LIFE AFTER THE SIREN

Many Australians look to 

sportspeople as role 

models and nowhere is this 

most evident than on the footy 

oval. 

As children, we look to the 

bigger, taller, faster footballers 

who gun their way through the 

game and hope we can be just 

like them when we grow up. 

Eventually our heroes retire 

and the phrase ‘out with the 

old, in with the new’ becomes 

all too relevant. We move on 

to following other players 

while our former idols return 

to normal life. 

But how does life change 

once the three-times-a-week 

training, one-day-a-week 

playing and early morning 

rehab sessions end? 

STAYING ON THE SIDELINES 

There are many players who 

decide to explore career 

opportunities within the 

football world after they hang 

up the boots. 

Ex-players such as 

Norwood’s Glen Rosser

general manager), North 

Adelaide Magarey Medallist 

Brenton Phillips (U18s State 

coach and SANFL Talent 

Manager), Panthers’ Darren 

Trevena (Power development 

coach) and more recently, 

South’s Clay Sampson 

(Panthers League coach) have 

all chosen to continue their 

career in football. 

Also among this group is 

Leon ‘Mopsy’ Grosser, an 

ex-West Adelaide 1983 

premiership player, who was 

an astounding SANFL 

footballer and the idol of 

many supporters. 

“The aches and pains were 

persisting longer as I got 

older,” he said. 

“I also had a young family 

and the increasing time spent 

at the football club impacted 

on my private life.” 

Grosser continued his 

contribution to the football 

world after his retirement in 

1993 after 15 years of playing 

League footy, serving seven 

years as an assistant coach 

and Reserves coach at Westies. 

Today his involvement with 

the SANFL is minimal and 

instead, he contributes at 

grassroots level, supporting 

his son’s footy dream and 

coaching the First 18 team at 

Immanuel College. 

“I do miss the mateship,” he 

conceded of his playing days. 

“Also (I miss the feeling of) 

achieving success as a group. 

I still see many former West 

Adelaide players and staff and 

enjoy recalling times gone 

past.” 

Grosser now focuses on 

work with the South Australian 

Metropolitan Fire Services and 

his new hobby, golf. 

STOP THE PRESSES 

There are, of course, some 

players who retire and decide 

to stay involved in the game 

outside the realm of the 

clubrooms. 

They become the 

commentators we hear over 

the airwaves, the sports

reporters we see at the end of 

a news report, the bylines we 

see at the back of the 

newspaper. 

Glenelg great Graham 

Cornes has been involved 

with Radio FIVEaa for years 

and also features as a 

columnist for the Sunday Mail. 

Other former SANFL players 

of varying grades to make the 

jump into sports journalism 

include Mark Soderstrom, Ben 

Hook, Stephen Rowe, Andrew 

Montesi, Bruce Abernethy, 

Grant Coffee, Troy Gray, Corey 

Wingard and Kym Dillon. 

Even one of the state’s bestloved 

radio voices, KG 

Cunningham, was a wellknown 

SANFL umpire. 

END OF THE ROAD 

Some players decide their 

last League match is the end 

of their football career and 

that once they come to the 

fork in the road, they choose 

the path that leads outside of 

football. 

Many League players, some 

with very impressive playing 

records, have branched out 

into other fields where they 

have made a name for 

themselves. 

Many footballers are now 

involved in the South 

Australian radio industry, such 

as Port’s George Fiacchi (Mix 

102.3) and Norwood’s Keith 

Thomas (DMG Radio). Others, 

such as the Eagles’ Matthew 

Kluzek and Port’s Peter Woite 

have pursued careers in the 

police force. Former Crow and 

Bays player Matthew Liptak is 

a qualified doctor. 

These retired players 

sometimes choose to stay on 

as a committee board member 

(as in the case of Thomas) 

where as others choose to 

leave their football life behind 

and take a new direction as a 

priority. 

More recently, SANFL 

supporters have seen Gavin 

Colville, captain and player of

Woodville West Torrens, retire 

to take on the life of dad and 

continue his career as a 

lecturer at the University of 

South Australia. 

Colville retired after 14 

seasons in the SANFL as a 

player in 2008. 

With the birth of his 

daughter, retirement couldn’t 

have come at a better time. 

“I could no longer give the 

physical and mental 

commitment required,” Colville 

said. 

“Or more simply put, I got 

slow.” 

But where Grosser chose to 

stay with the club for several 

years following retirement, 

Colville has decided to give 

himself a break from the 

SANFL and is now involved 

with Henley Football Club 

both as a player and assistant 

coach. 

“I still wanted to play so it 

wouldn’t be possible to be 

involved in both (a local club 

and the SANFL),” he said. 

“Also after that amount of 

time at one club, it was nice to 

be in a new environment and 

meet new people.” 

Colville said the best part of 

retirement was being able to 

train on his own terms and 

being able to eat dinner at 

normal times. 

“Remaining involved at 

another level has allowed me 

to still enjoy many of the good 

things about the game.” 

Colville conceded he had no 

regrets about giving up 

League footy despite 

experiencing possibly the 

most disappointing moment in 

a player’s career - missing out 

on a premiership due to injury. 

“There were definitely a few 

regrettable Grand Finals along 

the way as well, but I am 

satisfied that I gave my best.”

200 GAMES FOR MR DURABILITY

Port Adelaide skipper Corey 

Ah Chee will celebrate a 

memorable career when he 

plays his 200th SANFL game 

today. 

Tough, durable and 

uncompromising, Ah Chee 

epitomises the approach of 

all great Magpie captains. 

Since debuting in 2000, 

Ah Chee has only missed four 

games of football, a tribute to 

his attitude and commitment 

to the Magpie cause. 

Port’s first indigenous 

captain began his journey to 

Alberton in Darwin. 

“I originally played my first 

senior football with the 

Darwin Buffaloes in the 

Northern Territory Football 

League, playing about 40 

senior games before coming 

down to Adelaide,” he said. 

Along his SANFL journey 

Ah Chee has had four senior 

coaches - Stephen Williams, 

Matthew Knights, 10 time 

premiership coach John 

Cahill and current club 

mentor Tim Ginever. 

“Stephen was a straight 

shooter and you knew exactly 

where you stood, while Matty 

was along the same lines,” 

Ah Chee said. 

“Jack was very encouraging 

and passionate, while I find 

Timmy having many of the 

same characteristics as the 

man he succeeded.” 

Reflecting on his captain’s 

CICOLELLA SET FOR 200 GAMES

As a teenager growing up 

in the country, Justin 

Cicolella was determined to 

carve out a career in football. 

Today, the drive and 

ambition of those formative 

years will culminate in 200 

SANFL games. 

A fisherman by trade, 

Cicolella moved to Adelaide 

as a 16-year-old to have a

achievement, Ginever gave 

Ah Chee the ultimate 

compliment. 

“He is good enough to have 

played in defence in any of 

the seven premierships I 

played in,” Ginever said. 

“And we had some great 

defenders including Martin 

Leslie, Greg Phillips, Paul 

Northeast, Roger Delaney and 

George Fiacchi. 

“Along with his longevity and 

ability to play with injury he is 

a sensational overhead mark, 

a good kick and accurate in 

front of goal, and he rarely 

loses his feet, which is also a 

sign of a top level player.” 

Ah Chee rates his first 

League game, state 

appearances and playing 

finals football as career 

highlights. 

In typically modest fashion, 

Ah Chee’s 2003 Best and 

Fairest win wasn’t high on his 

list, citing the departure of 

Ryan O’Connor and Tony 

Brown’s broken leg as aiding 

him in gaining the Magpie’s 

top honour. 

As a key defender, Ah Chee 

has taken on the best the 

SANFL has to offer, including 

Sturt’s Brant Chambers, 

Central’s Daniel Schell and 

West’s Adam Richardson. 

“You can’t afford to have an 

off day. If these guys get five 

or six opportunities – it’ll be a 

long afternoon,” he said.

thing so I came down and 

lived with an auntie, Janette 

Benyk,” the midfielder said. 

“I actually started playing

forward and kick a couple of 

goals.”

“I always enjoyed the 

challenge of playing against 

Chris and James Gowans. 

“We are friends off the field 

and always try and catch up 

for a beer and give each other 

a punch in the ribs.” 

A country boy at heart, 

football was always in 

Cicolella’s genes. 

Younger brother Dylan played 

with the Hummocks Watchman 

Eagles in the Adelaide Plains 

competition, and his father, 

Michael, played in over 500

Eagles foundation clubs, Port 

Wakefield. 

Despite a host of accolades 

including two Eagles’ Best and 

Fairest awards, the highly 

gifted on-baller has never 

won a SANFL state jumper. 

Going through the grades 

with Robert Shirley and Rhett 

Biglands, Cicolella said they 

came into the Eagles structure 

at a good time and he looked 

up to the likes of Steven Hall, 

Gavin Colville, Nick Pesch and 

Andrew Rogers. 

Cicolella said Woodville West 

Torrens had been like a family 

to him. 

“I chose to leave the club in 

2004 (embarking on a preseason 

with Geelong in the VFL) 

and when I realised I’d made the 

wrong decision they welcomed 

me back with open arms. 

“They owe me nothing and 

I’ve always wanted to be a 

one club footballer.”

Round 15 is the second 

mystery round. This means 

votes accumulated during 

Round 15 will remain 

confidential until the final 

series in September. 

At the completion of Round 14, 

Jonathon Beech from the West 

Adelaide Football Club has 

been named the Round 15 

Coca-Cola Star Search nominee. 

Playing his seventh game for 

the season (and the eighth for 

his League career), the 18 

year old from Barmera 

showed composure and 

maturity beyond his years to 

play an integral role in West’s 

win over Central District on 

the weekend. 

North’s Rhys Archard and 

Sturt’s Tristan Gum were tied 

in first place.

Wright remained in third spot, 

while exciting Magpie Brad 

Murray was six points off the 

lead in fourth. 

Judged by members of the 

SANFL’s 200 Club on a 5-4-3- 

2-1 basis for every minor 

round match, the award 

carries with it a $3000 first 

prize.

Award recognises talented 

youngsters making their mark

Every SANFL club knows how important it is to stay in touch 

with their supporters and I have been delighted to come 

across fresh forms of communication that our clubs have been 

using to keep you - the footy fan - informed. 

This year, the clubs have put a major emphasis on online 

communication and as such, the websites are looking bigger 

and better than ever before. Some of the best places to seek out 

League news and gossip include: 

BARRIE’S CORNER: This charming nook at North Adelaide 

Football Club’s site has to be one of the best-loved features of 

this regularly-updated homepage. Penned by Robran himself, 

Barrie’s Corner features tid-bits from Prospect Oval, updates on 

past players and observations about footy and life in general. 

No need to be a Roosters fan to soak up some of Barrie’s words 

of wisdom. 

INSIDE THE NEST: Woodville-West Torrens player and budding 

journo Duane Schultz does an excellent job providing this 

regular insight into modern footy life. Fast-paced and often 

hilarious, Duane gives fans a figurative peek into the 

changerooms, detailing his teammates’ latest antics and giving 

the run-down on what’s happening at the club. 

BLUETUBE: A little (Double Blue) birdie got me hooked on this 

video series a few weeks back and now I just can’t wait for the 

next installment. BlueTube is Sturt Football Club’s YouTube 

video series of player, coach and administrator interviews. The 

videos are complemented by superb caricatures by club 

volunteer Phil Egel. 

BLOODS BACKSTAGE: Also new to the scene is West Adelaide’s 

fresh video update featuring a player of the week. Hosted by life 

member, Lee Harradine, the videos are well worth a watch. The 

latest edition is on Westies’ homepage right now! 

REDLEGS ONLINE STORE: Let’s go shopping! The Norwood 

Football Club site has its own online merchandise shop, selling 

everything from trucker’s caps and hoodies to pens and 

umbrellas. A great way to channel some cash into your favourite 

club while updating your winter wardrobe in preparation for 

chilly matchdays at Coopers Stadium. 

E-NEWS: I’m a big fan of both the Panthers and the Magpies’ 

e-bulletins sent out to members on a regular basis. Both clubs 

do a wonderful job in keeping supporters in the loop with club 

news. Older issues are available on the official websites. 

LOST AND FOUND: There are a lot of good things about the 

Central District site - player blogs, polls, that constant reminder 

along the top of the homepage of the number of recent 

premierships they’ve won. But the section that gave me the best 

chuckle was the Doggies’ unique way of reminding fans to take 

out membership. ‘Are you a stray? Maybe you moved out of the 

area, got distracted by family life or copped too many knocks to 

the head and suffered amnesia?’ the site questions. ‘Whatever 

the reason, we’d love to welcome you back into the pack.’ Full 

points to anyone who pops into the Ponderosa this week to 

blame their lapsed membership on amnesia. 

TAG A TIGER: Also in the vein of unique online membership 

drives is Glenelg’s ‘Tag A Tiger’ initiative on its official website. 

‘Tag A Tiger’ lets devoted Bays members “dob in” non-members 

so the latter can receive a friendly reminder from the club about 

the importance of financial support. Make sure you tag a Tiger 

online today. 

Next week, the SANFL will be launching a new website in 

time for the Balfours Showdown. The AAMI Stadium site - 

www.aamistadium.com.au - will be your one-stop shop for 

all events at AAMI. 

Buy AFL tickets, check out other major events at the Stadium, 

scope out opportunities to hire corporate suites or simply learn 

a bit more about South Australia’s home of footy. 

The official SANFL site will remain a hub for all things relating 

to our great State League competition.
