OCTOBER 2018
Into October we go… it’s the month that the
nights draw in and the clocks go back, there
is certainly a change in the air…
With that in mind, keep a lookout for our
special Halloween themed recipes and
features this month, if you dare!
We have not one, but two celebrity interviews
for you this month. I caught up with Echo &
The Bunnymen’s Ian McCulloch about their
new album, ‘The Stars, The Oceans & The
Moon’ followed by a chat with Soul II Soul’s
Jazzie B about their 30th anniversary tour.
You can listen to all of our interviews at
www.youtube.com/bouncemagazineuk.
During September, I had the pleasure in
doing a spot of catwalk modelling for Collen
& Clare’s charity fashion show at Henham
Park, raising money for the East Anglian
Air Ambulance. Over £4000 was raised on
the evening, with more still coming in at the
donation boxes in each of Collen & Clare’s
three stores, read more on pages 14-17.
Our review in this edition took place at The Ivy
Brasserie Norwich. Whilst the decor is indeed
something to shout about, it’s the food and
drink selection that really is the star attraction.
Read what we thought in the food and drink
section.
Also in this issue, don’t miss our regular
contributors, seasonal recipes and our
competition to see Arrested Development at
Hospice lottery is on the lookout for
new members...
HOSPICE CHARITY
LOTTERY
St Nicholas Hospice Care, which provides services and
support for those across West Suffolk with long-term and
life-threatening illnesses, is hoping more people will help
support the charity by becoming a member of its lottery.
Could you give our local hospice a
helping hand by supporting their
charity lottery?
Alison Bacon-Snow, the hospice’s lottery
manager, said: “At the hospice we firmly
believe that everyone in our community
should have the very best experiences in
the final chapters of their lives.
“The lottery is a fun way of giving to
and supporting the hospice but it is also
possibly one of the most dependable &
consistent fundraising activities we have.
Every year our members help to raise more
than £380,000. We always look forward
to welcoming new people to our lottery.
We need people to spread the word, to friends and
family and also colleagues at work; not only about the
hospice’s lottery, but also about the care and services
we provide and not only for those coping with illness,
but also the support we can give those who are left
behind.”
The weekly draw, which celebrated its 20th birthday
in June, has raised around £7.4 million since it started
in 1998 and gives players the chance to win prizes
ranging from £10 to £1,000 every Friday. The second
prize is £250, but if this is not won, it rolls over to the
following weeks’ draw, increasing by £250 until it is
won or reaches £10,000 – at which point one player is
guaranteed to scoop the whole jackpot amount!
You can join the lottery at www.stnicholashospice.org.
Well hello there! I’m back with my monthly column… OK, so firstly a reminder
about me. I’m Zena (Zee for short), I’m 45, a mother and a grandmother.
Winter is coming!
Although I’ve never
do know that’s a catch
Now is the time to make
sure your winter coat is in
Fear not, I am on hand to
But you know what? This
season I’m reverting to a
I’m investing in the staples.
A neutral wool Crombie
style coat and a decent pair
of black Chelsea boots.
Although the Church’s
boots I really want are a bit out
of my price range, I’ve found some
Grenson boots that will last a lifetime - plus
they are beautiful.
Over the last three winters I’ve had my
trusty leopard print fur coat and I love it.
I will have a full winter coat and boot guide
over on the Blog so be sure to check it out.
I also wore a dress from the
Choosing Your Wedding Cake
BY LISA MARIE SMITH
The main focus of most
wedding receptions is
the wedding cake.
Not many people leave
the reception before the
cake is cut, as it is an
important tradition.
Your wedding cake will
feature in a lot of wedding
photographs, which you will
have to look at for years
to come. Thus, you should
take some time to choose
the perfect wedding cake.
So here are my top tips to
wedding cake perfection!
STEP 1: START EARLY
Your venue choice can really influence the aesthetic
and design details of your cake: Delicate buttercream
icing won’t withstand the heat as well as sturdier
fondant at an outdoor summer wedding, for example,
so once you’ve secured your location, start shopping
around for your baker.
STEP 2: FIND YOUR BAKER
Word of mouth is the tried-and-true way to find a
baker, but attending wedding fairs is another route.
Couples have the opportunity to meet local bakers and
see and sample cake without having to commit to a
private consultation.
STEP 3: MEET AND GREET
Once you’ve narrowed your search to two or three
bakers (or even The One), the cake journey begins!
Before even thinking about red velvet vs. vanilla bean,
your baker will need the nitty-gritty details such as
wedding date, venue and estimated head count.
22

WEDDING
OCTOBER OCTOBER 2018 | 2018 ISSUE | ISSUE #72 | #72 WEDDING
STEP 4: CONSIDER THE COSTS
The cost of a cake is determined
by the number of servings needed
and the complexity of the design.
Sugar flowers can spike the costs
because they are handcrafted, timeconsuming
— and thus expensive.
STEP 5: GET INSPIRED
Your overall wedding style can
kick-start the design process with
your baker, but don’t stop there.
Mood boards, images of cakes you
love, your wedding colour palette,
your dress — any and all of these
elements will get the cake design
wheels in motion.
STEP 6: BE FEARLESS WITH
FLAVOURS
Some bakers charge extra for
so-called premium flavours and
fillings, others do not, so be sure to
establish any cost upgrades at your
tasting so you don’t get hit with
surprise surcharges. I encourage
people to push the flavour envelope.
Why go with vanilla, chocolate
or red velvet when there’s praline
and hazelnut cake accented with
chocolate mousse and a drizzle of
caramel to consider?
Your cake should be both beautiful
and delicious: Don’t choose flavours
you think everyone will like, choose
the flavours you like. Remember, it’s
your wedding and this is your cake.
Until next time...
Lisa x
Need a little help
organising your wedding
photography? Look
no further! We ask
multi award-winning
photographer, Haleana
Knights...
Q: How do you make
sure you meet a couple’s
requirements?
A: I always try and meet
my couples before hand
so that I can get to know
what they like and dislike,
what their vision of the day
looks like and how they feel
in front of the camera. I
then encourage the couple
to contact me as many
times as they need to. We
also meet again before
the big day to firm up the
itinerary details and tie up
any loose ends. Some of the
best weddings I have ever
shot, have been as a result
of open communications
between me and the couple
getting married. I love it
when they feel inspired by
our chats and are invested in
getting the best shots of their
day as possible.
Q: How would you describe
your style? Do you prefer
candid or more traditional
photos?
A: I love them both for
different reasons! I absolutely
love disappearing into the
background and capturing
the moments as they happen,
whether it’s the father’s
reaction to his daughter in her
wedding dress or the tears of
laughter during the best man’s
speech. Having said that, a
majority of my couples ask
for the group shots because
they know that their parents or
grandparents will love having
these for the mantelpiece.
My favourite part of the day
is the stylised session where
I steal the newlyweds away
for a while to get some really
beautiful pictures of them
alone, together. If a couple tell
me that they want an entirely
documentary-style wedding
with absolutely no posed
photos, then that is what I will
deliver and if a couple ask for
mainly candid photography
with a few traditional elements
thrown in, I will deliver that
too. So in a nutshell, I would
say that I offer something
in the middle, with a little
flexibility thrown in.
Q: Finally, what are your top
tips for couple’s choosing a
wedding photographer?
A: Ask to see a selection of
images throughout the day.
It’s really important to see
whether the photographer
you’re interested in can
handle all the different light
situations. I’d also be sure that
they are operating have the
proper insurances, contracts
and all the appropriate gear
and equipment for your
day. And last, but not least,
make sure you meet your
photographer face to face
before booking and be sure
that you get along! They will
be shadowing you on one of
the most important days of
your life after all!
Josh Kelly -
The Future
Looks Bright...
OCTOBER 2018 | ISSUE #72
BY RALPH OATES
A series of articles which will feature boxing facts
from both the past to the present...
At the moment British boxing
is in the fortunate position
of having a host of talented
fighters in each weight
division all of whom look
destined to challenge for
a major title in the months
to come. One outstanding
performer who deserves a
mention is Commonwealth
and World Boxing Association
International welterweight
champion Josh Kelly.
Sunderland born Kelly who
is nicknamed ‘Pretty Boy’
is undefeated in seven
professional bouts and has
shown the skill set even at this
early stage to suggest that he
is more than capable of winning
a world championship in the
fullness of time. Anything can
of course happen in the fight
game so nothing is definite but
this boxer at the age of twenty
four looks a little special.
Josh made his professional
debut at The SSE Hydro in
Glasgow in Scotland on the
15 April 2017 outpointing
opponent Jay Byrne of
Ireland over six rounds in an
entertaining contest. Byrne
dipped between the ropes to
meet Kelly with a record of five
bouts of which he won four
and lost one. So Byrne was not
an easy touch for Kelly’s first
outing
Kelly had a further four fights
during 2017 winning them all
inside the scheduled distance
in impressive style. Then on
the 31 March 2018 in just his
sixth professional outing Kelly
was matched with Mexican
born Carlos Molina in a contest
for the vacant World Boxing
Association International
welterweight title at the
Principality Stadium, Cardiff in
Wales. At first sight it looked
as if this match may have been
a little too ambitious for Kelly.
Molina was a former holder
of the International Boxing
Federation World Superwelterweight
championship and
had participated in thirty eight
bouts winning twenty eight
losing eight with two drawn.
On the night Kelly confirmed
his potential when he boxed
his way to a ten round point’s
decision to defeat Molina and
take the championship.
Kelly did not rest on his laurels
after the Molina victory he
was back in the ring on the 16
June 2018 the venue this time
being the Metro Radio Arena in
Newcastle Tyne and Wear. Kelly
was to defend his newly won
WBA International crown and
also challenge Australian Kris
George for the Commonwealth
title. Once again this looked to
be a difficult contest for the
Briton George had a record
of fifteen fights with just one
defeat. Kelly once again lived
up to expectations when he put
in a superb performance which
saw George retire in round
seven of a bout scheduled for
twelve.
There is a great deal to get
excited about when viewing
the prospects of Kelly. However
the welterweight division
is a tough one with many
outstanding performers so it
would be sensible not to rush
Kelly too quickly towards the
elite. The wise approach would
be to match Kelly carefully and
intelligently for him to gain vital
experience.
Ideally the young hopeful can
in the months to come defend
his Commonwealth and WBA
International belts and also
target the British crown. If
successful in these endeavours
and there’s every reason to
believe that he will be, he
can then cast an eye on the
European crown. This too is a
title he can add to his collection
of championships. For Josh
Kelly the future looks bright.
OCTOBER OCTOBER 2018 2018 | ISSUE | ISSUE #72 #72 | JAZZIE B
JAZZIE B
We speak to Jazzie B about Soul II Soul’s 30 year anniversary...
Iconic British band Soul II Soul will embark
on a landmark tour of the UK in 2018 marking
30 years of hugely influential success, paying
tribute to their legendary debut album, ‘Club
Classics Vol 1’.
The double Grammy Award winning and
five-time Brit Award nominated band will play
12 dates in the UK in October and November
2018, including a date at London’s Palladium,
featuring a stunning production.
member, Jazzie B, about the upcoming
anniversary tour…
R: How did you first get into music?
As a kid really, I used to like listening to the
radio. Growing up, three of my brothers had
sound systems, so I guess that was a major
influence. I was drawn into that, through
things like the speakers and the smell of the
equipment, the hustle and bustle of it all.
With huge hits including ‘Keep On Movin’
(which sold over a million copies in the US
alone) and the UK number one single ‘Back To
Life (However Do You Want Me)’, Soul II Soul
progressed from being one of the leaders of
the 1980’s warehouse
scene to pioneering
British black music
around the world, and
securing commercial
success for themselves
and the huge amount
of artists they have
influenced.
During the course of
their stellar career
the band have sold over 10 million albums
worldwide and main man Jazzie B was
awarded an OBE for services to music in
2008, as well as winning an Ivor Novello
Award for Inspiration, as “the man who gave
British black music a soul of its own”.
Rachel Ducker catches up with founding
R: What kind of music did you used to listen
to growing up?
I used to listen to a lot of folk music, which
my parents listened to, and then a stable
diet of reggae music, sprinkled
in with a little bit of Engelbert
Humperdinck.
My mum was a great fan of Tom
Jones, so I used to listened to him
and obviously I had The Beatles
albums.
I guess for me, The Rolling Stones
were the ones at the time, a bit
of Jimmy Hendrix, and jazz was
played around the place to, and then of
course growing up Bennie and the Jets and
Ziggy Stardust.
R: Quite a range of tastes there?
Yeah, it was an incredible time in the 60s and
70s music wise; I mean TV had just started to
explode, so for us as young people it was
a big thing.
for us and look what that turned out to be
[laughs].
I guess when we were younger our
imaginations were so much wider because
we didn’t have all of these references.
R: I guess we are guilty of taking things
for granted in this day and age?
I believe so, it’s just so much faster, plus
the most important thing about it was that
people forget that my generation grew
up in a class system. This is why we were
always so different from the Americans;
there was always a level of expectation
R: How did Soul II Soul first form?
We were a sound system, an
amalgamation of music and fashion, that’s
how we formed. The idea of Soul II Soul
is that we were a band of sound system
DJs, we wanted to be the biggest sound
system in the world.
So Virgin came along and so did Island
Records, so we had a choice, and we
decided to go with Virgin. We were quite
bohemian and unusual and that’s how we
came about.
R: How did you come up with the name?
Two of us, myself and Daddae, we were
like Soul II Soul, before we were called
Jah Rico, like any family your sort of
dysfunctional, which is also part of your
brilliance I guess.
R: People will remember your songs
Back to Life (However Do You Want
Me) and Keep On Moving, back in 1988,
what’s been the secret to your continued
success?
I don’t know [laughs] that’s one of the
things with this game, there are no rules
or anything like that, it ain’t what you do
but the way that you do it!
R: Well I have heard that somewhere
before? [Laughs]
How do you think Soul II Soul shows have
changed over time?
Well, three members have gone to the
upper room, so that shows a few changes
have had to be made, it doesn’t get
anymore real than that does it? It’s all part
of the journey.
tour shortly; can you believe it’s been 30
Course I can – I’ve got kids!
Yeah, that’s a good reflection to have, it’s
nice that I can come out again and dust off
the old boots.
R: What are you looking forward to the
most?
Seeing the whites of people’s eyes, we’ve
been doing these shows now for thousands
and thousands of people and you can’t see
anything, so now we get to do things like
this.
It’s quite a self-indulged line of shows
we’ve got lined up. They are going to be
really intimate.
R: That sounds exciting!
During our peak we were big.
So this time we look forward to seeing
people who really want to be there, we
want to be with more people who are
really into this stuff, in a nice intimate place
and for them to be there, that makes the
mood, that makes the party because you
come with that intention.
You come to go back to life and to keep on
moving because you’ve been missing it.
I tell you what, as soon as that comes along
I will let you know; I haven’t quite got there
yet.
R: After the tour – what else can we look
forward to going into 2019? Are you busy
working on other stuff?
Ah yeah, loads but lets just take one step
at a time and look forward to these shows.
Let’s get these shows done and then we’ll
have another chat.
R: That sounds wonderful.
Thank you so much for your time and I
wish you all the success for the tour, not
that you will need it by the sounds of
things!
I really appreciate you doing this thank you
No Failure Only Feedback...
When we don’t achieve something, or
something hasn’t gone according to
plan, for example you didn’t get the
promotion you were after or achieve
the grades you wanted.
We tend to take it personally and say to ourselves
that we’ve failed, but have we?
I think we can all learn something from Edison,
I know I certainly have, there is no failure, only
feedback. If something doesn’t go our way, or we
don’t achieve what we set out to do, it doesn’t
mean failure. Learn from the experience to help
you move forward and stop it from knocking your
confidence.
What Can I Learn?
When we perceive ourselves to have “failed”
it can affect our confidence and self-esteem,
normally at times when we need a confidence
boost rather than a knock.
I have many clients, when looking back over
their lives, beat themselves up because of
past mistakes or decisions they made at the
time.
A scientist treats failure differently, good job or
else we wouldn’t have half the things we do, like
the light bulb. It took Edison over 1,000 attempts
to create the lightbulb. A reporter asked Edison
how it felt to fail one thousand times and Edison
replied:
“I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an
invention with 1,000 steps”.
I point out to them, that at that time they didn’t
have all the information that they have access
to now, and they wouldn’t intentionally make a
mistake.
So, when looking back, say to yourself “what can
I learn” rather than “I should have…” or “I could
of have…”. Remember, there is no failure only
feedback.
EAGLE
POSE
(gah -rue-DAHS-anna)
Benefits
Strengthens and stretches the ankles and calves
Stretches the thighs, hips, shoulders, and back
Improves concentration
Improves sense of balance
Cautions:
Students with knee injuries should avoid
this pose, or perform only the leg position
described in the Beginner’s Tip.
How to try the pose:
1. Stand in Tadasana. Bend your knees slightly, lift
your left foot up and, balancing on your right foot,
cross your left thigh over the right. Point your left
toes toward the floor, press the foot back, and
then hook the top of the foot behind the lower
right calf. Balance on the right foot.
2. Stretch your arms straight forward, parallel to
the floor, and spread your scapulas wide across
the back of your torso. Cross the arms in front
of your torso so that the right arm is above the
left, then bend your elbows. Snug the right elbow
into the crook of the left, and raise the forearms
perpendicular to the floor. The backs of your
hands should be facing each other.
3. Press the right hand to the right and the left
hand to the left, so that the palms are now facing
each other. The thumb of the right hand should
pass in front of the little finger of the left. Now
press the palms together (as much as is possible
for you), lift your elbows up, and stretch the
fingers toward the ceiling.
4. Stay for 15 to 30 seconds, then unwind the
legs and arms and stand in Tadasana again.
Repeat for the same length of time with the arms
and legs reversed.
Beginner’s Tip:
Beginners often find it difficult to wrap the
arms around until the palms touch. Stretch your
arms straight forward, parallel to the floor, while
holding onto the ends of a strap. Follow the rest
of the instructions stated in step 2 above and
keep the strap taut between your hands.
Beginners also find it difficult to hook the raisedleg
foot behind the standing-leg calf, and then
balance on the standing foot. As a short-term
option cross the legs but, instead of hooking
the raised foot and calf, press the big toe of the
raised-leg foot against the floor to help maintain
your balance.
With thanks to www.yogajournal.com/poses.
Please take care in all poses, if unsure
please attend a class or ask for a
private lesson.
The wines of
Croatia
Croatia with its boundary close to Italy and Bosnia etc has been making
wine for millennia. Wine is popular in Croatia and is often consumed with
meals. Most is white but there are some notable reds and roses.
strict rules protecting the vineyards.
In the 5th Century the Ottoman Turks imposed
strict anti- alcohol laws but managed to continue
making wine.
BY ‘WINE BUFF’ FRED FISHER
Like much of Eastern Europe, wine was made
here well before the Romans and previous
inhabitants like the Illyrians, living during the
Bronze Age and Iron Age, grew grape vines.
Some Dalmatian Islands dating back to Ancient
Greek times made wine 2500 years ago. Greek
settlers arrived in the 5th century BC.
Under the Roman Empire production grew
leading to exports to other parts of Europe.
Over the years production expanded and by 1214
quality control came about by the addition of
In the 18th Century Croatia came under the
control of the Habsburg Empire where wine
flourished during the 19th and 20th Centuries.
Phylloxera struck in 1874 but luckily Croatia was
not so affected and their exports expanded.
At the beginning of the 20th Century however
Croatia succumbed to the bug. Many expert
Croatian winemakers then fled to the New World,
much to their benefit.
With the creation of Yugoslavia and communist
rule, private vineyards were discouraged and
large co-operatives established. This led to
quantity rather than quality. Croatia is now
independent and creating very fine wine again.
Climate and geography...
Lying along the Adriatic Sea, the coastal
vineyards have the benefit of the cooling effect
of the sea and those inland find a hotter climate.
Many areas along its coastline have many hours
of sunlight, ideal for grape growing. Inland there
are mountainous regions having cold winters and
hot summers, plus enough rain to make grape
growing successful. One other product coming
from the area is oak, which is used for wine casks.
Wine Styles...
There are two distinct regions in Croatia
producing wine. The Inland continental climate
region in the North-East producing rich fruity
white wines similar to Slovenian,
Austrian and Hungarian wines. More
individual wines are produced
using local grape varieties
laying along the coastal areas.
Wine Regions...
CONTINENTAL CROATIA
This area stretches North-West
to South-East along the Drava
and Sava rivers with cold winters and
hot summers. The best known area is probably
Slavonia producing light, crisp, refreshing and
slightly aromatic wine from the Grasevina grape.
Other sub-regions number 6 in all.
COASTAL CROATIA
This region runs from Istria in the north to
Dalmatia in the south. A more Mediterranean
climate, long hot and dry summers and mild,
short and wet winters. Great for wine production.
Fruity dry whites from a variety of grapes. The
grapes are mostly Malvasia but also the red
Teran and Plavic Mali. The region is divided into 5
parts including Istria, Croatian Coast and 3 parts
of Dalmatia. After joining the EU they had to
divide Croatia into 3 regions, Eastern Continental
Croatia, Western Continental Croatia and Coastal
Croatia. These were then also divided into their
own sub-Regions
Grape Varieties...
Croatian grape variety names are difficult for
us to understand and even though many classic
grape varieties from the rest of Europe are used
they stick by their indigenous varieties.
Rightly so as they produce some extremely rich
wines. Some such are Plavac Mali, Postup,
Dingac and Zlatan Plavac.
Indeed it was felt that the Zinfandel
was descended from the Plavac Mali,
but DNA testing has now proved
that Plavac Mali is in fact a child
of the true Zinfandel from Croatia
called the Crljenak Kastelanski (Gulp).
Also included in this discussion is that the
Zinfandel is also the Primitivo, a popular and
successful Italian grape.
Following devastation caused by Phylloxera in
the late 1800’s vines in Croatia have to be grafted
onto American rootstock like almost the rest of
the world, in order to survive.
Although some of the grape varieties grown in
Croatia can be confusing they produce some
great wines and should be added to the vast pool
of top varieties that we make our wine from.
Conclusions...
Trying to remember the names though is difficult, it took me long enough to learn of the
Zinfandels true name but I enjoy it better now that I can pronounce it. Enjoy yet another
adventure into the world of wine.
Autumn
Pumpkin Soup
This velvety pumpkin soup recipe is
great for Bonfire Night - it’s served
with a splash of sherry in a hollowedout
pumpkin...
1. Cut the top off the pumpkin and set aside.
Scoop out the inside. Using a sharp knife and
a spoon, carefully hollow out the pumpkin,
removing the flesh and setting aside. (Leave
2cm/1in of flesh around the inside.)
Ingredients
• 1 x 4kg/8lb 13oz pumpkin
• 125g/4oz butter
• 2 medium onions, peeled, finely chopped
2. Chop the scooped-out pumpkin flesh. Melt
the butter in a large pan with a lid over a low
heat and add the onions. Cook the onions
gently for 10 minutes, until they are brown.
• 1 cinnamon stick
• freshly grated nutmeg
3. Add the pumpkin flesh, the cinnamon and
nutmeg, and season, to taste, with salt and
freshly ground black pepper. Increase the heat
to medium and cover with the lid. Cook for
40-45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the
pumpkin is cooked through. Add the stock
and bring to the boil. Remove from the heat
and allow to cool slightly. Transfer the soup to
a food processor and blend until smooth.
• salt and freshly ground black pepper
• 1.7 litres/3 pints chicken stock
(vegetarians may substitute vegetable stock)
• 3 tablespoons sherry
4. Return the soup to the pan and bring to a
low simmer and cook for a further half an hour.
45 minutes before eating, preheat the oven
to 170C/335F/Gas 3. Pour the soup into the
hollow pumpkin shell, add the sherry and
stir to combine. Place the reserved pumpkin
‘lid’ onto the pumpkin and place onto a large
baking tray. Cook in the oven for about 45
minutes, to bring the soup up to temperature.
To serve, carefully remove from the oven and
serve the soup in the pumpkin at the table.
Ladle into bowls and serve.
• Empty the pizza base mix into a bowl and stir
in 100ml warm water. Mix to a soft dough, then
tip out onto a lightly floured surface and knead
for 5 minutes, or until smooth.
• Roll out the dough to roughly 24cm in
diameter. Transfer to a large, greased baking
sheet and turn up the edge of the base for a
crust. Leave to stand in a warm place for 10
minutes.
Treat your little monsters
this Halloween...
The perfect easy bake for a scary
Halloween treat, this easy homemade
pizza recipe is topped with gooey
mozzarella ghosts, salami bats and black
olive spiders.
Simply double (or even triple) the
quantities if you have a large gang of
trick-or-treaters to feed.
Ingredients
• 200ml (1/3oz) passata
• 1 tbsp olive oil
• 1 x 145g pack pizza base mix
• 4 salami slices, cut into bat shapes
• 7 pitted black olives, halved
• 125g (4oz) ball mozzarella, torn into pieces
Method
• Preheat the oven to gas 7, 220°C, fan 200°C.
Put the passata and olive oil in a pan and bring
to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 5
minutes, or until thickened.
• Meanwhile, thinly slice 8 olive halves
lengthways into 4 to make 32 legs for the
spider (each spider has eight). Dice two more
olive halves to make eyes for the mozzarella
ghosts.
• Spread the passata over the base, allowing
a 1cm (1/2in) border. Top with the salami and
arrange the torn mozzarella in ghost shapes
(with room to spread). Position the remaining
olives, cut-side down, and arrange 4 spidery
legs on either side.
• Cook the pizza for 15-18 minutes, until
bubbling and golden. Remove from the
oven and leave to cool for 1 minute, before
adding the reserved olive eyes to each melted
mozzarella ghost. Serve immediately.
Happy Halloween!
THE IVY NORWICH
BRASSERIE
By Rachel Ducker
Within the heart of Norwich,
The Ivy Norwich Brasserie offers
sophisticated and friendly allday
dining to both residents and
visitors alike.
On London Street, the Brasserie is open seven
days a week featuring an extensive all-day
menu and a beautiful focal point bar.
The Ivy brand is
synonymous with
high-quality food,
exceptional service
and stylish interiors,
so when we learned
that The Ivy
Brasserie was due to open in Norwich, I could
hardly contain my excitement.
We had our first ‘sneak peek’ at the VIP press
event, which took place at the beginning of
August.
The décor features eye-catching yet refined
interiors designed by the acclaimed Martin
Brudnizki Design Studio.
I think I stood in silence for a few seconds
when I entered the building; having never
been to an Ivy Brasserie before, I didn’t expect
it to be so beautiful.
in, or just sip on a glass of something in the
bar area.
The signature green colour palette sits against
striking leather banquettes, polished marble
floors and bronzed antiques.
“In a salute to the local area The
Ivy offers locally sourced products”.
Bright colourful prints mask the walls from
floor to ceiling; its Art Nouveau styling
gives a sense of grandeur and elegance, not
forgetting the central focal point - the grand
marble-topped bar glistening with shiny
champagne glasses.
After the launch, they invited back to
experience The Ivy in all its glory.
Whilst the decor is indeed something to shout
about, it’s the food and drink selection that
really is the star attraction. Here you can dine
From Bure Gold and Wherry Amber Ale,
brewed by Woodforde’s in Woodbastwick
to Norfolk’s Boadicea Gin used to make the
signature cocktails including the Iceni Martini
and Felbrigg Gardens.
In terms of food you can expect modern
British classics for breakfast, weekend brunch,
lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Menus include
signature dishes such as The Ivy Collection
shepherd’s pie, a truffle chicken sandwich
and grilled fish, as well as light and healthy
brunch options, delicious afternoon teas
and an extensive drinks menu. For me as a
vegetarian, it delighted me to see a special
vegan/vegetarian menu.
Lychee, Ginger and Havana 3-year-old rum).
It was a fun drink although my husband kept
trying to steal my Candy Floss! Ladies beware!
As we took our seats in the first floor
restaurant, service was quick and the staffs
were incredibly friendly. I had a
lovely conversation with the
smellier who helped us choose
a lovely bottle of white
wine to complement our
meal, whilst the other
waiter helped with food
recommendations.
Whilst I made my allimportant
food choice
decision, I treated myself to a
delicious Candy Floss Fizz (Candy
floss and Prosecco complemented with Rose,
To start, I opted for the ‘Mozzerella Di Bufala’
a Caprese salad. I can only describe this as
one of the freshest salads I’d had all
summer, creamy, milky, mozzarella
cheese topped with juicy sweet
tomatoes, complimented with
punchy pesto. Moorish! Whilst
my husband had the ‘Truffled
Orzo Pasta’, the scent of the
truffle was heavenly, sadly I
was to engrossed in my own
food to remember to steal a bite
on this occasion!
Onto the main event, I selected
the ‘Sweet Potato Keralan Curry’; it was
flavoursome, with just a hint of spice. They
served the rice on the side with some
coconut yoghurt, which I liked as I could
decide on how much I wanted, all in all a
very cute dish. Sam had the ‘Chargrilled
Halloumi with Padron Peppers’ and a few
side dishes; it looked delicious and made a
nice change from the standard vegetarian
Goats Cheese Risotto!
For pudding, there was only one contender
for me, the Chocolate Bomb - heaven in a
dish. They poured a warm sauce over the
hard case of chocolate; it melted before my
eyes to reveal honeycomb pieces in vanilla
ice cream! Sam had the Blackberry Ice Cream
Sunday, lovely but still not a patch on mine!
We loved every moment of our evening here
from the atmosphere, to service, to the food
and drink on offer; even the background music
was fitting! The attention to detail throughout
the entire restaurant is obvious – even the
washrooms exude Gatsby era elegance, and as
we all know, if the toilets are good, the rest is
going to follow suite!
IAN MCCULLOCH
Rachel Ducker speaks exclusively to Echo & the Bunnymen’s,
Ian McCulloch, about his time in the band, new album and upcoming tour...
Bands rarely ever arrive as the full package.
Some manage to achieve that status through
a lot of effort and a bit of luck; often though,
there’s a magical element that sits just out
of reach. Echo & the Bunnymen were the full
package – maybe the first band of my youth
to achieve that.
They had amazing songs
and lyrics that provoked
and inspired; stunning wit
and a look that was just
perfection. There was no
weak link visually, no bad
leather jackets or mullets.
And they had the ambition
and the confidence to
attempt unconventional
ideas, whether it was
heading to Iceland to do
photos or getting their fans
to do a group cycle ride around Liverpool for
A Crystal Day. There wasn’t one piece out of
place. This was a band to believe in.
As previously revealed, THE STARS, THE
OCEANS & THE MOON sees the band return
to their peerless back catalogue to reinterpret
thirteen of their most beloved songs with
‘strings and things’.
decade spanning archive. Of the new versions,
Ian McCulloch said, “I’m not doing this for
anyone else. I’m doing it as it’s important to
me to make the songs better. I have to do it”.
The first track released from the album –
SEVEN SEAS – is available now to stream,
to download and as an instant grat with
all album pre-orders via
the artist store or iTunes.
Originally a Top Twenty hit in
1984, SEVEN SEAS was the
third single from their classic
fourth studio album, OCEAN
RAIN.
Bounce Magazine’s, Rachel
Ducker, speaks to Ian
McCulloch about the bands
new album.
R: Hi Ian, firstly I wondered how you first got
into music?
Growing up, I didn’t really live in a very
musical household.
I suppose I first got into music when I heard
Bowie when I was 12 or 13 around the time
Starman came out.
The album also features two future classics
– THE SOMNAMBULIST and HOW FAR.
Recorded at The Dog House Studios with
co-producer Andy Wright, ECHO & THE
BUNNYMEN handpicked the selection of
tracks for the album from their majestic, four-
His voice was just like nothing I’d ever heard
and when Starman played on the radio, it was
like ‘wow’, there was just something in his
voice.
eventually it clicked and I said “we are going
to be the best band in the world ever”!
I knew when I was 13 what I wanted to do; I
wanted to be Bowie and borrow his clothes
that was my dream.
So I was on the dole for about 18 months,
in that time I had three job interviews, I
remember one, there was a panel and they
asked me what I thought the civil service was
about and I didn’t have a sodding clue!
He just looked at me with his mug of tea in
disbelief and I looked at him in disbelief at
his disbelief of what I had just said! I replied
what’s the point of doing this if we are not
going to be the best band in the world ever?
R: How did you come up with the band
name?
During another interview someone called me
out and said “you don’t want to be here do
you” and I said “no”. At least I was honest!
I was good at not getting jobs on purpose!
To be fair, I knew what I was going to do and
I would tell them “you’ll see me on the telly,
I am going to be in the biggest band of all
time!” without that self belief I wouldn’t have
been where I am now. I always felt there was
nothing else I wanted to do.
I didn’t; I shared a flat with a guy named
Paul. We called him Smelly Ellie, that was his
nickname, he was on a teacher training course;
he taught maths to kids.
I said to him one day “we’ve got a gig this
week” and he said “what are you called”,
and I said “I haven’t got a clue”. So he wrote
down about ten names and then Echo & the
Bunnymen was one of them and I thought that
sounds like us.
R: Were you in any other bands before you
formed Echo?
There was a band called the Crucial Three, but
it sounded so crap I would have to go and wait
in the living room until practice was over, we
were rubbish!
R: How did you first meet your fellow band
members?
It was someone’s birthday, and I was at a bar
in Liverpool, Will Sergeant was sitting at a
table and he goes “hello” [laughs] I think he
might have used his index finger to summon
me, and he said “I heard you’re a great singer,”
though I am not sure who he heard that from,
and he asked me to go to his to play some
At the time I thought we were like then men
that married bunny girls. Smelly Ellie did smell
and he did think of the name!
R: Well you have to thank him for that at
least!
I did thank him!
R: Your first album was released in 1980,
what’s been the secret to your continued
success? You’re still hear and you have your
new album coming out…
Washing your face kid, washing your face with
salt water and not worrying too much!
It was never about being on the front covers,
even though I did like that, but then you’re
worrying if it’s a bad photo or if you have
spinach in your teeth.
It was more about being a scouser for me,
someone who likes footie and humour.
I mean, I really do like the sound of my own
voice, both for annoying people and for
singing. It’s the only way I can tell my story
and other people’s stories.
It’s when someone goes “ah that’s exactly how
I’m feeling”. So really that’s the main reason
as to why I still want to be here and perhaps
why I am.
R: You have your new album out on 5 th
October named The Stars, The Oceans and
The Moon… can you tell us more about the
album?
I thought I know that song so well - I own that
moon, it’s not the moon that everyone thinks,
I own the “killer moon” and I sing it like I’m on
that moon. Not look up, but looking across.
songs, you forget to look at change.
This is why I wanted to do this to face some of
the old songs again.
R: What’s the stand out feature about the
album?
It’s my voice more than anything; I am so lucky
to have that voice.
R: You are, I wish I had a voice like you.
Danny from Embrace said that, he said “ah
Mac, the greatest voice that this country has
produced”… it’s a shame they are saddled
with a name like Embrace, same as we are
saddled with Echo & the Bunnymen, I hate
saying it!
F-cking syllables, too many, we should have
been called something else. But anyway,
that’s what I wanted to be when I was 13, the
greatest voice.
R: You’ve also got your tour coming up!
I didn’t want to change it as a song but I
wanted to surprise myself.
Yeah, that’s going to be fantastic! The album
will have been out then.
Things have changed, I like the fact you can
hear me breathing and the sound of my saliva;
I wanted it to be more real.
It’s about - be a statue or be a man or be a liar
or be truthful.
R: Well thanks so much for your time today
and good luck with the album and the tour.
Please send me over a copy of the magazine
and pop along to one of the shows! I’ll buy you
some French Martinis.
I wanted to use this album to reflect – I didn’t
like the singing on a lot of the early records. I
pronounce my ‘e’s too much.
R: I imagine as you grow older you change?
Especially when you are writing.
Sometimes it’s hard when you write new
R: You know my poison that would be great.
Thanks very much!
The Power of a
PICK ME UP
So, sometimes everything just goes a
bit wrong all at the same time doesn’t
it? Work, health, relationships,
yep, we’ve all been there...
BY RUBY REED
It happens to the
best of us...
And I got to have my very
own meltdown just recently
- a mixture of deadlines, the
odd argument and a virus!
But we won’t go into that…
I will however say exactly how
I managed to perk up.
This was the magical power of
a time out meet up with some
nearest and dearest.
It turns out a much needed
catch up with a best friend was exactly what the
doctor ordered.
Maybe it was the environment, a relaxed brunch
is always nice and we now have a new favourite
location - always good to try something new!
Maybe it was the listening ear… it was great to be
reassured I wasn’t going mad.
But it’s also good to remember another opinion can
create a different perspective on something.
It also helped that we moved on to discuss anything
and everything else too.
Not only does this take our mind off things, but it’s
a case of remembering a lot else exists apart from
what we are feeling down about.
OCTOBER OCTOBER 2018 | ISSUE 2018 | #72 ISSUE | #72 HISTORY
Hotel de Paris
Cromer...
The hotel sits on top
of the cliffs looking
down on Cromer’s
Victorian pier. By
the end of the 1700s
there were under 700
occupants’ in Cromer
along with three
public houses, the
King’s Head, the New
Inn and the Red Lion.
There was a hotel of which
the name is a distant memory,
but it was owned by Mrs
Sanderson. The Hotel de Paris
was built on land that had at
one stage been a large home
owned by Lord Suffield.
The property and the land
were purchased by Pierre le
Françoise who at a young age
was brought to England by his
aristocratic father Baron del
Barr after escaping the French
Revolution. Hotel de Paris
became a success and Pierre
passed away in 1841 and is
buried in the parish church. His
widow stayed there until 1845
and then it was sold to local
businessmen Henry Jarvis and
both he and his son Alex were
very successful in running the
hotel and built a third floor.
By the time Cromer had a train
station built in 1887 the town
grew in size.
Many of the other hotel’s
closed and Alex Jarvis saw
a great opportunity to build
a new hotel on the site and
employed the services of the
great architect George Skipper.
Skipper chose to incorporate
some of the original style
for the hotel and added the
designs of the properties of
nearby Albert House. Building
was undertaken by J Smith
of Norwich who would later
become the president of the
Norwich Master Builders.
Advised by his doctor in 1892
to stay in Norfolk due to the
pure air, Oscar Wilde rented
a farmhouse in the area
and also stayed at the hotel
where he wrote ‘A Women
of No Importance’, where
he probably came up with
the character name of ‘Lady
Hunstanton’. Lord Alfred
Douglas (Bosie) also joined
Wilde but departed early on
hearing that Mrs Wilde was to
join her husband.
1901 saw Arthur Conan Doyle
recuperating in Cromer from
enteric fever and staying at the
hotel enjoying local stories of
the legend of ‘Black Shuck’.
Doyle moved the location to
Dartmoor and chose the title
‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’.
In archives of the Register for
Aliens for the hotel show the
years 1919 and 1920 where the
register was signed by many
foreign guests even though a
high percentage lived in Britain.
1961 saw the Jarvis family sell
the hotel to Norwich builder
Mr Bush who did much work
on the hotel to bring it up to
date. Mr Bush died in 1972
and the hotel was sold to a
London based company. It has
been a listed Grade II building
since 1977 and is a part of Alfa
Travel’s Leisureplex Group.
During a recent photoshoot,
model Nakita Ramos posed
outside the hotel and a
photo showed a strange glow
by Nakita’s face. Further
developments showed a
strange face looking down
from one of the hotel
windows.
This really WORKS...
This Works® - recommended by Victoria Beckham...
When you hear of products claiming all
the amazing things they are, making them
sound like some sort of a magic potion,
you wouldn’t be blamed to think, does it
really do all of that?
Well, to quote Victoria Beckham ‘This does
work’ about ‘This Works®’ in ‘Transit
Camera Close Up’.
It is a mask, moisturiser and
primer all in one. Never has
my make up stayed on as
flawlessly as when using
this! You can use it around
your eye area, you can even
feel your skin tightening and
lifting.
After using it my skin is glowing, my tone
has evened out, looks plump, hydrated
and youthful. This is a miracle product that
actually does work!
Now, I know you must be thinking, Victoria
Beckham loves it, well it will be stupid
amounts of money… your wrong! It’s
available for just £30! I have not met one
person yet who doesn’t love this once they
tried it.
The other piece of advice to good skin I
will give is to get a good nights sleep!
‘This Works®’ Sleep Plus Pillow spray is a
fast acting natural remedy to help restore
your normal sleep pattern.
It was tested on 200 people with
sleep problems and a massive 89%
of ex-prescription drug uses said
they would use sleep plus instead
of prescriptions! A massive 100%
said they would recommend it.
This product has changed my life!
Remember, good skin starts with a
good nights sleep.
Why a wrap?... lumafirm ®
Body wraps are the perfect body
‘pick-me-up’, and they are not just
for summer.
As we start to move deeper into Autumn and
towards winter, skin needs intense hydration.
We tend to focus on the face rather than
the body, and that is the area most often
neglected and in need of some TLC.
Having a wrap is not often a first choice when
we visit a spa/salon. Usually the client chooses
something more traditional such as a facial or
massage, however think of a wrap as a facial
for the body.
It can come across as a slightly
intimidating treatment to have,
as it does involve wearing a pair
of paper knickers, however, your
modesty is protected and the
therapist will keep you covered
when necessary throughout
the treatment. There are many
benefits when it comes to
having a wrap, which do outweigh the paper
knickers!
Skin will look and feel nourished, smoother,
toned and, with specific detox wraps, lose
a few inches too. Having a wrap shouldn’t
be intimidating, it’s a wonderful relaxing
experience offering something for all body
types. Exfoliation, massage and hydrating
moisturisers all combine to deliver highlyvisible
results.
At SK, all the wrap treatments are from the
world-renowned Pevonia range, the most
popular being the lumafirm® Firm & Glow Body
Wrap.
This is enriched with 26 dynamic ingredients
including an exclusive combination of
anti-ageing extracts; the latest in peptides,
and amazing liposomic technology. Deeply
repairing, hydrating, smoothing and de-ageing,
what is not to love about this wrap?!
As with all Pevonia products and
spa treatments, the body wraps
are eco-friendly, ethically created
and free from alcohol, SLS, urea,
formaldehyde, artificial fragrances,
synthetic dyes, mineral oil and
parabens.
Every moment of this sensual spa
wrap is comfortingly natural and
designed with the health of your skin and the
environment in mind.
Why not try one sooner rather than later? If
you book a lumafirm® Lift & Glow facial, you
get the wrap for free. We promise, once you
have experienced it and seen the results, you
will most definitely want more.
OCTOBER 2018 | ISSUE #72
The Mystery Product We May Be Overlooking...
Toner is the mystery product in our skincare
routine that many people don’t really know why
they should use.
Here we show you what toner is, how it can help
your skin and what is available so that you can
make an informed decision.
What is toner?
Toner is a fast penetrating astringent liquid
that when applied causes the contraction
of skin cells and pores generally used to
reduce the overproduction of oil in the
skin and improve its condition.
Often used as part of a skincare routine and
an additional cleansing step before a
moisturiser is applied.
What are the benefits?
A thorough cleanse with a good toner helps to
• Target breakouts
• Remove daily dirt and grime, including make up
• Remove dead skin cells
• Tighten pores
• Restore the balance of skins PH level
• Reduce the level of excess oil on the skin
• Some may mattify the skin
A good toner will cleanse the skin to allow nutrient
rich ingredients to nourish the skin.
Top toner tip – Sweep toner across your face,
neck and décolletage then leave the toner to
soak in without touching the skin before applying
moisturiser or any other products.
Which toner should I use?
Applying Toner
Skincare is advancing all the time and there are so many
now available. I’ll use the Urban Veda range as an example.
They have formulated 4 different toners to suit your
specific skin type; Oil prone skin, sensitive skin, dull or dry
skin and mature skin. So there is a toner to suit you.
The purifying toner is designed for oil prone skin and will
detoxify congested skin as its an antibacterial, clarifying
toner which will give you a refreshed, clear complexion.
Botanical extracts helps to mattify shiny t-zones and
reduce the appearance of spots, balancing sebum
production.
The soothing toner helps to clarify and refresh sensitive
skin while locking in moisture and gently cleansing without
altering the skin’s protective hydrolipidic film. Using myrrh
which relieves skin conditions such as eczema, calming
sandalwood, cooling aloe vera and skin tone-improving
orange.
There are a couple of methods to applying
toner, some like to splash on the toner and
dab into the skin whereas others prefer to
apply toner with a cotton pad. Personally
the latter is my preference so that the toner
can remove any residue from the cleanser
easily.
Remember to apply toner to your face,
neck and décolletage both morning and
night for long term results. The night time
application will complete the cleansing
of the skin, ensuring you sleep with clean
skin. In the morning it will remove sebum
produced during the night and balance
your skin’s pH. Written by Sarah Gare.
The radiance toner uses a complexion-enhancing
hydrating formula to remove all traces of makeup and
remaining cleanser while it balances the pH level of your
skin. It is particularly beneficial to dry, dehydrated and
dull complexions. It’s also great for balancing skin tone,
including those struggling with hyper pigmentation.
The reviving Hydrating toner is designed to revitalise and
refresh tired and mature skin by to removing all traces of
cleanser, locking in moisture and balancing the pH level of
the skin. Enriched with bio oils to improve elasticity and
restore suppleness. Gently removing impurities and dulling
debris with clarifying flower waters, fortified with vitamins
and plant extracts to help reduce the appearance of scars
and soothe dry skin.
When should I use toner?
Often there is a time limit for how long to keep a product
on your skin for best results and toner is no different. It is
said that you should apply a toner no later than a minute
after you have cleansed your skin.
I know that sounds very precise but it is scientifically
proven that most ingredients penetrate the skin better
when it is wet.
OCTOBER OCTOBER 2018 | 2018 ISSUE | ISSUE #72 #72 | FREYA ROY
FREYA ROY
Neo-Soul/Nu-Jazz artist, with the vision to change the perception of
women in music, calls out for support to crowd fund debut album...
Described my Blues Matters
Magazine as ‘A talented young
performer making a lot of people
sit up’, Norwich-based Freya Roy is
about to record her debut album,
exploring jazz, neo-soul, R&B and
hip-hop.
A recent graduate
from Leeds College of
Music, studying Jazz
Composition and Music
Production, Roy has
previously released 2
independent EPs under
her label, FCR Music, as
well as a documentary
exploring the issues
faced by women and
minorities in the music and creative
industries.
Fortunate to receive funding from Leeds
College of Music’s Artist Development
Scheme, Roy can begin to work with a top
mix engineer, Dom Howard (Submotion
Orchestra/Ruckspin) and top UK jazz
musicians.
Freya expresses, “My mission is to grow
my label, FCR Music, as a platform that
works to inspire and empower industry
minorities.”
“Pushing forward a message that is
prevalent within this album: to break the
persistent gender stereotype within music
and the creative industries, pushing for the
destruction of the hidden
barriers faced by women and
LGBTQ+ artists, particularly
within production, jazz and
its sister genres”.
“I will be truly happy if I can
achieve this goal and present
to you all my best work yet.
Even as little as a few pounds
from backers will help push
me towards my £1k goal.”
Find out more and help fund this project
by making a contribution or pre-ordering
the album now on digital, CD and vinyl:
http://igg.me/at/freyaroy
However, this is only enough to get her half
way in the recording process.
This is a call out from your generosity at
home to back Freya’s campaign to raise
£1k before November 15 th .
THE AUTUMN CHILL SETS IN
BY KATE LINES
Kates Top Tip : It’s your last chance to trim
deciduous hedges to keep them looking tidy
over the winter
Now that autumn has arrived, grass
grows much slower so there’s no
need to cut your lawn.
If however it is mild and you need to mow,
change your mower to a higher cut. The lawn
is particularly susceptible to the damage of the
larvae of the daddy longlegs at this time of the
year, they eat the roots of the grass. Use a leather
jacket killer to prevent extensive damage.
Planting
October is an excellent time to plant trees, shrubs
and perennials, the soil is warm enough to give
them a good start before winter begins. It is also a
good time to divide perennials that have become
too large. Lift the plant without damaging the roots
and pull the young parts away from the old plant.
They can then be replanted. Plant winter flowering
plants in the border such as ornamental cabbage or
pansies. Bulbs can also be planted in borders or pots.
Indoors
You can have flowering plants as early as December
if you plant tulips or hyacinths so that the tops are
level with the soil. Crocus need to be planted a few
centimetres deeper and narcissi should protrude
slightly above the soil. Place the bowls or pots in the
cool (12deg) for about 8 weeks.
5. Plant out spring cabbages
8. Order seeds for next year
9. Last chance to mow lawns and trim hedges in
FENCING CLUB
BY ROSS “ACTION MAN” WISHART
Fencing is one of only fivr sports
that has featured in every modern
Olympic Games since Athens
1896. it’s exciting, fast-paced,
swashbuckling action has always
enthralled me even though I had no
experience nor understanding of
the rules.
Based at the County Upper School, Bury
St Edmunds (IP32 6RF), they meet every
Tuesday evening from 7pm.
Now Action Man is normally ready to be
thrust (no pun intended), into the deep
end however on this occasion I didn’t
have the equipment but thankfully the
club has plenty of kit available.
This is where the workout began because
there are many layers and pieces of
apparatus required, the body wire runs
under the clothing connecting to your
weapon for scoring, the plastron is a one
armed garment worn under the jacket
on your sword arm for extra protection,
Breeches and long socks then there’s the
jacket and Lame (metal conductive jacket
for scoring) and finally the gloves and all
important mask.
Fully decked out and ready to go Owen
ran me through some movements.
Firstly the footwork, very similar to boxing
(as featured in last month’s Bounce),
with a slight squat your lead foot in front
at all times you shuffle forwards and
backwards, little sidewards movements
114

OCTOBER 2018 | ISSUE #72
SPORT
as the “piste” (playing area) is no more
that 2 metres wide. Then we moved on to
our swordsmanship, the “lunge” is your
attack where your thrust
your weapon and lunge with
your front leg towards your
opponent.
The “parry” is to push your
opponent’s blade away from
you and a combination of
the two where you defend
an attack and then a counter
is a parry-reposte (French for respond).
We were practicing the foil discipline
where just the torso is the target area
(Saber - upper body including arms and
face, Epee - whole body) if both swords
strike simultaneously the point is awarded
to the aggressor under the “right of
way” law unless as a defender you have
successfully parry-reposte, hence the need
for a referee. Now, time to put my new
skills to the test, many of which completely
escaped me when someone ran at me
with a sword!
However, I was able to gain
some composure and get the
immensely satisfying feeling of a
strike or “touch” occasionally.
The whole evening was great fun and
I highly recommend that anyone who
has contemplated giving Fencing a go to
get in touch with the Bury St Edmunds
Fencing Club via their Facebook page and
pay them a visit.
Action Man says: Undecided? Get
off the fence! Go fence with Bury
St Edmunds Fencing Club.
CLARE FREE
MUSIC
Clare Free is considered by many
to be the finest female blues
guitarist/vocalists in the UK today.
With two internationally acclaimed albums,
numerous international tours, international
press coverage and airplay on stations all over
the world there is good reason why Clare is so
highly regarded.
Multi award nominated in The British Blues
Awards, The People’s Music Awards and winner
of the WRC ‘Best Acoustic Performance’ Clare
is a passionate songwriter.
In the autumn of 2018 Clare returns to the
studio to record her third electric album with
Craig Bacon on Drums (Gloria Gaynor/Avril
Lavigne etc) and Jimmi Clarke on bass (Gloria
Gaynor/ Bjorn Again/Pee Wee Ellis etc.)
Clare served her time with bands including
Misdemeanor (With Matt Schofield, Gini
Hobson, Maurice McElroy and Constance
Redgrave of Spikedriver fame) she guested
with Larry Garner and joined Dana Gillespie
on two trips, one to India and the other to be
the opening act at the Mustique Blues Festival
every night for three weeks. Later Clare joined
the band 99lbs. Then, having finally made the
decision to go it alone, she released her debut
album “Be Who You Are,” in February 2010. The
self-penned mixture of rock, country and blues
propelled her into the limelight with excellent
reviews in the UK and the USA.
In September 2010, she released the live EP
“How It Is,” a four track CD of Clare’s own
songs. It also received rave reviews and the
limited edition copies sold out quickly. All four
tracks from the EP reached the blues top ten
with the international distributor CD Baby in the
same week. One track (Funky Mama’s Kitchen
Blues) reached the final in both the British Blues
Awards (Kevin Thorpe Award for the Best New UK
Blues Song) and the People’s Music Awards (Best
Pop/Rock Song) She won the WRC Award “Best
Acoustic Performance of 2011” and 2012 saw her
nominated for Best Female Vocalist in the British
Blues Awards.
In February 2012, Clare released her second album
“Dust and Bones”, again all tracks were written by
Clare and the album received excellent reviews in
the press in the UK, Europe and the USA. The next
three years saw Clare tour extensively playing up
to 100 dates a year both solo and with her band in
the UK and Northern Europe.
In September 2015 Clare released the single
‘Sniper Fire’ which, again, saw excellent reviews in
the press. Then, in November 2015, Clare and her
husband David, welcomed their third baby. Clare
started gigging again in July 2017 and her gig
diary is very busy once again.
Clare has had her music played on BBC Radio
2 and a host of online radio stations all over the
world play her tracks regularly. She has been
featured in Guitar and Bass Magazine, PlayMusic
Magazine, Gear Magazine, Blues in Britain, Blues
Matters, Classic Rock Blues, Blue Monday Monthly
(USA), Blues News Norway, Guitar International
Magazine and more. On top of this she’s made
countless live radio appearances.
Recently she has was made the patron of a new
venue, The 61, in Lixhe, Belgium. For a more
Archie’s
Adventures
ROAD TRIP TO YORKSHIRE...
My adventures have been extra
special this month, as I have made a
new best bud called Murphy.
He’s a Border Collie – they say they are the most
intelligent of dogs (and have loads of energy),
they may be right as I just couldn’t keep up with
him, especially with my bloomin’ little legs. Uff!
Luckily, Murph and me hit it off straight away,
(even though I kept trying to eat his food, he
seemed to have a forgiving spirit). If you are
planning to introduce your doggy pals here are a
few of my top tips to help along the way:
Have the dogs meet on their leads…
Keep this meeting on neutral territory, (in my
case a new house we were visiting). Have both
dogs on-lead. Take the dogs for a walk together,
keeping 10 feet between them so that they
can’t greet each other or stare. The idea is to
acclimate them to each other’s presence without
causing tension.
prevent fighting and injuries, and to prevent your
new dog from developing behaviour like chewing
and house soiling (major tell-off)!
Work to prevent conflict…
While dogs can settle minor disputes with
each other (such as growling the other off of
a toy or their own food bowl - yep my bad),
they shouldn’t be limiting each other’s access
to you, your family or common areas of the
home. Reward polite behavior and manage
the environment to prevent conflicts from
developing.
I can’t wait to see Murphy again, hopefully in the
not to distant future!
Follow me on Insta @official_archies_
adventures. You can also keep up to date with
my antics on Twitter @bouncearchie.
Let them get to know each other slowly and
carefully…
Don’t rush it, us dogs will find our own way to
work things out but this may take patience!
Keep the dogs separate while you are away…
Either in separate rooms or crates. This is both to
