No Failure Only Feedback...
When we don’t achieve something, or
something hasn’t gone according to
plan, for example you didn’t get the
promotion you were after or achieve
the grades you wanted.
We tend to take it personally and say to ourselves
that we’ve failed, but have we?
I think we can all learn something from Edison,
I know I certainly have, there is no failure, only
feedback. If something doesn’t go our way, or we
don’t achieve what we set out to do, it doesn’t
mean failure. Learn from the experience to help
you move forward and stop it from knocking your
confidence.
What Can I Learn?
When we perceive ourselves to have “failed”
it can affect our confidence and self-esteem,
normally at times when we need a confidence
boost rather than a knock.
I have many clients, when looking back over
their lives, beat themselves up because of
past mistakes or decisions they made at the
time.
A scientist treats failure differently, good job or
else we wouldn’t have half the things we do, like
the light bulb. It took Edison over 1,000 attempts
to create the lightbulb. A reporter asked Edison
how it felt to fail one thousand times and Edison
replied:
“I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an
invention with 1,000 steps”.
I point out to them, that at that time they didn’t
have all the information that they have access
to now, and they wouldn’t intentionally make a
mistake.
So, when looking back, say to yourself “what can
I learn” rather than “I should have…” or “I could
of have…”. Remember, there is no failure only
feedback.
