widespread ant species in the country is the endemic 

southern ant. 

It is 3-5mm long, but can vary 

in colour between colonies from 

orange, yellow, brown and black. 

The ant species is a generalist 

predator of small insects, but can 

scavenge and feed on honeydew 

from aphids, scale insects and 

mealybugs. 

Nests are made in soil under 

stones, pavers, in or under logs, 

and are common in gardens, but 

do not forage inside houses. 

Dispersing females are winged 

and mate before discarding 

wings and burrowing into 

soil to establish a 

new colony.

CULTUREFEST is coming – 

and residents are being invited 

to join the district council and 

the Christchurch Multicultural 

Council to celebrate Selwyn’s 

growing diversity. 

The event is now in its 

third year with groups from 

around the world showcasing 

their culture through art, 

performance, sport and food. 

District council senior events 

and recreation advisor Dave 

Tippett said CultureFest is 

one of the key actions that the 

district council and partners 

are undertaking as part of the 

recently launched Welcoming 

Plan. 

“The Welcoming Plan provides 

a focus for how we as a district 

can include newcomers in 

community life in Selwyn.” 

“We recognise our district’s 

growing diversity and celebrate 

this with CultureFest. It’s 

also a great way to learn more 

about the people in your 

neighbourhood – we encourage 

everyone to come down and 

attend this free event,” he said. 

Visitors can sit back and enjoy 

over 20 different performances 

by groups from China, Latin the 

United States, Russia, Poland, 

Iran and many more. There will 

also be cuisine from more than 

15 different cultures including 

Indian, Spanish, Bulgarian, 

Nigerian, Malaysian, Moroccan, 

Jordanian, Iranian, Russian and 

Ukrainian. 

For the first time ever, there 

will be an Indian professional 

sport being demonstrated – 

Kabaddi. If you haven’t seen or 

heard of it before, it can be best 

described as a cross between 

rugby and tag, but without a 

ball. 

Residents will also experience 

arts, crafts, as well as activities to 

participate in. 

There is something for the 

whole family to experience 

including bouncy castles, Pedalmania, 

music, games, henna 

tattoos and much more.

Time for Selwyn 

youth to BOOST 

There’s a new youth event coming to Selwyn in the October school holidays. 

Residents from 13 to 18 years of age are being invited to join the Selwyn Youth Council with 

support from the Selwyn District Council in a fun, action-packed week of BOOST events. 

Selwyn Youth Council Chairperson Paige Sullivan says the creation of the new youth event is in 

response to feedback about a lack of things to do in Selwyn for teenagers, particularly during the 

school holidays. 

“We looked at the huge success of KidsFest, an event aimed at children under the age of 13 

during the July school holidays, and thought we should be doing something like that for teenagers 

in our district,” Paige says. 

“BOOST isn’t just a way to fill in your holiday. It’s a chance to meet people, try something 

completely new, or just relax and have fun – all without leaving our amazing district.” 

BOOST 2018 is taking place during the October school holidays and will feature a broad range 

of events, activities and workshops to entertain, empower and develop Selwyn’s youth. Some 

of the events include graffiti art workshops, parkour training, 3X3 basketball competitions, yoga 

sessions, circo arts and a hip hop workshop. 

There are also five key events on offer: BOOST Speak – a TEDtalk style evening with three inspiring 

speakers, BOOST Spook – a horror walk in Foster Park, BOOST Market – a youth market in the 

Rolleston Community Centre, BOOST Splash – a pool party at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre and 

BOOST Out – the grand finale featuring food trucks, a skate jam, graffiti art and live performances.

District Plan Review – are we on the right track? 

Should our planning rules encourage more medium-density development, like semi-detached and 

terraced dwellings and low-rise apartments? 

Should we review the requirement that only family members can live in a family flat? 

Should it be easier to set up a home-based business, as long as certain standards are met? 

These are just a few of the questions that many Selwyn residents are currently giving us feedback on, 

as part of our District Plan Review. 

The District Plan is our ‘rule book’ that governs how people can use and develop land. For example, if 

you own or rent a property, it regulates things like what kind of activities you can undertake, what type 

of buildings can be located or whether you can operate a business and what kind. 

The Plan has to be reviewed every 10 years, and we’re currently undertaking initial public consultation 

on a number of key draft changes, to check whether we’re on the right track with the review so far. 

Hundreds of people have already visited our website to look at the topics we’re reviewing, learn more 

about the proposed changes and provide feedback or complete a survey.

New Coes Ford gates to ensure 

visitor safety 

New gates have been installed at Coes Ford to help ensure the 

safety of visitors to the area during high river flow events. 

The Council has installed the gates after discussions with the local 

fire chiefs and residents of the area who were concerned that many 

visitors are unaware of the risks the Selwyn river poses during high 

river flows. 

Council Asset Manager Murray Washington says most locals are 

well aware that significant amounts of rain in the foothills can lead 

to high river flows in the Selwyn river, but that visitors to Selwyn are 

often not attuned to the associated risks. 

“Many local residents know that flooding at Coes Ford can occur 

up to 12 hours after the rain has stopped in the foothills. However, 

visitors to our district cannot be expected to know that. 

“The river can rise without any sign of rain at Coes Ford. The 

only way we can ensure visitors’ safety is by preventing them 

from crossing the ford during times of high flows, and moving 

them on from the camping area altogether during Civil Defence 

emergencies,” Mr Washington says. 

Mr Washington acknowledges that when the gates are closed, this 

will mean locals will need to use alternative and often longer routes 

to travel into Christchurch City or to other parts of the district. “We 

understand that this could be an inconvenience and we thank local 

residents in advance for their patience and support.” 

The decision to close the Coes Ford gates will be based on 

Environment Canterbury river flow data, and only if significant rain 

in the foothills is likely to cause high and dangerous river flows. 

Previously, during Civil Defence events, the camping areas of the 

Coes Ford campground could be gated off, but the ford itself could 

still be accessed.

The event will play host to food stalls from 15 different 

nationalities; you will be able to buy Indian, Spanish, Bulgarian,

Ukrainian dishes. 

There may be a few extra surprises as well. 

Senior Events and Recreation Advisor Dave Tippett says 

CultureFest provides a great opportunity to try food you may not 

experience in your day to day life. 

“This is a great chance to wander around, and snack on food from a 

wide range of cultures,” Mr Tippett says.

Public consultation opened this week on the draft Regional Public Transport Plan, and Environment 

Canterbury has announced that this Saturday, 22 September, travel on its bus network will be free. 

Saturday is World Car-Free Day. Greater Christchurch Public Transport Joint Committee member and 

Environment Canterbury chair Steve Lowndes says that it is an ideal way to celebrate the beginning of 

public consultation on the Regional Public Transport Plan (RPTP).

taking place. 

Shoulder wear is being carried out on sections of Coaltrack Road, Derretts Road and Hororata

DARFIELD RUGBY Club 

president Scott McIlroy has 

congratulated Southbridge on 

being named the host of the 

Crusaders v Highlanders Super 

Rugby pre-season game next 

year. 

Darfield hosted last year’s 

Farmlands Cup fixture and 

drew a crowd of 5500, including 

then-Prime Minister Bill 

English 

But the Canterbury Rugby 

Football Union’s insistence a 

spectator mound be constructed 

appears to have been Darfield’s 

undoing. 

McIlroy said in May, 

constructing a mound on the 

ground is not viable due to 

summer sport use. 

Southbridge, the home of All 

Blacks great Dan Carter, will 

host the game next year and 

while a date has not been confirmed, 

it will be prior to round

one on February 15. 

“We knew several months 

ago the game wasn’t going to be 

coming back,” McIlroy said. 

“It is a shame because the 

club worked really hard to try to 

make sure we had the event for 

at least a couple of years but it’s 

just one of those things.” 

“We wish Southbridge all the 

best in hosting it and it is at least 

a positive that the game will 

remain in the Ellesmere region.” 

“At the end of the day the 

facilities that we have are what 

we have and trying to make one 

game a year work to please the 

Canterbury Rugby Union probably 

isn’t in our best interests.” 

“We’ll keep working hard to 

make sure our facilities are good 

for our members,” said McIlroy. 

Southbridge president Hamish 

Gilbert said he was delighted his 

club would host the game. 

“It is fantastic to see the 

Crusaders bringing their preseason 

game out into the rural 

community, especially to a 

part of Canterbury that has a 

very long and proud history of 

rugby,” he said. 

“We look forward to hosting 

this prestigious event and being 

able to showcase our fabulous 

facilities to the wider rugby 

community.”

Rangiora on Saturday.

Nigel Smith said poor passing 

and an inability to look after the 

ball for long enough meant the 

Farmers Cup went south for the 

summer. 

“We didn’t make the most of 

our good start,” Smith said. “We 

were our own worst enemy and I 

left feeling we lost the game more 

than they won it.” 

“We let six or seven 

opportunities go begging and 

that kept them in the game.” 

Smith said despite the attacking 

for much of the first half, 

his team was only level 12-12 at 

halftime. 

“The dropped ball and the 

passing issues we had cost us,” 

he said. 

A change at halftime saw 

Glenmark replacement halfback 

Jordy Gray score a crucial try and 

the hosts had the advantage yet 

again. More errors would follow 

and Otago Country pounced. 

“Their tries came against the 

run of play and that was frustrating.” 

Smith said both the scrum 

and line out worked well and 

provided a decent platform for 

winning rugby. 

He praised centre Rob Samson 

who had made the shift into the 

midfield from fullback. 

“He had good footwork and 

soft hands,” he said. “When he 

tried to bust through the defensive 

line he had a lot of success.” 

Tight head prop Patrick Clegg 

was another who impressed with 

his work-rate at scrum time and 

around the park. 

“He’s had a big season for us,” 

Smith said. 

“He’s done his scrummaging 

work really well but it’s been his 

ball carrying which has been a 

big improvement in his game.” 

Canterbury Country will finish 

their representative season with a 

game against Canterbury Maori 

at Linfield Park on Saturday. 

The kick-off time is yet to be 

confirmed.

how netball goes

rural lifestyle and why 

her summer weekends 

can be just as busy as 

her winter ones

Doing it for the love of the game 

What was your first memory of 

netball? 

We were a really sporty family 

of eight boys and five girls. I’m 

the youngest girl and four boys 

are younger than me. We had a 

team for any occasion. My older 

sisters used to play netball in 

Waimate, so I would follow them 

to the courts. 

How did your netball playing 

days progress? 

I played in Waimate then for 

Waimate High School and St 

Pat’s in Timaru as a defender, 

usually a wing defence. I made 

the South Canterbury Country 

team for the first time in 1969. 

That was a composite team from 

Waimate, Fairlie and Twizel, 

which went to the nationals in 

those days. 

What got you into coaching? 

I had bad knees from playing 

the game on the concrete courts. 

I had one knee replacement two 

years ago and will need another 

one soon. When I left South 

Canterbury I started coaching 

the Dunsandel A team in 1987 

and enjoyed it. I was made a life 

member there in 2007. 

When did your association 

with Greenpark begin? 

I came to Greenpark in 2002 

and started coaching their 

premier team. We have had a 

fair bit of success over that time. 

We won the Selwyn competition 

in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2011 

and of course, this year. The girls 

don’t train during the week and 

to be honest, I felt quite guilty 

about winning the final like we 

did because Broadfield was the 

better team leading up to the 

final. We don’t have a manager 

and I have to find out which one 

of their friend’s turns up so we 

have a primary carer. It’s a tough 

way to coach, I’m just fortunate 

we have a lot of good readers of 

the game out on court. 

What’s the most enjoyable 

thing about netball for you? 

I do it for the love of the game. 

What about your children? 

One of my daughters is the 

deputy principal at Waimate 

High School which shows you 

what a small world it is. While 

the other still plays netball in the 

Greenpark A team. 

What do you do for a job? 

My husband Leo and I have 

been running Greenacres Fibre 

Processing. We have 300 to 400 

black and coloured sheep and 

their wool is used in a lot of craft 

work. We also export the wool to 

places like Japan and Russia. It’s 

something we’ve been involved 

in for the last 30 years. 

What makes a good fleece of 

wool? 

It comes down to good food, 

good grass and good soil but a lot 

of that is quite technical. 

What do you do in your spare 

time? 

I used to play lawn bowls in 

the summer, but I struggle to 

get down on my knee now. We 

do a lot of wool showing and 

that takes up a lot of our time 

on Saturdays and to be honest, it 

takes me all summer to get over 

the netball season. 

Do you plan on returning 

next year to coach Greenpark 

A? 

I think I’ve got another year 

in me. We need another goal 

shooter but we have our eye

mentioned to the girls about 

dropping down to the masters 

grade but most of them tell me 

they’d rather retire than play in 

that grade. My daughter played 

in the team but swears to me the 

final was her last game so maybe 

I can retire and she can take over 

or I could become our primary 

carer. 

How is the club going? 

I think we are the only team 

representing Greenpark and 

that’s been part of the reason I’ve 

stuck around and some of the 

girls have done the same thing. 

I’d like to see the club keep 

going.

Netball South Pacific Island 

Rolleston Samoa Experience October 2018 

The team donating netball supplies 

to Netball Samoa in 2013. 

The Rolleston Netball Golden Oldies 

are supporting a third team of nine 

young netball ladies on a cultural 

experience to Samoa. The girls 

have been together for a year now, 

working to raise money for the trip. 

They have had to run meetings, 

take minutes, plan fundraisers, keep 

budgets, and source donations of 

netballs, umpires tees, old netball 

uniforms and stationery supplies. 

While in Samoa they will initially 

stay in Apia working with Netball 

Samoa helping out at several 

netball coaching and umpiring 

clinics. They will also play the 

national Under 14 side along with 

other local teams. They will then 

travel to the big island of Savaii (a 

trip in itself!) staying in the village 

of Fagamalo. While there they will 

attend a traditional church service 

and Sunday school, and also spend 

the day at Fagamalo Primary School. 

The remainder of the trip will be 

back in Apia attending school at 

Samoa College, St Mary’s College 

and the Peace Chapel Primary 

School. 

Leanne, the team manager, is 

excited to be returning to her old 

school Samoa College but is pinning 

her hope on the Rolleston girls to 

win the challenge netball game! 

The Golden Oldies themselves have 

enjoyed several netball festivals 

both locally and overseas and 

are looking forward to sharing 

some of the same netball 

fellowship experiences with 

the girls. 

The Samoan experience will 

also reinforce the value of 

iNSPIRE about being generous, 

being part of a team and being 

grateful.

The 16-year-old Lincoln 

High School student said 

the start of the under-19 

World Triathlon Grand 

Final race, on the Gold 

Coast, “felt like being in a 

washing machine” and it 

was something he would 

need to work on. 

Rush, the youngest competitor 

in the field finished 

19th in a time of 1hr 1min 

2sec in the 16 to 19-yearold 

category on Thursday. 

He swam for 750m, cycled 

for 20km and finished 

with a 5km run. 

“I wasn’t used to having 

70 other starters to contend 

with in the water,” he said. 

“I was bumped around 

with a lot of arms and 

elbows.” 

Rush has a cut above his 

eye from a stray elbow during 

the swim. 

He said after coming out 

of the water in the middle 

of the field, he was able to 

make up some ground during 

the bike leg. 

It was the 25 deg C temperatures 

and race fatigue 

which caught up to Rush 

on the second leg of the 

run. 

“I didn’t have the legs to 

maintain the speed that I 

wanted but the heat played 

a big part in that, coming 

out of the New Zealand 

winter made for challenging 

conditions,” he said. 

“There were some dark 

moments in the run when 

the body started to hurt but 

I just tried to push on as 

best I could.” 

Rush said he would work 

on trying to make cleaner 

starts and try to build up 

his endurance on the bike 

for the upcoming New 

Zealand season. 

“I think the swim leg 

caught me off-guard a little 

bit so that will be a focus 

but for my first big international 

event I was happy 

with how the race went,” 

he said. 

Rush will compete at the 

New Zealand Secondary 

Schools’ Road Cycling 

Championships at the 

end of this month and 

would contest the Pak’n 

Save Triathlon Festival in 

November.

FINALLY, spring has 

arrived, much to the delight 

of gardeners around the 

country. 

Although September can 

more often than not be 

a wet and windy month, 

temperatures are on the 

rise, producing signs of 

spring throughout the 

garden. 

Vege garden 

Time for the final harvest 

and removal of winter 

maturing vegetables. By 

staggering planting times, 

these vegetables have 

hopefully supplied your 

kitchen with continuous 

food over winter. 

Where conditions allow, 

for example, soil is not too 

wet and the temperature 

is rising, you can plant 

the ‘hardier’ summer 

vegetables. These include 

asparagus, beetroot, 

cabbage, cauliflower, 

carrots, onion, radish, 

silverbeet and spinach. 

Improve existing 

vegetable plots by adding 

generous amounts of 

compost before planting 

new seasons vegetables. 

Maintain a wary eye for 

slugs and snails as they will 

rapidly emerge in search of 

tasty seedlings. 

Flowering annuals 

Time to prepare your 

summer flower garden as 

winter annuals are finishing 

flowering. It’s a little early 

for planting traditional 

summer annuals, but 

there are a number that 

‘transcend’ this typical 

growing season such 

as alyssum, calendulas, 

cornflower, lobelia, 

nemesia, pansies and violas. 

If you want to grow your 

own summer flowering 

annuals from seed, sow 

them now in specific seed 

raising mix and water 

regularly to ensure even 

germination. Seedlings 

should be mature enough 

for transplanting into the 

garden approximately six to 

eight weeks after sowing. 

Bulbs 

Carefully mark the 

position of your late winter/ 

early spring flowering 

bulbs if you want to grow 

other plants in the same 

area over the summer 

months. Where bulbs are 

flowering well, allow them 

to naturalise in the garden. 

This applies especially to 

crocus, freesias, hyacinths, 

iris, lachenalias, narcissus 

and watsonias. 

Fruit trees 

In warmer areas, citrus 

are still producing masses 

of sweet fruit. Stone 

fruit, apricots, cherries, 

nectarines, peaches and 

plums are all in full bloom, 

as are pip fruit, apples 

and pears. Hopefully, 

weather conditions allow 

for successful pollination 

by bees, with sunny days 

and no strong winds. Early 

strawberry varieties are 

now beginning to set fruit, 

especially in warmer parts 

of the country. Maintain a 

good mulch of pea straw 

or hay around the plants to 

help keep the berries clean 

and healthy. 

Roses 

Apply compost around 

the base of existing and 

new plants as it’s beneficial 

for the plant’s health. 

Commence fertiliser 

applications from early 

October onwards.

The weather the past week has been 

delightful, but we need to remember 

that the spring weather can be unsettled 

through this month. Good gardeners are 

patient gardeners and know that timing is 

key. Be mindful that we can still get frosts 

so don’t race out and plant seeds in the 

garden just yet. Make sure that seedlings 

are well protected, and that you only plant 

things that are suitable for our climate. If 

you have a greenhouse, or a sunny spot 

inside you can raise seeds in Seed Raising 

Mix in preparation for planting out the 

seedlings later in the season.

Creating a raised veggie garden 

If you are starting from scratch use our veggie garden 

mix, it is designed to be planted straight into as it 

has all the necessary nutrients needed to encourage 

healthy growth and development. 

For established gardens now is the time to dig 

through some compost and some fertiliser. If you 

prefer a more organic approach then use sheep 

pellets or blood and bone. 

What to grow, lettuce, carrots, beetroot, onions, 

celery, broccoli, peppers, coriander, beans, spinach, 

spring onions, peas. 

Growing from seeds, use our seed raising mix to 

raise seeds such as, carrots, radishes, peppers, peas, 

silverbeet, chillies, tomatoes, cucumbers.

Turbocharged boost 

for Hyundai Kona

HYUNDAI New Zealand 

has been well served by 

an extensive sport utility 

vehicle range. 

For many years it has had 

Santa Fe, IX crossover, and 

Tucson, all have sold with 

considerable success in 

New Zealand. Not a company 

to rest on its laurels, 

Hyundai realised the need 

to explore other segments 

of the SUV market, and 

just recently a newcomer 

landed – the Kona. 

The Kona is a small SUV, 

not tiny, but it is a car for 

those who like to travel 

light. It arrives here in two 

four-cylinder petrol engine 

variations a 2-litre normally 

aspirated unit and a 

1.6-litre turbocharged unit. 

The latter arrives with fourwheel-drive, 

the 2-litre 

model is front wheel-drive 

only. 

Prices start at $31,990 for 

the 2-litre, an extra $5000 

will buy you into a high 

grade Elite version, while 

the turbocharged models 

sit at $36,990 and $41,990 

(Elite). At the time of print, 

Hyundai New Zealand has 

just launched a fully electric 

Kona, pricing for the 

EV is yet to be announced 

The subject of this 

evaluation is the Elite turbo 

which drives through a 

seven-shift dual clutch 

automatic gearbox. 

Hyundai claims 130kW at 

just 5500rpm, if you add 

in 265Nm all of the way 

from 1500rpm to 4500rpm, 

it’s easy to fathom out how 

free-revving and willing the 

engine is through the midrange. 

That also has a complementary 

effect on fuel 

usage. Rated at 6.7-litre per 

100km (42mpg), the Kona

at around 1500kg there’s 

not a lot of weight to drag 

around, so that is also beneficial. 

Against the stopwatch 

the Kona turbo will cut 

out a standstill to 100km/h 

time of 8sec, and will leap 

through a highway overtake 

in 4.8sec. 

The Kona feelts taut and 

tightly connected to the 

road through the steering. 

That’s an attribute I rate 

highly in any car, and it 

doesn’t disappoint. A lot of 

that is due to its compact 

stature, the Kona is agile 

and nimble. Of course, 

four-wheel-drive adds in 

a lot of natural grip, the 

Kona feels sedan-like with 

its handling and comes 

without the cost of suspension 

firming. 

Occupant comfort is high, 

the spring and damper rates 

are a balanced compromise, 

the Kona has suspension 

which deals to all road 

surfaces with positive 

absorption. In comparison 

to its 2-litre stablemate, 

the four-wheel-drive 

version has to have a fully 

independent rear end and 

that provides good freedom 

of movement at the rear, 

something that hampers the 

front-wheel-drive version 

ever so slightly. 

That aside, the Kona in 

both forms still has my seal 

of approval. In Elite form it 

wants for nothing in terms 

of specification, it has a 

high level of fitment. 

Personally, I’d opt for 

the non-Elite model, I’m 

more of a cloth trim fan as 

opposed to leather, but that 

is a personal preference. 

However, in all forms 

the Kona is a worthy 

addition to the Hyundai 

stable.

Pork industry seeks more 

stringent border controls 

New Zealand Pork is calling for greater border protection against the 

spread of African swine fever (ASF), a deadly pig disease sweeping 

through China and Eastern Europe. 

New outbreaks of the disease, which has 

no effective treatment or vaccine, have 

been reported recently in China – home to 

half of the world’s population of pigs. The 

disease has also been expanding through 

Eastern Europe since 2014, where it first 

spread from Lithuania to Poland and 

Estonia. New outbreaks this year have been 

reported in Russia, Romania and Hungary. 

A 10th EU country – Bulgaria – has 

reported the disease this month. Officials 

in Denmark, one of Europe’s leading pork 

exporters, have expressed concern that it is 

“only a matter of time” before ASF reaches 

their country. 

While the disease presents no risk to 

humans, it is devastating to local pig 

populations and the commercial industry. 

Often fatal in pigs, once the disease is 

detected, entire herds need to be culled 

to prevent further spread of the infection. 

African swine fever can also be passed on 

through infected meat – it can survive for 

years in frozen carcases – and spread from 

clothing, boots and soil. 

NZ Pork chair Eric Roy says the industry 

is asking for the Government to step up 

surveillance of the spread of the disease 

and consider more stringent controls of 

pork imported from affected countries. 

“New Zealand imports considerable 

quantities of pigmeat from the EU where 

the disease continues to spread,” Mr Roy 

says. 

“With the way the disease spreads, we 

are particularly concerned about the risk 

of African swine fever arriving in this 

country through infected meat from many 

of the regions which currently export pig 

meat products to New Zealand. 

“This would have a potentially 

devastating effect on the local commercial 

industry, which generates over $750 

million per year for the local economy.” 

Almost 60 per cent of pork consumed 

in New Zealand is imported from over 

25 countries around the world, including 

China, Poland and Estonia, as well as 

Denmark and Spain. So far in 2018, almost 

53,000 kilograms of pork products were 

imported to New Zealand from China, 

including a small amount classified as 

dried product – of particular concern as 

the ASF virus in these products might 

not have been inactivated through the 

treatment process. 

“The major risk to our industry is that 

infected meat gets into the lifestyle or 

para-commercial pig population through 

the feeding of uncooked food scraps, a 

practice that is banned but can still occur 

when hobby farmers are unaware of the 

risks. Our wild population could also come 

into contact with food waste, which is a 

major problem in Europe.” 

At least one outbreak in Europe was 

traced to sausage meat left behind after a 

roadside picnic. 

“This sort of occurrence is completely 

outside the control of our farmers, and 

yet an African swine fever outbreak could 

potentially wipe out our local industry, if it 

was to spread from the hobby farm or feral 

pig population,” Mr Roy says. 

The vast majority of official notifications 

of ASF being made to the World 

Organisation for Animal Health by 

countries involved in the current outbreak 

of the disease in Eastern Europe declare 

the source of the outbreak to be ‘unknown 

or inconclusive’. 

“This is particularly important given that 

New Zealand is trading pork with the EU 

sector under virtually identical rules that 

apply to inter-EU trade – standards which 

have done nothing to stop the continuing 

spread of the disease through Europe,” Mr 

Roy says.

With the Metservice forecasting a long, 

hot summer for Canterbury, homeowners 

will want to make full use of their outdoor 

areas to entertain family and friends, 

so having lawns and gardens in tip-top 

condition will be a priority. 

Phil Hudson of Freeman Irrigation 

advises that spring is the best time to have 

maintenance work done on irrigation 

systems so they are in good working order 

to meet summer demand. This will also 

prevent the inconvenience and additional 

costs of having landscaping repaired if 

problems are discovered and need fixing 

during summer. 

“Some irrigation system problems are 

easily fixed, but they have to be identified 

to be repaired,” Phil says, “so now is the 

ideal time to book in for maintenance and 

servicing.” 

The most important part of keeping an 

irrigation system in good working order 

is having regular maintenance done on the 

sprays, rotors and solenoid valves, Phil says. 

Some of the basic problems commonly 

encountered are: 

• Clogged sprinklers 

• Leaking sprinklers and valves 

• Obstructed sprinklers 

• Leaking/blocked solenoid valves 

• Overspray onto footpaths, streets or 

buildings 

• Design problems 

• Missing nozzles 

• Pipe leaks or breaks 

Smart controls for irrigation systems are 

convenient for homeowners, and many 

people have been asking about those, Phil 

says. 

“We have a range of smartphone 

controllers and rain sensors that can be 

fitted to most systems, allowing you to have 

easy control from anywhere. 

“Also, if you wish to save money and 

conserve water, a good rain sensor is an 

affordable solution. We can supply and 

fit the Wireless Rain-Clik Sensor that 

automatically shuts off your sprinkler 

system, so you don’t have to worry if you 

are away from home when it rains.” 

As well as playing a key role in the 

local economy, Phil also supports the 

community. He has recently 

donated and installed an 

irrigation system at Rolleston 

College, where the students 

are developing a vegetable 

and fruit tree garden, with the 

focus on sustainability.

Enjoying your outdoor living areas and 

increasing air flow through the home on 

hot summer days is easy when there are 

bi-fold doors or triple sliders. 

With the doors folding into one another, 

bi-folds allow part or all of a space to be 

opened, and as they are slim line they only 

take up a small space when slid across, with 

the rally wide opening letting the outdoors 

into your living room. 

Triple sliders also have a generous 

opening and are great where there is 

limited deck space or a smaller courtyard. 

These pick-up sliders operate on a system 

where the first panel slides in behind the 

second, picking it up and sliding both in 

behind the third panel for a seamless twothirds 

opening. 

The advantages of bi-fold doors and triple 

sliders is the large glass area that allows 

the sun to warm up the house in winter 

as double glazing holds the heat in while 

keeping it out in summer. 

Bi-fold doors and triple sliders are two 

of the most popular aluminium joinery 

doors produced by Ultimate Design and 

Renovation, who manufacture aluminium 

joinery to suit the style and size of any 

home. They also offer the option of low-e 

glass, which has an insulated spacer bar and 

is filled with argon gas ensuring better heat 

retention, less condensation and reduced 

solar gain.

their casement windows are a real winner. 

These tall, skinny windows can be opened 

to a 90-degree angle providing excellent 

ventilation. Many of their customers have

which is ideal for handing food out to the 

barbecue area and bringing fresh air into 

the kitchen. 

Trapping the sun while blocking the wind 

and keeping dry from the rain is easily 

achieved with a conservatory or windbreak 

wall or roof. You can have a Therma-panel 

roof (a strong yet lightweight product), 

have full glass, or choose to have some glass 

panels to allow light through. Windbreaks 

protect from the elements, making them 

great in inclement, warm weather when you 

would rather be outside. All are customdesigned 

to suit the architecture of the 

house, whether it’s a modern or character 

home. 

Unlike conservatories, not all windbreaks 

need building consent (size and their siting
