entering the classroom
Good communication is at the core of
teaching and should be at heart of
educational building design. It is
vitally important that both teachers and
students be able to speak and listen within
any learning environment and this ability to
communicate is affected by a number of
factors; from the prevention of distracting
noises entering the classroom to the control
of reverberation within the space.
Aside from the obvious benefits of the ability
to hear speech clearly, a high level of speech
intelligibly ensures that the teacher can speak
with confidence and without effort; meaning
that they are able to teach for longer periods
without overexertion and with lower stress
levels. Thus improving the working
environment for the teacher as well as their
effectiveness.
Education is not only limited to the
classroom, large resource areas such as halls
and libraries require the same consideration.
Dining halls are also often overlooked as
learning spaces, but vital communication and
social skills are developed in these areas –
and rely heavily on speech communication.
Children with learning difficulties require
spaces with additional measures, but they
also benefit hugely from acoustically
controlled spaces; the prevention of
distracting noises, the control of room
‘hubbub’ and raised levels of speech
intelligibility all add together to make it a
more comfortable environment for those
with additional needs.
All of this is recognised within Building
Bulletin 93 (BB93) where design criteria are
given to ensure educational environments
are not only protected from external (and
internal) noise but also provide a high level of
speech intelligibly through the use of
reverberation control.
