Canada
Adventure on
Athabasca
By Solange Hando
Spreading out from the
‘Columbia’, the largest icefield
in the Rockies, Athabasca
is among the world’s most
accessible glaciers, a popular
day trip from Lake Louise,
Jasper or even Banff, though
this involves a longer drive.
Winding along the Continental
Divide, past soaring peaks,
forests, waterfalls and lakes,
the Icefields Parkway leads
almost to the very edge, near
the meeting point of the
Jasper and Banff National
Parks.
Up there the Discovery Centre
is the first point of call with
exhibits on the history and
movements of the ice and
the area’s natural world. It
is the perfect introduction
before tackling the day’s
adventure but one should
be prepared for changing
weather and high altitude,
with the glacier’s average
height around 3,000 metres.
There are walking trails for
the brave and well-organised
treats in season, led by
knowledgeable and highly
entertaining guides.
First on anyone’s list is the
award-winning skywalk, just a
five minute bus transfer from
the centre. Built into the rock,
carefully integrated into the
environment with near-zero
footprint, it begins along a
vertiginous cliff’s edge then
steps out on a semi-circular
look out with a glass floor,
perched 280 metres above
the valley. There you are,
suspended between heaven
and earth, the Sunwapta river
meandering far below, the red
craggy rocks almost within
arm’s reach, the soaring
birds, mighty glaciers and
snow-covered peaks rising all
around.
Even more exciting is the
iconic ride on one of the giant
Ice Explorers. The first few
minutes include a steep scary
descent on a stone track until
you reach the edge of the
Athabasca, a tongue of ice, six
km long and thicker in places
than the Eiffel Tower. Glacial
vistas, snowy mountains
etched into the sky, it’s like
the end of the world, even
though the Explorer can only
venture so far on the crunchy
surface. The ice is pure blue
in places as this is the only
colour it cannot absorb. Then
the ‘giant’ stops, giving you
ten minutes or so to walk
around the safe icy section.
No one ventures beyond the
danger cones for untouched
snow and ice are amazingly
thick, dotted with hidden
crevasses and water holes
where lives have been lost.
Sometimes a deep rumble
echoes in the thin mountain
air and you might spot an
avalanche tumbling down the
slope just ahead of you. Don’t
expect to be alone on the
glacier, it is highly popular, but
whatever the crowds, you can
switch off and commune with
the natural world, so mighty
and inspiring.
Visitors leaving before dusk
are likely to see bears and elks
close to the road, and those
on the way to Jasper might
enjoy the last rays of the sun
on the Athabasca waterfall.
Meanwhile, high above on the
edge of the glacier, the lucky
ones settle down in the lodge
for a starlit night. Strange
noises in the dark may remind
them that the Athabasca is
always on the move, receding
by around five metres a year.
Salted Caramel, Chocolate and Chilli Tartlets
It may sound like an unusual
combination but a hint of fiery chilli
complements a rich
chocolate dessert
perfectly.
Serve with a spoonful of thick cream
or Greek yogurt for a really indulgent
dessert.
Makes 6
Ready in 1 hour,
plus cooling and chilling time
Ingredients:
• Flour, for dusting
• 250g ready-made sweet
shortcrust pastry
• 260g jar salted caramel sauce
• 25g unsalted butter
• 100g dark chocolate, broken
into pieces
• 1 small red chilli, deseeded
and chopped (see Tip)
• Shredded fresh basil leaves,
to decorate (optional)
• Icing sugar, for dusting
TIP
Blanch the chopped chilli pepper
in boiling water for 1 minute,
then refresh under cold water
and pat dry with kitchen paper.
This will remove a little of the
fiery heat from the chilli. If
you prefer, replace the fresh
chopped chilli with a sprinkle of
dried chilli flakes.
1. Lightly dust a work surface with flour and
roll out the pastry to about 3mm thickness.
Use to line six 10cm tartlet tins. Prick the
bases with a fork and chill in the fridge for
30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan
180°C/gas mark 6.
2. Line each tartlet tin with a circle of baking
paper and fill with baking beans. Bake blind
in the preheated oven for 7-8 minutes.
Remove the beans and paper and bake
the tarts for a further 4-5 minutes until the
pastry is crisp and pale golden. Leave to
cool completely, then remove the pastry
cases from the tins and place on a board.
3. Divide the salted caramel sauce between
the cold tartlet pastry cases, smoothing the
surfaces level with the back of a teaspoon.
Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
4. Place the butter and chocolate in a
heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering
water and leave until melted. Remove the
bowl from the heat and stir the mixture
until smooth. Cool for 20 minutes then
spread over the salted caramel filling. Chill
for 1 hour or until set.
5. To serve, sprinkle the chopped chilli pepper
over the set chocolate topping and scatter
over the shredded basil (if using). Dust with
icing sugar.
Coulsdon & Purley Fundraising Group
Raise £63,000 in six years
The Marie Curie Coulsdon & Purley Fundraising
Group have recently celebrated hitting an amazing
milestone of raising £63,000 in their first six
years.
One of the Group’s favourite activities is their
annual Marie Curie Blooming Great Tea Party,
where they invite along the local community to
join them a cup of tea and a slice of delicious
homemade cake!
The Coulsdon and Purley Fundraising Group make
an enormous difference locally by helping to
raise the vital funds for Marie Curie Nurses. This
means we can continue to provide free care and
emotional support to people living with a terminal
illness and enabling them to spend their last days,
in their own homes surrounded by the people and
things they love most.
The Fundraising Group organise fundraising
activities and collections in the local
community, raise awareness about Marie Curie
and the services provided and encourage new
volunteers to get involved. This is in addition
to supporting the charities major fundraising
campaigns such as the Great Daffodil Appeal and
Blooming Great Tea Party.
Sharon McKenna, Community Fundraiser at Marie
Curie, said: “The Coulsdon & Purley Fundraising
Group continue to make a huge difference to
Marie Curie and the community they serve.
They raise a huge amount of money and awareness,
whilst making good friends along the way
and having lots of fun too! It’s been wonderful to
watch them grow over the last few years”
The Coulsdon & Purley Fundraising Group are
looking to expand their numbers so they can host
more events and get more people in the local area
involved with their fundraising.
If you would like to join our Coulsdon & Purley
Fundraising Group or to find out more about the
Gardening
Beautiful Bulbs by Pippa Greenwood
Ornaments on your windowsills
and shelves are pretty enough,
but why not make your house all
the more special this winter with
some bowls of bulbs that are really
brimful of colour, perhaps with
gorgeous perfume too? You can
buy ready-planted bowls of bulbs
later in the year, but act now and
you could soon have a stunning
display at a fraction of the price.
The best bulbs are those described
as ‘prepared’, which basically
means they have been put through
a carefully planned sequence of
conditions to ensure that they
flower well, reliably and uniformly
indoors. Prepared bulbs are often
a bit pricier but are still great
value. You can also use standard
bulbs but the results may be
unpredictable. I like to use some
prepared hyacinths, but just
cannot help creating more bowls
of non-prepared bulbs too.
Visit your local garden centre
now and you should see a good
array of bulbs for sale, plus all the
other things you need. Special
bulb bowls are a good buy, and
are available in just about every
colour imaginable. They’re rather
like huge soup bowls, but in
plastic or china. Unlike standard
pots they have no drainage holes,
which is better for your furniture!
You can use normal flower pots,
but do make sure you put a fully
waterproof container or saucer
beneath each pot – or watering
will prove messy later on.
You can use standard multipurpose
compost for indoor
bulb displays, but better still buy
yourself some bulb fibre or special
compost formulated for indoor
bulb planting. It’s more expensive
than multi-purpose compost, but
performs better in bulb bowls or
other containers without drainage.
Hyacinths for forcing are
available in just about every
shade imaginable – red, pink,
white, cream, yellow and blue.
It is best to use a single colour
in any one container as there is
often some variation in flowering
times between the colours, and
ideally you want all the flowers out
simultaneously. Specially prepared
crocus, paperwhite narcissus and
some other daffodil types are also
available. If you want to make
some seriously low-cost bowls,
then do as I do and buy a large bag
of inexpensive dwarf narcissus,
such as the cheerful, often multiheaded
‘Tete-a-Tete’. They work
very well, as do crocuses.
Fill your bowl about one third full
of compost for larger bulbs to one
32 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!
half full for smaller bulbs. Firm the
compost gently, but don’t compact
it or the roots of the bulbs will not
penetrate it well and you’ll end
up with bulbs popping out of the
top of the bowl. Position the bulbs
pointed end uppermost – you
can put them quite close to each
other but not so close that they
are touching their neighbours, and
make sure they are not in contact
with the sides of the bowl either.
Nestle the bulbs gently into the
compost and then top up with
compost so that just the noses (the
pointed end from which the shoots
will appear) are poking out. Water
the compost lightly, making sure
it is moist but not waterlogged.
Then cover the bowls loosely with
a black bin liner and put them in
a cool, dark place – a cool shed,
garage or cupboard under the
stairs is ideal. It needs to be both
dark and cool or the bulbs will not
form good root systems.
Check the bowls every week or
so and apply a little more water if
necessary. It is time to bring the
bowls out into the daylight once
the shoots are about 2-3cm tall,
which usually takes 3-5 weeks. Put
them in a cool spot with plenty
of natural daylight – a cool but
frost-free greenhouse or a spare
room window sill for instance. The
shoots will continue to grow and
develop a healthy green colour;
they will now need a little more
water.
Once the flower buds just start to
colour up you can put your bulb
bowl in a warmer room, where
you will soon be able to enjoy its
perfume and good looks. If you
want to give the bowl a really
smart look, cover the compost
with some moss or tie a seasonal
ribbon around the bowl.
Visit Pippa’s website www.
pippagreenwood.com and you’ll
History
The History of Specs
By Catherine Rose
Said to be man’s fifth most
important invention, many of
us see our spectacles as an
indispensable dispensable.
And with the array of modern
designs available now, they are
usually a fashion statement
too. It’s a far cry from the 1930s
when they were described as
‘medical appliances’.
Wearing glasses has often been
associated with stigma and it
wasn’t really until the 1960s
and 70s – when figures in the
public eye such as John Lennon,
Michael Cane and Elton John
turned their glasses into a
signature style – that they
began to be seen as potentially
desirable accessories. But where
did the idea of wearing lenses
over your eyes to help correct
your sight even begin?
Lenses have been around for
a long time. The properties of
optical lenses were known as far
back as the ancient Greeks.
The Vikings would grind lenses
out of rock crystal, and in the
12th century in Europe,
smooth-bottomed spherical
magnifying lenses were called
‘reading stones’.
It is generally accepted that the
first actual spectacles were made
in northern Italy in the late 13th
century and that they were in
accepted use by the 1350s, with
Italy exporting large numbers of
eye glasses to the Middle and
Far East. The lenses were
manufactured by highly skilled
‘cristalleri’ at the famous
Venetian island’s Murano
glassworks, to exacting criteria.
One of the earliest (if not the
earliest) artworks showing
people wearing spectacles and
using lenses is a series of
frescoes by the Italian artist
Tommaso da Modena,
completed in 1352 at the Basilica
san Nicolo in Treviso. They show
Cardinal Hugh, or Hugo, of
Provence wearing a pair to read
with, and Cardinal Nicholas of
Rouen attempting to decipher
a text using a monocular lens
on a handle. It is no coincidence
that the order from which these
cardinals came, the Dominicans,
were known as the ‘carriers of
the sciences’.
During this time, spectacles
would not have had arms or
earpieces but would have been
made up of two magnifying
lenses attached to a metal fame
or holder that could be riveted
to grip the nose (also known as
pince nez or rivet spectacles).
The spectacles would have acted
like reading glasses, with convex
lenses to correct long-sightedness
only (hyperopia and
age-related presbyopia).
In 1604, the well-known scientist
and astronomer Johannes Kepler
explained how convex and
concave lenses could correct
both long and short-sightedness
(myopia) and, in 1629, The
Worshipful Company of
Spectacle Makers was formed
in England. Their slogan was ‘a
blessing to the aged’.
Although rigid rod side arms
for spectacles were dreamt up
as early as the beginning of the
1700s (possibly by the London
optician Edward Scarlett), the
innovation didn’t catch on
initially, with people favouring
the use of lorgnettes and scissor
glasses until the late 18th
century, even after optician
James Ayscough improved on
them by adding folding hinges.
Lorgnettes
Scissor Glasses
It is polymath and US founding
father Benjamin Franklin who
is often credited with having
invented bifocals (the forerunner
to today’s varifocals) to correct
both short and long-sightedness
in the same pair of spectacles.
They were invented at some
point during the mid to late
1700s and this belief is based
on a letter Franklin wrote to his
friend George Whatley, where
he states that he is ‘happy in the
invention of double spectacles,
which serving for distant objects
as well as near ones, make my
eyes are useful to me as ever
they were.’ Although Franklin
does not actually say he invented
them himself, his reputation as a
scientist and inventor meant that
many took it to mean he did. But
another theory is that he bought
them on a visit to England and
the true inventor remains
anonymous. The debate will
probably never be completely
settled.
The first glasses for correcting
astigmatism (where the eye
is rugby ball shaped causing a
blurred ‘double’ image) were
invented in 1825 by a British
astronomer named George Airy.
By 1850, modern ‘temple’ glasses
(with arms and a ‘temple’ that
fits over the ears) were in use,
and frame designs continued to
evolve for comfort and
practicality.
In the early 19th century, under
the direction of optical
scientist Moritz von Rohr, the
lens manufacturer Zeiss came to
dominate the spectacle lens field
with their spherical point-focus
lens known as Punktal®, and for
the first time the wearer could
see clearly through the whole of
the lens, not just the centre of it.
Zeiss was also able to move away
from the limitations of what had
previously been the only lens
available – the round optical lens
– to create spectacles in more
ergonomic shapes that better
fitted the wearer.
The 20th century saw a huge
surge forward in spectacle
technology with the introduction
of polarisation, plastic frames,
lightweight and photochromic
lenses, specialist eyewear and, of
course, contact lenses.
The 1950s brought us the NHS
and its now legendary NHS specs
to the masses. Their iconic range
of frames, typically either round
wire ones or solid black plastic,
is now seen as the ultimate
retro chic.
Quirky Britain
Barmy about
the British
Bulldog
With some puppies costing as
much as £2,500, an English Bulldog
Fan Club on Facebook with 154,000
followers and merchandise that
includes t-shirts, fridge magnets,
cushions and Christmas cards, it’s
clear that we Brits are more than a
little barmy about our bulldogs.
So what’s the reason for this
enduring love affair? Over the past
two hundred years our perception
of this popular breed has gradually
changed, as its image has
transformed from feisty fighting
dog to everyone’s favourite family
pet.
What’s so brilliant about a
bulldog?
While they are no longer the fierce
fighters of history, after careful
selective breeding today’s bulldogs
have managed to hold on to
certain characteristics that make
them stand out from the pack.
Today’s bulldogs are calm, easygoing
and affectionate and their
protective instincts make them
good guard dogs. Loyalty is also
a strong feature of the bulldog’s
personality and they bond strongly
with their adoptive ‘families’. Once
that bond is created, it lasts for life.
But bulldogs can also be stubborn:
if yours decides it wants to stay
put, very little – short of lifting
and moving its substantial, 40-50
pound body – will do.
Bulldog beginnings
Nowadays, as we laugh at funny
Facebook posts of bulldogs in hats,
or bulldogs splayed on couches,
legs outstretched in an oddly
human pose, it’s hard to grasp that
the ancestors of this well-loved
family pet were bred to excel in
vicious blood sports.
With its stocky, muscular body
shape and vice-like jaw, the bulldog
breed was deemed perfect for
the violent sport of bull-baiting, in
particular the practice of ‘pinning
the bull’, where specially trained
dogs were taught to bite and hold
on to the captive animal’s snout.
Bulldogs were especially bred for
this bloodthirsty pastime, which
was finally banned by the Cruelty
to Animals Act of 1835.
Although most of us would
probably associate the expression
‘British bulldog spirit’ with the
Second World War, the saying
actually dates from the 18th
century. The Old English Bulldog
(the breed originally used for
bull-baiting) is now more or less
extinct, but back in the day this
animal’s strength, tenacity and
fearlessness were qualities that
brought it to the nation’s
attention. Bulldogs particularly
appealed to the political
cartoonists of the Georgian era,
who wanted to beef up their
satirical drawings with a more
robust embodiment of the British
character. At this time the British
spirit was traditionally shown in
the form of the armed and
helmeted classical figure of
Britannia, guarded by a lion, but
it seems that cartoonists became
bored with this traditional image
and added a rough, tough fighting
bulldog as an alternative
companion for Britannia.
Throughout the 19th century the
phrase ‘British bulldog spirit’ – as a
watchword for unrelenting
courage and bravery – was embedded
in the public’s consciousness,
and when the First World War
broke out in the early 20th century,
images of plucky bulldogs
accompanied by slogans such as
“They can’t muzzle me!” became
a staple of wartime propaganda
posters.
It was a strange co-incidence that
the man at the forefront of British
politics during the Second World
War (as the country faced the very
real possibility of a Nazi invasion)
40 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!
by Kate McLelland
not only bore a striking physical
resemblance to a bulldog but also
displayed all the characteristics of
that courageous and stubborn
animal. In fact, the similarity
between the British Bulldog and
the British Prime Minister was
considered so strong that wartime
propagandists even published a
famous poster, entitled ‘Holding
the Line’, showing Winston
Churchill’s head superimposed
onto a bulldog’s body.
Brexit bulldogs
During the final decades of the
20th century the bulldog breed
fell out of fashion, but in 1994 a
string of popular TV ads featuring
Churchill (aka ‘Churchie’) – a
nodding-head car mascot with a
cheerful “Ooooh yes!”/”Oooh no!”
catchphrase – helped the bulldog
reclaim its place in the nation’s
hearts. And it was, perhaps,
inevitable that as soon as the
referendum vote was cast back
in June 2016, the British Bulldog
would be summoned out of its
kennel to do battle once more,
with pundits from both sides using
the image to support their
arguments.
The last word
According to a survey conducted
in 2017 and 2018, one in four of
us owns a dog, but despite the
enduring popularity of the English
Bulldog breed, it seems that it has
only managed to reach number six
in the nation’s poll of most popular
dogs, while –Sacre Bleu! – the
French Bulldog has recently been
tipped to replace the Labrador as
Britain’s best-loved canine pet. As
our withdrawal from the EU draws
ever closer, could we be preparing
to swap our 250-year-old icon of
British identity for something a
little more … um … European in
style? We can guess what Churchie
would say: “Ooooh no!”

A quick and easy roast for
midweek or Sunday lunch
with hardly any washing up!
Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/
gas mark 6. Place the butter in a bowl
and beat in the garlic, mixed herbs and
the zest and 1 tbsp juice from one of the
lemons. Season with salt and freshly
ground black pepper.
Ingredients
• 50g butter, softened
• 2 garlic cloves,
crushed
• 3 tbsp fresh chopped
mixed herbs (see Tip)
• 2 lemons
• Salt and freshly
ground black pepper
• 8 chicken thigh
portions
• 500g baby potatoes,
halved
• 2 tbsp virgin olive oil
• 4 sprigs fresh
rosemary, broken
into small sprigs
TIP
Ease the skin away from the chicken
thigh portions and gently push about 1
tsp of the herb and garlic butter under
the skin of each portion then smooth
the skin back down. Place all the chicken
portions in a large roasting tin.
Toss the potatoes in half the olive oil
and season. Scatter around the chicken
along with the rosemary sprigs. Cut the
second lemon into thin wedges and
nestle them in between then chicken
and potatoes. Drizzle over the rest of
the olive oil.
Roast in the pre-heated oven for 55
minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes until the
chicken is golden and cooked though
and the potatoes are crisp and tender,
turning the potatoes and basting the
chicken with the pan juices once or
twice. Serve from the roasting tin with
steamed green vegetables, if liked.
You can use any combination of mixed
herbs for the garlic and herb butter
– thyme, parsley and oregano all go
particularly well with chicken. Or just
choose one strongly flavoured herb such
as tarragon.
Life Begins
R-E-S-P-E-C-T … is it too much to ask? By Kate McLelland
“All I’m askin’ for is a little
respect.” The words of Aretha
Franklin’s song, first released in
1967, may be about a cheating
boyfriend, but so powerful is
the emotion behind the music
that these days it has become
something of an anthem for
individuals and groups who feel
disrespected by society. If you
were young at the time when
Aretha’s single reached No. 1 in the
charts, and are now in your sixties
or seventies, you may find yourself
wondering where the respect for
old age has gone.
Once upon a time, according to
Pulitzer-prize winning author
Jared Diamond, respecting your
elders and betters was a matter of
survival. During his life-long study
of traditional societies and their
attitudes towards older people,
Diamond – an award-winning
professor from ULCA in America –
has observed that elders who are
no longer able to contribute fully
to community life still command
respect because of their ability
to recall information that is
important to the tribe.
“Older people in traditional
societies have a huge significance
that would never occur to us in
our modern, literate societies,”
Diamond has claimed. “In
traditional societies without
writing, older people are the
repositories of information. It’s
their knowledge that spells the
difference between survival and
death for their whole society.”
That information might include
anything from advice on how to
survive an earthquake, find water
in a drought or cure an unusual
medical condition.
Since the prehistoric times this
remembered knowledge has
been crucial to human progress,
so perhaps it’s no wonder
that the elders who were the
gatekeepers of such wisdom
were granted high status and
respect. Nowadays – in an age of
information overload – it seems
that older voices are neither
heeded nor needed. Sadly, at a
time when healthcare advances
are helping people to live longer
and the world has more wise and
experienced senior citizens than
ever before, older people are
having to fight for the respect
they believe is their due.
Highly industrialised Western
societies are often identified
as the worst offenders when it
comes to disrespecting old age,
but many of the world’s cultures
continue to revere and respect
their older citizens. In China an
“Elderly Rights Law” dictates
the way older people should
be treated, while in East Asia
respect for the elderly, fathers
and ancestors is deeply rooted in
society.
In African and Mediterranean
countries family culture has also
remained strong, but in other
parts of the world there are signs
of change. Harish Mamgain, who
runs a charity in New Delhi, says:
“We should love (our elders) as
dignified and proud travellers. I’m
from India and most of us shower
all reverence on our elders, but
modernity has marred this spirit
here, too.”
According to the Oxford
Dictionaries, respect is “A
feeling of deep admiration for
someone or something elicited
by their abilities, qualities, or
achievements”. But if older
people have lost their status as
advisors, mentors and guardians
of our communal knowledge,
can they demand respect on the
grounds of age and experience
56 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!
alone? Twenty-something Lifestyle
blogger Michael Tawiah expresses
the views of many young people
today when he says: “Respect
should be a choice and not a
forced thing ... personally, I’m not
going to respect someone just
because they tell me to. We should
all appreciate and be accepting
and understanding of each other.”
Angie Jardine, a commentator on
the website Soapboxie.com, says
“Modern life has changed out
of all recognition in a very short
time and the memories of my
1950s childhood, for instance, are
now a history of another way of
life; a life that may seem almost
unbelievable to the technologyladen
youth of today.” However,
Angie believes that young people
can still benefit from listening
to the stories of parents and
grandparents: “Would we have
learnt anything about how a
civilised society should be run if
the survivors of two world wars
and, in particular the Holocaust,
had not told their stories to
someone who listened? There is
usually some tantalising nugget of
information in the reminiscences
of old folk from which something
can be learned about the past and
where we came from.”
Today it’s not just warm words of
wisdom that older people bring
to the table. In 2010 the charity
WRVS estimated that over-65s
contributed over £40bn to the UK
economy through taxes, spending
power, volunteering and caring,
and this figure is predicted to
reach £77bn by 2030. 40,000 of
WRVS’ own volunteers are over
sixty-five years old, serving people
in different ways, from offering
trips to hospital to arranging social
activities.
So maybe, if we’re looking for
respect, we simply need to be
more proactive in flagging up the
good things that our caring and
committed older citizens already
contribute to society.

Motoring
By James Baggott
The most rugged cars you can buy
A Ford Fiesta is perfect for
bustling city traffic, while a BMW
5 Series is ideal for motorway
mile-munching. But whack
either of them into a challenging
situation and they soon become
unstuck – they simply aren’t
rugged.
These cars are, though. We’ve
rounded up nine of the most
hard-wearing and brawny cars
you can buy today, ideal for
surviving a nuclear war – or the
muddy car boot sale in Sandford,
Gloucestershire.
JEEP WRANGLER
The latest Jeep Wrangler is set to
come to the UK after debuting
in America. It’s more refined,
luxurious and car-like than ever,
but still retains the DNA of the
original Willys Jeep – one of the
most iconic off-roaders of all time.
Solid axles ensure simplicity
and this enables Wranglers to
be modified for just about any
purpose. Whether you want to
traverse sand dunes, go mudplugging
in a deep forest or
simply park on the kerb without
scraping your alloys, the Wrangler
is about as tough as they come.
MERCEDES-BENZ G-CLASS
Originally known as the G-Wagen,
this military-spec beast has
morphed into the ideal transport
for those who want to be seen.
With glitzy chrome atop the
blocky body, and the option of
insane AMG-tuned engines, it’s
often seen in London’s most
glamorous districts.
But the G-Class isn’t just all show
and no go. It’s one of the most
serious off-roaders you can
buy today, thanks to a supersophisticated
4WD system plus
three locking differentials. Opt
for chunky tyres rather than shiny
alloys and the G-Class is near
unstoppable.
TOYOTA LAND CRUISER
The Land Cruiser is a true legend
– it’s the vehicle that pushed
Land Rover out of Australia,
and showed the world that not
only could the Japanese build
off-roaders, they could build offroaders
that never broke down.
Though the Land Cruiser
isn’t as luxurious as a Range
Rover, treat it properly and it’ll
probably outlast you. There’s no
compromise to be made off-road
either.
ISUZU D-MAX AT35 ARCTIC
TRUCKS
Isuzu’s D-Max pickup is already
a pretty rugged vehicle, with a
beefy diesel engine and fourwheel
drive. The specialists at
Arctic Trucks, however, have
turned it into something rather
spectacular.
With enormous tyres and
widened arches, the car’s stance
is far more purposeful, and
custom Fox suspension offers it
enough travel to deal with terrain
that would trouble a mountain
goat.
TOYOTA PRIUS
This may be an odd inclusion,
as the Toyota Prius isn’t exactly
known for its go-anywhere ability.
In fact, it’s far more likely to be
60 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!

seen as a taxi on the streets of
London rather than blasting
through sand dunes. But it’s there
where the ruggedness lies.
Nobody expected the Prius to be
as reliable as it is – but even daily
abuse as Uber cabs can’t break
them. Many of these cars have
over 500,000 miles on the clock
and are still going strong on their
original battery packs.
ARIEL NOMAD
Most off-roaders are designed
to traverse rough terrain at
about 5mph. The Ariel Nomad is
designed to do it at 50.
With an engine and body
pinched from the Atom road
car, the rear-wheel-drive Nomad
bounces across the terrain rather
than ploughing through it. It’s
hardcore, totally open to the
elements and buckets of fun.
SUBARU FORESTER
Subaru has a reputation for
producing reliable, rugged
cars, and the Forester is no
exception. The darling of farmers
everywhere, Subaru owners tend
to keep their cars for longer than
any other – because they can’t
bear to part with them.
The brand’s symmetrical allwheel-drive
system is legendary
for its simplicity and reliability,
while boxer engines lower the
centre of gravity and make for a
reassuring drive.
TOYOTA HILUX
Our third Toyota on this list is
perhaps the most legendary –
the Hilux, notably the ‘unkillable
car’. Made famous by BBC’s Top
Gear, a Hilux survived being left
at sea, falling off a building, being
crashed into a tree and crushed
with a wrecking ball – and still
started up at the end.
Today’s Hilux is rather plusher
than the 1994 model that Top
Gear used, but it still
retains a well-earned
reputation for serious
reliability.
From Distant Shores
It’s good to know yourself. To have a sense
of your strengths and weaknesses. It helps in
the navigation of life. As each year passes I
learn new things about the way I think, and
the things that are important to me. I also
learn that many of the things I thought I
knew about myself are less accurate than I’d
like to imagine!
A case in point: If I were to list my more
positive attributes I would like to think that
hospitality would rank highly. I have always
enjoyed meeting people and opening my
home. Therefore when a friend of a friend
from the USA contacted me to ask to stay for
a week whilst they carried out some research
for their PhD in London I was happy to
accommodate. The fact that I was
entertaining a stranger, unknown to me,
seemed of little consequence at the time.
Upon introduction I have never before been
asked ‘in what I am studied’ and I can only
describe the last week as somewhat surreal. I
have found the veneer of my hospitality
cracking particularly at the early and loud
starts to the day which seem to involve a
significant amount of stomping, crashing and
banging. My bathroom, usually a calm and
orderly space is now festooned with loofahs,
brushes, bottles, bags and other
paraphernalia. Yes, whatever virtue is found
in my hospitality is apparently now matched
by grouchiness at the disruption to my home
and routine!
Actually the chap is very genuine and it has
been interesting getting to know him –
though we are about as far apart in
disposition as one can imagine. He is highly
academic and slowly considered whilst I am
pragmatic and active; which leads to
conversations with lengthy pauses that he
seems wholly at ease with and I find
excruciating.
If nothing else, the experience has reminded
me that there is still a lot that I don’t know
about myself. In moments like this I am
relieved to know that God knows me better
than I know myself and yet chooses to love
me. I read in the Psalms in the Bible “You
have searched me, Lord, and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise; you
perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern
my going out and my lying down; you are
familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on
my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before, and you lay
your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too
wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.”
I believe that God is able to shine light on my
life to help me love more deeply, care more
genuinely and live with greater integrity.
I would hope that my guest will have felt
welcomed, and next time (!) I probably need
to realise that being kind is sometimes a little
costly!
If you want to know how you ‘tick’ I would
encourage you get to know the God who
made you – and if you can access Psalm 139
I’d encourage you to read it in full as it is
beautiful and profound.
THE
CHIPSTEAD
PLAYERS
PRESENT:
Directed by Will Harris.
Daniel Corban is a very
worried man – he and his
newly-married wife have
come to a French alpine
chalet for a short stay, but
she has disappeared.
The police cannot trace her – but then he is presented with
another woman who insists that she is his wife, and so do
other people. Daniel is naturally outraged, and the police
are disbelieving of his protestations.
So - is this a conspiracy? Is Daniel going mad?
Everything comes clear in the final climax!
September’s topical debate, ‘Whoever its
President, the USA will always be Europe’s
strongest ally’. saw excellent maiden speeches
by the Society’s two new members – starting
with proposer Suhan Srinivasan. An ally, he said,
is a state formally co-operating with another
for military or other purpose – as with Europe
and the USA. The basis of that alliance is much
stronger than any President. 1. Security and
defence: After 70 years of peace in Europe,
we nonetheless still need robust defences
and collaboration with America to discourage
threats from Russia, China, nuclear weapons’
development and terrorism, including cybercrime.
The USA, with its huge nuclear arsenal,
leads the world’s strongest military powers;
in Europe, only Italy, France and the UK make
the top ten. EU states’ membership of NATO
provides reassuring support in the event of an
attack, but without the USA and NATO backing,
what would deter the imposing might of Russia
and China? We need the USA. 2. Economy and
trade: Europe’s consumers(511.5 million) exceed
those in the States (327.5 million). Together,
this economic partnership is the single most
important factor in global economic growth and
prosperity, sustaining almost 15 million jobs in
the EU and USA. 3. Culture and values: While its
individual states are quite diverse, the EU has a
great deal in common with its transatlantic ally.
There is common commitment to the rule of law,
democracy, free enterprise, human rights,
tackling poverty, overseas charity (providing 80%
of official development aid), promoting peace
and environmental protection. France and the
UK are both members of the UN Security
Council, supporting the USA both with and
against China and Russia. 4. The future: When
the USA’s military and economic supremacy
eventually ends, who will stand against the
might of China? Together, the EU and the USA
reinforce each other. 5. Mutual benefit: While
the EU leans on America for security, the USA
needs EU trade. There can be no doubt, said
Suhan, that the USA is the EU’s strongest ally,
with its powerful army, extensive intelligence
service and proven support over two world wars.
Of course, there will be differences, but our ties
are strengthened by much more than NATO.
6. The President: While President Trump may
strain EU/American relationships, he cannot
ignore the risk that if Europe falls, could the USA
stand alone? The EU and the USA have a strong
alliance, which will last for generations and no
other friendship will come close.
Opposer Malcolm Swadling opened by saying
that the USA, like all countries, will always put
itself first – whoever the President! He quoted
Victorian statesman Lord Palmerston – ‘There
are no permanent friends or permanent enemies
– just permanent interests’. Arguably, Western
Europe owes the survival of its post-war
democracies to President Harry Truman’s (and
his successors’) determined stance against
Soviet Russia’s geopolitical expansion. But the
USA did not counter Stalin’s post-war
colonisation of Eastern Europe, and regretted its
WW2 Potsdam/Yalta agreements only when the
Soviets became a direct challenge to the USA. In
World War I, the sinking of the Lusitania and the
proposed anti-American Mexican/German
alliance prompted USA intervention, not the
plight of France, Belgium and the UK; in WW2,
the Pearl Harbour attack and the proposed
German/Japan alliance moved them to act, not
humanitarian concerns. The USA has supported
its European allies against hostile Fascism or
Communism only when defending its own
interests and, in fairness, Malcolm noted, why
not? Consecutive Presidents, from Bush Senior to
Barak Obama, have failed to provide timely
practical help when Russia annexed Crimea,
during the ethnic cleansing in former
Yugoslavia, and Donald Trump promised
‘tremendous retribution’ on the EU if a trade
deal was not agreed. So, the USA is hardly our
strongest ally. Furthermore, the EU countries
may be comparatively rich, but EU growth rates
(0.7% 10-year average) are well below those of
Sub-Saharan Africa (4.7%), the Middle East (3.5%)
and Latin America (2.2%). The USA’s economic
interests must surely lie with vibrant
developing countries, and indeed, America is
more and more looking across the Pacific;
Donald Trump’s foreign policy is focusing on
defence in Korea, and trade in the Pacific rim.
The EU must nurture the USA as a strong ally.
Although we have many shared interests,
America does not want to be our bodyguard, so
we need to spend more on defence (2% of GDP
as a NATO requirement) and we need to develop
and maintain a robust economy. Strength draws
strength – a prosperous, well-armed EU is not
an easy target for Putin’s Russia, but is a useful
ally for the USA and one that even Donald Trump
may admire.
The motion was won by 5 votes to 3, with 2
abstentions. The next debate, ‘The pen is
mightier than the sword’, will take place on
November 5th. at 7.30 p.m. in the Old Coulsdon
Centre, when Suhan Srinivasan will once more
propose and will be opposed by
Richard Ackland.
Technology
AVOID TECH HORRORS
THIS HALLOWE’EN
What to do with a watery phone and how to protect your photos…
Not everything that goes bump in the night is a
ghost or a ghoul. Sometimes it’s a crucial bit of
kit getting damaged. Unfortunately no piece of
technology lasts forever, any device can be stolen
or damaged and any digital file can be deleted
or corrupted. If it contains something that really
matters to you – your priceless family photos
or home videos, perhaps, or your university
dissertation, or the book that’s going to make
you a superstar – then any problems could be
catastrophic.
So how do you prevent problems from becoming
Halloween horrors?
The first thing to do is to ensure that you have
more than one copy of anything important. For
example, if you store all your photos on your
phone you should make sure you have copies of
all of them on your PC too: if your phone was to
be stolen and you didn’t have backups of your
photos, they’d be gone forever. You can also use
online services such as Apple’s iCloud or Google
Photos to store your snaps on Apple or Google’s
computers. Other services from the likes of Flickr
and DropBox can do the same. That means if you
lose your phone or PC, you can still download the
photos to a different phone or PC later. Those
services aren’t just limited to photos, either. You
can use them to store and share documents of
any kind.
A really good way to have backups is to get an
external hard disk. If you have a recent PC or Mac
you have USB 3.0 ports, which are much faster
than the USB 2.0 ports in older computers.
That means you can take advantage of superspeedy
USB 3.0 drives. You don’t need to spend
much to get a good one: for example, Toshiba’s
Canvio Basics is currently £44.99 for 1TB of space,
more than enough for even the biggest photo
library. Even a massive drive such as the 4TB WD
My Passport is less than £100.
There are other ways to copy files, such as USB
sticks and DVD discs (if your computer has a DVD
burner), but we wouldn’t recommend them.
USB sticks aren’t really made to last and they’re
easy to lose, while DVD discs take ages to burn,
don’t have much storage capacity and aren’t
particularly well-suited to long term storage.
So far we’ve talked about prevention. What
about cure? One of the most common computer,
tablet or phone disasters is a liquid spill. If that
happens to you, turn the device off immediately
and if it’s a laptop, turn it upside down so the
keyboard is facing down. Whatever you do, don’t
turn it back on until you’re sure it’s completely
dry inside. If it isn’t, you could cause a shortcircuit
that’ll ruin the computer.
Have you heard the one about putting a phone in
a sealed bag of rice? That works, because the rice
draws out the moisture – but it takes at least two
days to work. As with laptops, keep the phone off
until it’s completely dry.
Bunty’s Kitchen
Mobile Catering for Parties & E
After getting married last year then a few
weeks later losing my father to Multiple
Myeloma we then discovered that my new
husband had testicular cancer. It was one of
the hardest years of my life. I have been a
Nanny for 20 years and was made redundant
earlier this summer, so I decided this was now
the chance to turn my dream into a reality.
I have always loved food & cooking but most
of all feeding people! You could say I am the
ultimate feeder! I found “Marian” the
Airstream on eBay and a week later she was
on the drive. My husband thought I was totally
mad! Before I knew it, he and some very
good friends transformed her into a
mobile kitchen to get her ready for her
maiden voyage.
It was a on the off chance that I was given the
opportunity to take the Airstream to Grange
Park, Old Coulsdon. It has been received so
positively by all that have visited me there.
It has given me
the chance to
get to know the
community and
make lots of
new friends not
to mention feed
them all cakes!
I have now started retraining as a chef and
also a Patisserie Chef at South Thames college
in Morden. My life has changed so much in the
last few years; without my family and friends I
wouldn’t be achieving my dreams. They have
made it all possible and I will be forever in
their debt.
I will be in Grange Park from Thurs – Sat 10am-
the weather will allow. Bunty’s Kitchen is also
available to hire for weddings, parties and
Bird’s Eye View- October 2018
By John Birkett, RSPB Croydon Local Group
Daylight hours are rapidly getting shorter, but
this means that you do not have to get up so
early to see in the dawn. This is a bonus as
that could be the best part of the day to see
birds migrating over Croydon. If you do get
out early one morning this month you could
catch up with flocks of birds arriving from
northern Europe.
In the first hour or so of daylight redwings and
fieldfares could be around in good numbers:
I have seen flocks of dozens of these winter
thrushes, with around 1,000 passing through
one October morning. Keep looking upwards
and use your ears as well as your eyes.
It is also worth checking open spaces in case
birds have been grounded overnight and with
a bit of luck you may find that diminutive
jewel of a firecrest flitting around. Good luck
If you see anything interesting you can add
it to the Croydon Birders website, which
contains information about recent sightings
in Croydon: www/croydon-birders.wikia.com/
wiki/Latest_News or you could contact me by
email on johnbirkett@hotmail.co.uk
Better still, come along to one of our
meetings and tell us directly.
Details of the meetings are on our website:
www.rspb.org.uk/groups/croydon
Many other small birds will be on the move
and most autumns I hear skylarks heading
over and occasionally something scarcer like
a brambling. Later in the month there could
be dozens, hundreds or even thousands of
woodpigeons on the move. There is also the
chance of coming across a Short-eared Owl
passing over or quartering the downs.
A postcard of Malcolm Road, Coulsdon in the 1920s shows the attractive terrace cottages leading
down to what is today's Waitrose carpark. The buildings of the Council School (later Smitham School)
are on the right. The house nearest to the camera was Sunnycot or No. 52 Malcolm Road.
Compute or not to Compute?
“Pilate said to Him, ‘What is truth?’”…
“‘…Everyone who is of the truth hears My
voice.’” John 18:38, 37 (NKJV UK)
Computers are wonderful aids in our world, except
when they are stupid and unhelpful (which is bad
enough), or fall in the hands of the wicked.
You see, out there is all the wisdom and knowledge
collected down the centuries, and that is being
added to minute by minute. Recently I was looking
for a book from the 17th century to download and
read. Nothing. Months on I decided to have another
go, and this time there it was, all four volumes of
it, complete and unabridged. And free for me to
download and keep for as long as I wanted. For me,
that’s what the worldwide web is intended for.
But then with all that information comes a darker
side. There are vast areas devoted to pornography
and other unsavoury activities. And at times you’re
as likely to stumble across something you’d rather
not see or know about in searching for other
helpful material. And yes, I know there’s lots of
religious material on-line too. Including Bible versions
otherwise not available, as well as messages
in video and audio. Even this website is only
available because of the worldwide web.
Unfortunately, the tendency in our modern society
is to watch and listen rather than to read.
And let’s face it, not everything is truth out there,
religiously speaking. As with everything involving
human beings there’s a mixture of truth and error.
And our wont is to take or seek short cuts. We’d
rather listen or watch someone talk about the Bible,
than to read it for ourselves. Listen! Nothing!
And I mean nothing, substitutes for reading and
studying God’s word for yourself. It’s God talking
directly to you. Not through a third party, or via
some well-intentioned but human interface who or
which often gets in the way of God and his simple
message directed to you.
One thing that might be helpful on the web is ‘read
the Bible in a year’ sites, where all scripture is
broken down into digestible chunks. I’d actually
recommend reading the Bible over three years;
one year is a bit much, especially for those less well
acquainted with its books. Some areas are well
known, such as the stories of David and Goliath,
Noah and the Flood; but other areas are more
dense in the message they carry, and seem to be
unimportant to us today (the tribal lists in
Chronicles, for example). But give yourself a
chance. Be different. Be someone who has read the
Bible—all of it. On computer or in a book. You’ll be
among a minority, even of Christians, who have,
and it’ll be a start.
Prayer: Most Almighty Father, we know you have
a personal plan for every human being you have
created. Our prayer to you is on behalf of all those
who to date are unaware of you or of your great
love for them. A plan which, ultimately, requires
that at some point they will become familiar with
your Word, and its saving message for them
personally. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
