SPORT
as the “piste” (playing area) is no more
that 2 metres wide. Then we moved on to
our swordsmanship, the “lunge” is your
attack where your thrust
your weapon and lunge with
your front leg towards your
opponent.
The “parry” is to push your
opponent’s blade away from
you and a combination of
the two where you defend
an attack and then a counter
is a parry-reposte (French for respond).
We were practicing the foil discipline
where just the torso is the target area
(Saber - upper body including arms and
face, Epee - whole body) if both swords
strike simultaneously the point is awarded
to the aggressor under the “right of
way” law unless as a defender you have
successfully parry-reposte, hence the need
for a referee. Now, time to put my new
skills to the test, many of which completely
escaped me when someone ran at me
with a sword!
However, I was able to gain
some composure and get the
immensely satisfying feeling of a
strike or “touch” occasionally.
The whole evening was great fun and
I highly recommend that anyone who
has contemplated giving Fencing a go to
get in touch with the Bury St Edmunds
Fencing Club via their Facebook page and
pay them a visit.
