Old Milford Meadow - ‘Secret Garden’
If you live near or walk through All Saints’
Churchyard, you cannot have helped noticing
activity in the nearby overgrown meadow
behind the yew hedge.

late Miss
Diana
Gillespie
bequeathed
the southern
part of the land to the Milford community. The
Parish Council is the new owner of this part,
whilst the larger northern part, off Knowland
Drive/Dacres Walk, is now in the hands of
Christchurch Priory.

association wishes to help restore this very old
garden for public use, let Sarah know at the
Parish Office (644410) and you will be
circulated about future work sessions.

In early September, both MCV and the New
Forest Area Conservation Volunteers,
commenced the restoration of the meadow,
community orchard and garden. The first job
was to clear the gateway to allow a tractor flail
machine to get
in to clear dense
stands of
bramble
throughout the
site and to take
its first proper
hay cut for
many years.

The rampant bramble covering the garden area
and surrounding the existing Hinoki Cypress,
Medlar, Hawthorn, Weeping White Mulberry,
Roses and Fruit trees was all cleared away,
leaving work that can now be undertaken by
hand.
