Haunting words from Jeremiah who, elsewhere in his honest prophecy, self identifies as the weeping prophet. His tears are for the Southern Kingdom of Judah. He feels the pain of the final days of this crumbling nation. Yet even now, they will not admit wrongdoing and change course. With the enemy right at the gates, they still want to point the finger of blame at others for the situation they are facing. This lack of self - criticism or self–questioning is staggering. But it’s a stubborn hallmark of human nature. It is such dangerous self-delusion which is evident in our text. God has not rescued them. They are at a tipping point. There is no alternative. Societies can reach that moment. Western culture may have already done so. And so can people. But there is hope. Jeremiah calls the nation to return to God. To stop the self justification and embrace a path of repentance and change. That is the glorious offer we hold out to the world. To our neighbours, friends and colleagues. And indeed to ourselves, as we look in the mirror. We need to be saved. Saved from our spiritual blindness and pride. Maybe the Harvest has not quite past in the UK, but very nearly. But as I watch the nights drawing in, the summer has certainly ended. Yet in this month of October we have a number of opportunities as a Church to offer hope to Bournemouth, to say to individuals, “it’s not too late!” Students beginning or returning to University, Internationals, office workers, shoppers, are among those who need to hear the good news. A new Alpha Course, the Lansdowne Central mission out of East Cliff with the invitation, “Try Church”, are just two of the many ways in which we can point others to the rescue God provides in His Son. A rescue we need ourselves on a daily basis. Let the hymn writer nail our greatest need. “Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to thy cross I cling!” Peter Baker | Senior Minister
Keeping the food cupboard stocked at In Touch is a constant battle, which is why the In Touch team are delighted that Lansdowne’s Harvest collection will be donated to us. In Touch provides food, friendship, comfort and clothing for those in need and is based in St Augustin’s Church hall. We are open Tuesdays and Friday, 11:45am to 1:30pm. We begin each lunch with scripture and prayer, which is heard in respectful silence. We prepare hot food for over 70 guests and endeavour to provide takeaways. Nando’s supplies our chicken, however we rely on your donations to make the meals complete and nutritious. The typical meals we serve are roast chicken, chicken pie, chicken stew, chilli chicken and chicken curry with a side of vegetables and fresh potatoes. Suggested donations include tinned goods such as: tomatoes, baked beans, sweet corn, carrots, garden peas and soup. We also require coffee, tea, sugar, biscuits, squash, and condiments. Ellen MCGINN It’s time to light up the darkness! On Friday the 26 October we will be holding our annual ‘Light Party’ (a Christian alternative to Halloween). It starts at 5.30pm and ends at 7.30pm and is for the whole family! Last year was our biggest ever with approximately 150 people attending, so this year our ambition is even bigger! We will be using the whole church and it will be decorated with fun lighting effects. For the first time there will be a disco, and show time, plus a bouncy castle, UV face painting, crafts and games! Parents/carers do need to attend and supervise their children, but we warmly invite all ages to enjoy. There will be a tea to end the event, and all children will receive a goody bag. The whole thing is absolutely free, but please register via the website (lansdownechurch.uk/ lightparty) and come brightly dressed ready to party!
