editorial

Welcome to the first issue of the new year of Global Reggae Charts magazine!

The end of 2018 was certainly a bit hectic for the whole GRC team, so we’re excited to be moving

into 2019. Plenty of great music is currently out, plus there’s a whole year to summarize, so this

issue is strictly focused on the charts!

Our cover this month belongs to the inimitable Jah9, whose mystical and poetic approach to

reggae music continues to impress audiences as well as our voters. Her latest track “Field Trip” is

on the rise, currently sitting at #9.

Other songs of note on the singles chart include Tarrus Riley’s “Guess Who” right at the top, just

ahead of the Alborosie and Chronixx collaboration “Contradiction.” Koffee’s “Toast” in its debut

month, Beres Hammond’s “I’m Alive,” and Lila Iké’s “Second Chance” wrap up the top five. Albo

and Beres join forces on “Too Rock” at #8, Mortimer sits at #10 with “Careful,” plus there’s another

new entry at #14: Ras Demo’s “Dreader Than Dread.”

Of course, the album charts include some of the same names, yet there’s plenty of releases in just

their first month – nine out of the twenty! Lee “Scratch” Perry’s The Black Album is #4; Eesah’s

Masterpiece is #8, with Mykal Rose’s Healing of the Nation just behind, and the Black Roots’ Take

It after that; then it’s Estelle’s Lovers Rock in at #15 followed by Natty Jean’s Imagine (#16) and

Taj Weekes & Adowa’s To All My Relations (#17); finally, Jr Thomas & The Volcanos Rockstone and

Ras Demo x Silly Walks Discotheque wrap things up. Long-standing albums from Protoje, Kabaka

Pyramid, and Reemah continue their relevance, although it’s Alborosie Meets The Wailers United

and Agent Sasco sitting in the top two spots, respectively.

Riddims? Peng Peng Riddim is in at #1, out on Boomrush, while Maximum Sound and Walshy Fire

both broke into the listings. TJ’s Wizzle Riddim hangs on at #5, its fourth month on the chart.

Many thanks and much respect to all our monthly voters and readers… and here’s to another great

year of outstanding reggae releases!

All the best from Colorado, USA,

Anderson

Jah9

Effortlessly blending dub and poetry, Jah9 has been steadily on the

rise within the Jamaican underground scene for over a decade now.

She’s regularly on the GRC charts as well! Known for her lyrical depth

as well as her stylistic versatility, she’s definitely deserving of this

artist of the month feature.

annual charts

Looking back on 2018, both the album and singles charts featured

a host of big names while also allowing the talents of lesser-known

artists to shine through. Obviously by their nature, these charts give a

slight edge to music released earlier within the year; however, there

really are a great variety of acts and styles represented.

The album charts reveal that for every Alborosie there’s a Rorystonelove, for every

Protoje a Reemah, or for every Damian Marley a Mo’Kalamity. Yes, Albo and Protoje

did indeed snag the top two spots, with Kabaka Pyramid, Micah Shemaiah, and Etana

stamping the initial five with plenty of rootical vibes. Jesse Royal, King Kong, Sly &

Robbie Meet Dubmatix, Romain Virgo, and Havana Meets Kingston provide more of an

international mixture within the top ten. Also notable are Hollie Cook in at #12, Mellow

Mood at #14 just ahead of the late great Dennis Brown, Iba Mahr at #18, and Alpheus

at #20. The seemingly unstoppable Alborosie even snuck an acoustic album in at #24!

A true representation of reggae’s changing of the guard is Koffee’s top single of the

year, “Raggamuffin.” The dynamic teenager’s rise has been nothing short of phenomenal,

“Burning” sits at #16 as well, so there’s little to suggest that her 2019 will be

any different. The other top tracks are Alborosie’s “Contradiction” featuring Chronixx,

Capleton’s “Help The Weak” also featuring Chronixx, Protoje’s “No Guarantee” once

again featuring Chronixx, and Beres Hammond’s “I’m Alive.” Definitely shows a true talent

doesn’t need to release an album to make an impact! Following Kabaka Pyramid’s

collaboration with Damian Marley at #6, King Kong’s “Old School” ft. Burro Banton and

Pinchers just edged out an impressive showing from Bryan Art. Lila Iké for “Second

Chance,” and Dre Island for “Yaad N Abraad” conclude the first ten singles. Listing

all fifty would certainly be exhaustive, though artists like Yaadcore (#17 for “No Fenke

Fenke” feat. Shanique Marie & Kabaka Pyramid), our cover artist Jah9 (#19), Linval

Thompson (#23), Bulby York (#27), Cocoa Tea (#31), Samory I (#33), Mojo Morgan (#41),

and Sevana (#50) are well worth a mention here. Plenty more talent on the full chart,

so make sure to read carefully and (re)listen appropriately.
