ROAD TRIP TO YORKSHIRE...
My adventures have been extra
special this month, as I have made a
new best bud called Murphy.
He’s a Border Collie – they say they are the most
intelligent of dogs (and have loads of energy),
they may be right as I just couldn’t keep up with
him, especially with my bloomin’ little legs. Uff!
Luckily, Murph and me hit it off straight away,
(even though I kept trying to eat his food, he
seemed to have a forgiving spirit). If you are
planning to introduce your doggy pals here are a
few of my top tips to help along the way:
Have the dogs meet on their leads…
Keep this meeting on neutral territory, (in my
case a new house we were visiting). Have both
dogs on-lead. Take the dogs for a walk together,
keeping 10 feet between them so that they
can’t greet each other or stare. The idea is to
acclimate them to each other’s presence without
causing tension.
prevent fighting and injuries, and to prevent your
new dog from developing behaviour like chewing
and house soiling (major tell-off)!
Work to prevent conflict…
While dogs can settle minor disputes with
each other (such as growling the other off of
a toy or their own food bowl - yep my bad),
they shouldn’t be limiting each other’s access
to you, your family or common areas of the
home. Reward polite behavior and manage
the environment to prevent conflicts from
developing.
I can’t wait to see Murphy again, hopefully in the
not to distant future!
Let them get to know each other slowly and
carefully…
Don’t rush it, us dogs will find our own way to
work things out but this may take patience!
Keep the dogs separate while you are away…
Either in separate rooms or crates. This is both to
