By Ross Kiddie
If retirement is looming, or if you’ve already
reached retirement age, you could well be
looking to downsize your vehicle to something
that’s suitable for two, and something with just
a little more space for when the grandchildren
are in tow.
One such vehicle would be Ford’s EcoSport.
Don’t let the name fool you, it’s not that overly
sporty, but it is a sport utility vehicle which is
compact but is practical in every sense of the
word.
Sitting on the Feista platform, the EcoSport
is short at just 4.2m, but it translates its space
into useful internals.
Mechanically, the EcoSport isn’t complicated,
it drives out the front wheels only, but it does
have technology which is finding its way across
the wider Ford production system.
Notably, under the bonnet sits a newgeneration
three-cylinder turbocharged engine.
It must be noted that when EcoSport first
landed here it had a four-cylinder 1.5-litre unit,
but a recent model upgrade now includes the
three-potter, and by my reckoning it is a real
gem.
Ford claim 92kW and 170Nm,
these outputs are available at
6000rpm for power while
the torque spread is vast,
available all the way
from 1500rpm to
4500rm. The result
is strong underfoot
feel, and a torquey
response through
the mid-range. While
the engine has the
characteristic harmonics
associated only with
three-cylinder engines, it is
still smooth, and unless you are
really tuned into what is happening
under the bonnet you wouldn’t think anything
unusual was sitting there.
The engine is coupled to a six-speed
automatic transmission. It is a conventional
gearbox with a sport setting which activates
steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. It
allows the driver to select manual changes,
and is a useful device when power needs to
be extracted, or for slowing momentum when
corners arrive, or for when stops need to be
made.
Interaction between the engine and gearbox
is fluid with a natural progression of power
between the ratios, there is just enough torque
on offer so that the gaps are filled easily.
The EcoSport is reasonably lively, it will cut
out a standstill to 100km/h time of 10.5sec,
thanks a lot to its light weight of just under
1300kg.
That also contributes to lack
of stress on the engine, it is
relaxed and comfortable
in its power supply.
That being the case it,
according to Ford, is
capable of a 6.7-litre
per 100km (42mpg)
combined cycle fuel
usage figure.
That sits well with the
readout during my time with
the test car, it was constantly
listing at 7.5l/100km (38mpg). At
100km/h a 5l/100km (55mpg) figure
is on offer with the engine not very busy at
2100rpm at that speed.
The EcoSport takes on the handling qualities
I’m very familiar with in European Fords. It
feels lithe and nimble with chassis control and
steering feel that promotes confidence.
Even though it sits high on the suspension,
there is little body movement and gravitational
change is unforced, the body is balanced
over the suspension. The spring and damper
rates are compliant so that rut and bump
absorption provides a comfortable ride along
with the firming needed to provide a taut feel.
Incidentally, high quality Bridgestone Ecopia
tyres (205/50 x 17in) have high grip properties.
In terms of cost, the EcoSport Trend sits at
$26,990, while a high grade Titanium variant
is listed at $29,990. The evaluation car was the
latter.
In Titanium form the EcoSport wants for
little. It gets satellite navigation, cruise control
and speed limiter, push-button ignition, leather
accented seats and a large central display which
includes a rear view camera.
For its price the EcoSport is outstanding
buying, it is functional and pleasing to drive,
it is a car for those who need something just a
little different in a small package.
Even though it’s a squeeze for five it is fine
for those who frequently travel with children
and all of their requirements. Boot space is
generous and there is a deep floor thanks to the
spare wheel being located on the rear door.
As I’ve aged to the stage where I’ve earned a
SuperGold card, I’ve found my old joints and
bones aren’t quite as flexible as they once were.
That being the case, it was good to note that
the EcoSport has easy entry and egress, some
of that can be attributed to its high ground
clearance (209mm).
It is certainly a vehicle that will suit many age
groups – young to seniors.
