PLAYING THE NUMBERS GAME

The coalition between favourite
players and favourite
numbers has been a constant in
SANFL supporters’ minds since
they first started barracking for
their teams.
Initially numbers on the back of
guernseys were introduced
through the 1912 season, so
barrackers could easily identify
players, which helped with the
creation of the Football Budget
soon after.
Then through the 1960s and
‘70s, supporters proudly wore
their favourite player’s number
on the back of duffel coats, while
in present times, actual replica
guernseys with numbers are the
norm with young fans.
But why do players wear
particular numbers? Is it for luck,
a traditional number, or just the
first one allocated?
Two of the State’s greatest
players, Barrie Robran from
North Adelaide and Port
Adelaide’s Russell Ebert, wore
numbers 10 and seven
respectively. Through winning
seven Magarey Medals between
them, the pair attracted
many young footballers to
those numbers.
Robran’s number 10 at Prospect
went into mothballs when he
retired in 1980, only being
re-issued in 1994 to Josh
Francou, who two seasons
later won the Magarey Medal.
Currently Luke Ivens has
the famous number with
the Roosters.
“Number 10 became my
favourite number when I attained
the age of 10 years,” Robran said.
“I obviously thought at the time it
was a significant milestone in
my life.
“Also around that time (1957),
quite often there appeared

‘speccies’. He wore number 10
and I guess this would have
been very impressionable on a
young footy fan.
“I was honoured the club
should retire my number, but
never expected it to be for
any great length of time. The
same thing happened with
Mick Redden’s number (42),
which is now being worn by
Cohen Thiele.
“It is always nice for a
sportsman to wear his favourite
number. Psychologically it just
might aid performance. I wore
number 10 all my football career,
in Whyalla, North Adelaide
and Walkerville.”
Previously number one was
always worn by the captain of
the team, but over the past
couple of decades it has
changed, with only the Port
Adelaide Magpies continuing
the tradition.
Former champion Magpie
premiership captain and recent
coach Tim Ginever wore the
number one guernsey with pride
for four seasons and treasured
the honour.
On his debut in 1984, Ginever
wore number 19 but after seven
games was able to switch
to number two when Brian
Cunningham retired the following
season, as he was a fan
of Darrell Cahill, who wore
it previously.
“When I was made captain it
was a pleasure to wear the
number one on my back for the
most famous club in Australia,”
the gutsy former rover said.
“On a funny note, supporters
had to squint to see it at first,
as I followed big Greg Phillips
as captain.
“It was a sheer honour and
great to carry the responsibility
of having number one on your
back. It helped lift my game to
another level.
“To wear the number one made
the move to captain more
significant than just a title. I’m
surprised more clubs don’t
continue with it.”
At Central District, there are two

in former great John Platten (44)
and current skipper Paul
Thomas (16).
One had it thrust upon him,
while the other fought hard to
honour a former mentor, who
was a courageous leader of
the club.
“As a youngster I wore number
seven, except if I was captain
with Elizabeth juniors, where I’d
wear one,” Platten said.
“In 1981 I was just up in the
seniors and with just one
Reserves game under my belt I
made my League debut and
Merv Starkey (long-serving
equipment steward) just threw
me a jumper, which was number
44 and I stayed with it.
“I wasn’t going to give it away,
whatever they gave me, even
100, I would have stuck with it. I
was a fan of number seven in my
basketball days but 44 was my
footy number to stay.”
For Thomas it was a different
journey. His father Jamie playing
153 League games in number 59,
which would have been the
logical choice for Thomas junior,
but a young Matthew Slade had
already started his illustrious
career at Elizabeth with it.
The number allocated in
Thomo’s first venture in the
seniors with the Reserves in
2000 was 40, and when Daniel
Hulm announced his retirement
after leading the Bulldogs to
their first flag, the number 16
became available.
“When I first started with the
seniors we had mentors and
Hulm was mine, so it was natural
for me to want his number,
especially after a footy trip when
he took me under his wing,” the
current club captain said.
“But then he died in England
before the 2001 season started,
and there was a lot of feeling
number 16 should be retired in
his honour. But I wrote a
passionate plea on the club
website and I believe it changed
their views.
“At the time it was important to
me to get 16 but at the end of
the day it’s just another number.
“I do believe the number you
play your first League game is
the one to keep for the rest of
your career. The most important
number for me though is 154 –
one more game than dad.”
Number 13 is often regarded
as unlucky, with some buildings
going from the 12th floor to the
14th because of the
superstitious nature of the
numeral.
But in footy terms, 13 is a much
sought-after number, seen as
being a badge of honour,
although it is said some players
are tempting fate by wearing it.
Glenelg favourite Josh
Willoughby took an unusual
route to having number 13
on his back, based more on it
being an odd number than
anything else.
“My favourite number was three
and when I was in Sydney I
wore seven, as I was always
interested in odd numbers for
some reason,” the industrious
Tiger said.
“For me, 13 was the next best
number available.
“For a superstitious person, I
suppose it goes against the grain
a bit to have 13. I like my pregame
routines, which have been
the same for four seasons, the
same breakfast, a coffee before
every game.
“As a kid, I used to go to the
Crows games, and uncle Tim
(Ferrett), who wore number 13
for Brighton, bought me a
guernsey with that number, in
spite of me really wanting
number six for Tony Modra.
“I remember Scott Lee, who
wore 13, came up to me one day
and I told him he was my
favourite player, what else could
I say? But he was one of the best
back pocket players so I wasn’t
too unhappy and I love wearing
it now.”

the coaches in the heat of
the battle?
They are under enormous
strain but it is their
responsibility to maintain
composure at all times.
A senior coach lost the plot
during a break in play over the
weekend and the results were
very ugly.
Apologies have followed but
the damage has been done,
A simple - I am sorry - may not
be enough.
How far should sledging be
allowed to go? Everyone agrees
that it is a massive advantage to
get into the head of your
opponent but is there a line that
has to be drawn? Can you get
personal? Passion is so good
for the game but can there be
too much?
Spare a thought for the injured
players who, as the season
progresses, are dropping like
flies. Who is the most important
player in your team? Who is the
player you could least afford to
lose for a long period of time?
Have a decent ponder – there is
so much luck involved in any
season and that element will be
the key.

What was your highlight of
Round 3? What about the
performance of Sturt who upped
the tempo and sorted out
the Tigers?
Despite inaccuracy North
Adelaide was able to get across
the line. The Roosters had 20
scoring shots to 12 and just
managed a win. What about the
crowd – the Maggie supporters
came out in force!
The Bulldogs licked the plate
and the Eagles sit on top of the
table. Are we able to get a grip on
anything out of the ordinary yet?
What about the continued
frustration of so many poor shots
at goal? It is happening every
week and the conversion rate is
really poor. Is it nerves or just
bad kicking?
The side that can convert best
will creep up the ladder – who
is the worst shot at goal at
your club?
Will the 100 goal barrier be
challenged this year? The
Chambers connection might be
thereabouts and the Sturt giant is
capable of lots of big bags.
What about being a bit proactive
and rewarding the long
goal from outside 50 with nine
points? I know it happens in the
AFL in the pre- season cup. Why
can’t we jump ahead of the play
and be bold enough to make such
a change. The AFL will do it
eventually so why don’t we get
in first?
Where is Josh Carr at with his
football? The reason I ask this is
that the Tigers are getting a real
buzz about the veteran giving
service to the club.
It’s so good to see AFL players
back at grass roots level and the
local fans just love it. Have a look
at your lists and see how many
players from the two AFL clubs
you would expect to see in
SANFL colours at some stage
during the season.
It puzzles me that three SANFL
matches were played on Saturday
afternoon when Port was on the
job at AAMI Stadium. Surely
we can give consideration to
getting an SANFL match on as a
curtain raiser.
With my ear to the ground
Two legends were at a function
on the weekend. Both are absolute
stars. Is it true that one actually
signed a form 4 to join Carlton
in the VFL and the other almost
donned the club colours at
North Adelaide.
Those two possibilities never
eventuated and the famous pair
went on to be absolute stars in
the local competition. One actually
went to Melbourne for a while and
played some games.
It seems obvious now that you
do not have to be a teenager to be
considered for the top level. All
clubs are looking at mature aged
recruits and that will be the order
of the day in the future. Which
mature age player could you least
afford to lose?
Where should the coach be?
Where is the best place to watch
a game from for the coach? Some
AFL bosses like to get to ground
level and others prefer the coach’s
box. Many grass roots coaches
don’t get the choice. Spare a
thought for all the leaders in
country football. The coaches
boxes are almost always on the
ground – lots don’t even have
them at all.
What do you consider to

The antics of senior players who
should know better left a lot to
be desired.
In most sports, competitors are
not allowed anywhere near a
mobile on game day. It should be
the same on the football field.

Saturday and Sunday this

FORMER Adelaide Crows
defender Nathan Bassett,
a favourite son of the Parade
faithful, is looking forward
to the challenges of his debut
coaching season with the
Norwood Football Club.
The Redlegs missed the finals
last year amid turmoil after Trevor
Hill stepped down as coach and
was replaced by Jarrod Cotton in a
caretaker role.
Bassett, 33, has been appointed
as the full-time coach of Norwood
until the end of the 2012 season
after being with the Academy
last year.
His role with the Academy
followed his retirement from the
Adelaide Crows at the end of the
2008 season after 210 AFL games.
“I worked with our best juniors
as well as those that we
considered had a weakness that
could be rectified,’’ Bassett said.
“I hope that our list has improved
(this year) and is well placed by

the end of the season for long
term success.’’
Bassett said the coaching panel
had structured a training program
and trained the players
consistently in a game style that it
thought could bring Norwood
future success.
“We encourage their (the players)
strengths while working with them
to improve in the areas of their
and the team’s game that needs it.
“Whether it makes us a force or
not isn’t up to me.’’

and Adelaide Crows forward
Bryan Beinke is coaching the
Reserves and is the defensive
coach with the League side.
Former Norwood rover Scott
Borlace, who retired after last
season, is looking after the
forwards and is working with the
midfield, while former Norwood
and Collingwood player Ben
Wilson is the midfield coach.
Bassett believes that Norwood is
VERSATILE key position
player Sam Rowe believes
the new coaches at Norwood
have created a much different
feeling around the football club
this year.
“With (last year’s caretaker
coach) Jarrod Cotton (work
commitments) now also leaving
the job we have all new
coaches with a lot of ideas,’’
Rowe said.
“I think as long as we stick to
the structures that Bass
(Nathan Bassett) and the
coaches have come up with we
will be a very, very competitive
team this year.
“As a coach Bass brings a lot
of footy smarts.’’
Rowe, 22, said that Bassett
understood the game very well
and was good at
communicating his ideas.
“I think he provides a lot more
on the way back to the top after
struggling in recent seasons.
“What we do have now is financial
stability and a clear direction of
what it takes to succeed,’’ he said.
“There are short cuts to success
but these rarely prove fruitful.’’
Bassett said the club had a group
of young men at under-17 and
under-16 level who he believed
would be the backbone of the
football club for the next decade.
“Currently most are too young to
have much of an impact at senior
level but we do have many players
between 19 and 23 that have their
best football in front of them.’’
He said that the club had not
looked to go on a major recruiting
drive but instead would
concentrate on its youth.
“Some of our younger players that
should or already have played this
year include Michael Ialeggio, Gavin
Roberts, Mitch Grigg, Ben Jefferies
and Cameron Shenton while we will
be looking for continued
information to players about
where to set up and this will be
very helpful to the younger
guys in particular.’’
Rowe said that despite the
team’s winless start to the
season the team’s hopes of
being competitive and
consistent had not changed.
“If we do that we will win our
fair share of games,’’ he said.
“Personally, I would like to
step my game up another level
and be the best forward in
the competition.
“Last year (when the Redlegs
missed the finals) was a very
disappointing one for us
because we expected to be a
lot more competitive than
we were.’’
Rowe, who joined Norwood
in 2008, has played 37
games for the Redlegs in a
variety of positions, in defence
and attack.

He still keeps a close watch on
the Adelaide Crows and he said
their success this season would
depend on how they rebound from
their recent poor run with injuries
and this also applies to the
Redlegs.
“At their best they (the Crows) can
finish high on the ladder but if this
run with injuries then they could
struggle. ‘’
Apart from his football
involvement, Bassett also
has played cricket and bowls
this summer.
“I’ll be suiting up again for the ISC
Raptors in amateur soccer
this year.
“I also fancy myself as a cook and
spend too many hours at the
Central Markets.’’
Bassett also is a devoted
family man with wife Nicole and
daughter Charlotte.

SANfL WOMeN’S fOOtBALL LAuNCH
The SANFL launched its women’s footy season this
week (April 13) at AAMI Stadium in great style,
announcing plans to double its female participation
in the game to 20,000.
SANFL Game Development David Hutton said the
League was committed to giving all South Australians
– male and female – every opportunity to be involved
in football.
“We have inspiring female footballers in South
Australia and the numbers currently stand at 10,000
from Auskick to senior level,” he said.
“Our target over the next five years is to become
Australia’s premier state for women’s footy, boasting
the most female footballers relative to our population.”
Representatives of women’s football had plenty to
smile about on the day with the announcement of
South Australia’s new seniors club (Central District
Women’s Football Club), the inaugural U18s State
Team, two new all-girls Auskick centres in Adelaide’s
north and the upcoming 2011 National Women’s
Championships to be hosted in SA.
WILL CHAMBO SMASH tHe reCOrd?
Sturt’s star forward Brant Chambers could be in line
to break the club’s goalkicking record this weekend
against the Eagles at House Brothers Oval. Chambo’s
goal tally sits at 632 - just three majors short of Rick
Davies’ 635-goal record for the Unley-based club.
Chambers edged into the top 10 SANFL goalkickers
of all-time list last season and currently stands as
number eight. He has a way to go before slipping into
seventh place, presently held by Norwood’s Bruce
Schultz with 669 majors.

Congratulations to Mig Cripple, who won Round
3’s SA Lotteries SANFL and AFL footy tipping
competition. Mig tipped 11 out of 12 winners,
correctly predicting the 29-point margin of the
feature match, Central District and West Adelaide.

the West Adelaide Football Club for
winning the Round 3 Macca’s Cup Most Valuable
Player award.
The 18 year old Blood, who wears guernsey
number 16, claimed seven marks, five clearances
and six inside 50s in West’s ten-point victory
over Central District on the weekend.
With West down by three goals at halftime,
Dylan led from the front with a match-high 36
disposals and some impressive clearance work.
He was a member of the SANFL 2010 U18s
Academy and has started the Macca’s Cup
season strongly.
