editorial
Welcome to our new issue of the Global Reggae Charts magazine!
While in the northern hemisphere autumn comes closer day by day, this means most of the musicians
are heading back to the studio, to create new music and make plans for the future. Behind
closed door managers, booking agents, and festival promoters are starting to prepare for the festival
season 2019, which still feels light years away – given the fact that summer is not yet fully over,
but from a managing point of view it will be here faster than may be preferable. Anyway, for we
consumers of reggae and dancehall music, it is a good time since we can expect a lot of new music.
If you are following our “New Reggae Releases” playlist on Spotify, you’ll find that the number
of new tunes is getting much higher again, compared to the summer months.
This you can find beginning on the charts as well. On the album charts we have new entries from
our feature artist Mr. Vegas (“Ism”), E.N Young (“Forest Wilderness”), Alpha Blondy (”Human
Race”), and Nat Birchall & Al Breadwinner (”Sounds Almighty”). On the single charts, we have
new entries from Lika Iké (”Second Chance”), Capital Letters (”The Roots”), Black Roots (”Take It”),
Csavi and Sly & Robbie (”Gone Again”), and Skip Marley (”Johnny Was”). When we are looking at
the riddim charts, we find three of the five places with new entries.
Besides the single, album, and riddim charts, you can find two voter interviews this month in the
magazine. We had a quick talk with Sista Selecta from Australia, who presents her “Roots‘n’Reggae
Show” on the local 2BOB radio station. Additionally, the show gets syndicated through the
community radio network and can be heard on stations all over Australia. The second voter we’ve
talked to is Teo Rootical. He is the singer of the band Rootical Foundation and presents his “Reggae
Corner” on a local station in Italy, called Radio Magenta.
Now we wish you an interesting study of the charts and the magazine.
All the best,
Felix
COMMUNITY
RADIO
Italy
global reggae charts
featured voter
INTERVIEW
This month we feature two of our voters from different
parts of the world. First we have Teo Rootical, who presents
his show “Reggae Corner“ on a community radio
station called Radio Magenta in Italy.
Global Reggae Charts: Please introduce yourself
and your radio show to our readers!
Teo Rootical: Irie oonu! This is Teo Rootical: first
of all “a reggae passionate man” music and drama
teacher at school, singer of the Italian reggae band
Rootical Foundation, “Stand Up for Jamaica” human
rights activist, and radio speaker and selecter.
My radio show on Radio Magenta FM 92.2 (Milan) is
called ”Reggae Corner“: a weekly event dedicated to
reggae music in its different shades.
GRC: What made you fall in love with reggae?
GRC: How did you get into radio and what is your
motivation?
TR: I fell in love with reggae music when I was a
juvenile. I was captured by its hypnotic rhythm, its
powerful basslines, its righteous message within the
lyrics. I started listening to roots and culture by the
unforgettable Jamaican legends, and then I went on
discovering all different versions and genres, from
foundation to dub, from digital to dancehall, and so
on…
TR: I got into radio when I was a teenager, more
than 20 years ago. I loved the idea to deal with
music and to talk to the people directly but not in
an invasive way: radio is an evergreen media which
allows people to listen to music and words while
doing what they want, without being fixed in front
of a screen; radio lets listeners be free and encourages
imagination and meditation.
GRC: Could you give your view on the Italian reggae
scene? How is reggae doing in Italy these days?
TR: The Italian reggae scene is still lively and productive:
some of our bands, singers, and producers
are appreciated and respected in the wholeof Europe
and beyond. At the moment, reggae is not one of
the favourite popular genres (it has never been main
stream at all), but still resist in dancehall nights in
the cities, sound system gatherings, open airs, and
live concerts. We lost “Rototom Sunsplash” which
relocated in Spain in 2010, but we still have lot of
festivals dedicated to reggae, from north to south.
global reggae charts | issue 17 / oct 2018
GRC: What spectrum of music do you play in your
show and which artists have you found most inspiring
lately?
TR: I try to represent and boss up all kinds of shades
related to reggae music. First of all, I prefer to select
Italian and European productions, without forgetting
Jamaican fresh tunes and releases. I look always for
original music, trying to suggest to my crowd valiant
artists that deserve to be known. My first love was
roots and culture, then new roots and now reggae
revival: I love Jamaican singers and bands such as
Protoje, Kabaka Pyramid, Chronixx, Damian Marley,
featured voter
and Morgan Heritage. Regarding the European scene,
I like Dub Incorporation, Gentleman, and Seeed;
and for Italy, Mellow Mood, Raphael, Lion D, and
many more.
GRC: You are a musician yourself. How does your
own musical activity influence your choice of music
for your show and vice versa?
TR: My musical activity with Rootical Foundation often
gives me the possibility to personally meet and
share the stage and my passion with lots of artists
and musicians. It’s nice to compare and reason with
other people taking up a similar artistic path. So I
am always looking for high level productions, good
well-done music. Vice versa, I take inspiration from
what I listen to and play for my crowd on the radio,
trying to be open to new sounds, influences, and
evolutions.
Mr. Vegas
The official press release for his new album starts with
“Mr. Vegas has made a name for himself within the dancehall
and reggae genres and with the release of his new album Ism is
showing the world the evolution of his artistry.” Proving his detractors
wrong time after time, Mr. Vegas is definitely a versatile artist
who has written plenty of super hits since his breakthrough twenty
years ago. So it is only fair to grant him the “Artist of the Month”
honor for October.
COMMUNITY
RADIO
INTERVIEW
The second voter we feature this month is Sista Selecta.
She presents her ”Roots’n’Reggae Show“ on the
community radio station 2BOB Radio and through the
community radio network in Australia.
Global Reggae Charts: Please introduce yourself
and your radio show to our readers.
Sista Selecta: Greetings from “Down Under”! My
name is Sista Selecta and I’ve hosted an Australian
Community Radio program called the “Roots’n’
Reggae Show” since 2005 out of 2BOB Radio. A onehour
version of the program is also syndicated to
stations around Australia on the Community Broadcasting
Association of Australia’s Community Radio
Network. Situated about 4 hours north of Sydney,
our little station was established in the 1980s by
a group of passionate music lovers and continues
today, still with the man who began the 2BOB Radio
story.
GRC: What made you fall in love with reggae?
Sis.S.: At about 9 years of age, an aunt gave me a
compilation album for Christmas. On it were a couple
of classic reggae tracks featuring Jimmy Cliff and
Dave & Ansel Collins. I loved and played that vinyl
record for years but had no idea that ‘reggae‘ was
a thing. All I knew is that I loved the songs. From
my earliest memories and after attending my first
live music concert, I knew music was going to be a
lifelong passion. Fast forward some years and Bob
Marley & The Wailers entered my orbit. My zeal for
reggae music became apparent after I heard it played
live for the first time some years later at a festival
featuring The Wailers and an Australian band called
Bomba. The sound was simply contagious. I ‘felt‘ it
in every part of me and I was hooked. My devotion
to Aussie and New Zealand reggae expanded exponentially
after seeing and hearing King Tide, The Red
Eyes, Katchafire, Salmonella Dub, The Strides, Trinity
Roots, The Melbourne Ska Orchestra, Kooii,
Kingfisha, Pitch Black, Cornerstone Roots, Fat
Freddy’s Drop, Dubmarine, Oka, Zennith, Blue King
Brown, Mista Savona, and so so many more.
GRC: Could you give your review on the Australian
reggae scene? What is the state of reggae in Australia
today?
Sis.S: Our ‘great southern land‘ enjoys a very
healthy reggae music scene. Our country is a huge
one so naturally the major cities have more on offer
than smaller regional towns. But with the advent
of streaming and all things internet, the world now
comes to our door. Aussies love their live music and
a little festival called Island Vibe has been a standout
for local, Indigenous and visiting artists for many
years. Held on a small island off the coast of Queensland
every October, it celebrates island culture, art
and dance, and plays host to around 80 reggae,
roots, soul, and electronic acts.
GRC: How did you get into radio and what is your
motivation?
SisS: In my youth I wrote a letter to a prominent
radio station asking how I could become a radio
programmer. Never a fan of commercial radio, my favorite
sounds came from late night broadcasts with
more relaxed delivery from the presenters. These
sessions usually focused on more obscure material
from artists not on the ‘marketable‘ spectrum and attracted
my interest much more. After relocating from
Sydney, I discovered 2BOB radio airing alternative
music and some years later, was asked to become
part of the administrative team at the station. One
thing lead to another, and subsequently and unexpectedly,
I became an on-air presenter. It is my belief
that music speaks directly to our souls and is a language
unlike any other. My desire is to spread that
word as far and wide as possible and I’m grateful for
the avenues that have been made available to allow
me to do that.
With so much fabulous music on offer, this task is a
daunting one for me each month. I want to vote for
everything I’ve heard! Trawling through the most
recent releases and making those selections comes
down to what ‘moved‘ me the most and which tunes
became earworms for me. Respect to the other
selectors and to Felix with the Global Reggae Charts
and magazine, your task is a huge one! Give thanks
to you and to the lovers of fine music, and the musicians
who make our world livable.
SisS: Coming from a blues music background and
having an appreciation for many genres, I tend to air
a variety of reggae music styles. Especially of
interest to me are the ones that blend genres. Soul,
blues and jazz reggae, electronic dub reggae,
Caribbean, mento, dancehall and ska, old and
scratchy, new and glitchy … it all encourages me to
go in search of new music and artists to bring to listeners.
I am continually inspired by the music I hear
and infinitely in awe of the musicians who create it.
Of late, I am thoroughly enjoying some of our elder
reggae statesmen through new and remastered material
and have the utmost respect for the richness
they have brought to the reggae arena.
