THE AUTUMN CHILL SETS IN

Kates Top Tip : It’s your last chance to trim
deciduous hedges to keep them looking tidy
over the winter
Now that autumn has arrived, grass
grows much slower so there’s no
need to cut your lawn.
If however it is mild and you need to mow,
change your mower to a higher cut. The lawn
is particularly susceptible to the damage of the
larvae of the daddy longlegs at this time of the
year, they eat the roots of the grass. Use a leather
jacket killer to prevent extensive damage.
Planting
October is an excellent time to plant trees, shrubs
and perennials, the soil is warm enough to give
them a good start before winter begins. It is also a
good time to divide perennials that have become
too large. Lift the plant without damaging the roots
and pull the young parts away from the old plant.
They can then be replanted. Plant winter flowering
plants in the border such as ornamental cabbage or
pansies. Bulbs can also be planted in borders or pots.
Indoors
You can have flowering plants as early as December
if you plant tulips or hyacinths so that the tops are
level with the soil. Crocus need to be planted a few
centimetres deeper and narcissi should protrude
slightly above the soil. Place the bowls or pots in the
cool (12deg) for about 8 weeks.
