The Potentate’s Message
Es Selamu Aleikum
Greetings Illustrious Sir’s and Nobles,
Nobles, What Ladies a year 2018 and Friends: has been so far! September was a full month with a great time at
Virginia Beach. It was wonderful to see so many Nobles and their families enjoying
their time at the beach. Rajah Shrine was well represented in the MASA parade and
walked away with five trophies. The 68th Pretzel Bowl was a great game with beautiful
weather and the Sportsmen’s Raffle was another success this year. Thank you all for
your support of these events.
October begins with the Pote’s trip to Salem, Massachusetts and a stop at the
Shriner’s Boston Hospital. October 20th will be the annual Divan Ladies Jewelry
and Fashion event which benefits the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Tickets for
this worthwhile and fun event can be bought from any Divan or Aide’s Lady. It’s an
excellent day for the ladies to see the latest fashion trends and win some jewelry. We
look forward to seeing you there.
November will be the Pote’s Testimonial you are welcome to come out and roast or toast me. The opportunity to serve as your
Potentate has been remarkable, rewarding and humbling. You are welcome to come out and let everyone know what I did well, or
maybe not so well, in 2018.
Lastly, December 8th will be Rajah Shrine’s full Ceremonial. The cast is being assembled, and we are
looking forward to a special day. If there is a master mason out there that you think would make a good
Shriner get their petition into the office; it’s never too early.
Yours in the Faith,
Illustrious Sir Jared R. Kichline, Potentate
There were plenty of picnics and outings this summer, hope you had an opportunity to
attend a few of them. There is nothing like sitting around shooting the bull, having some
camel’s milk and enjoying the company of the Nobles. Speaking of that, if you missed the
Potentate’s Picnic you missed a fun day. This was the first time that it was held at the Rajah
Complex. It rained some in the morning, as it had been doing almost every day, but the
afternoon brought sunshine and blue skies. There were a few glitches, being the first time at
the Complex, but overall it was a great day. Thanks to all the Nobles and Ladies that helped
with the many jobs that had to be done to make it a success. A big thanks to Nobles Joel
Franco and Jeremy Smith for pulling everything together. A huge thank you to Illustrious
Sir Jared for getting behind this project and helping to make it what it was.
Rajah Shriners meet Kechi Okwuchi, America’s Got
Talent star and Shriners Children’s Hospitals patient
While at the Imperial sessions in Daytona Beach this July,
Oriental Guide Kraig Leiby and Greg Lewis,
PP, had the opportunity to spend some time
with Kechi Okwuchi.
For those of you who don’t know of
Kechi Okwuchi, her story is inspiring.
In 2005, 16-year-old Kechie survived a
plane crash that killed all but two passengers.
She suffered severe burns over 65% of her
body.
Due to the severity of her condition,
officials at the Shell Hospital in Nigeria
referred her to the Shriners Hospitals for
Children Burn Center in Galveston, Texas.
Kechi was treated at the hospital for five years.
During that time, she had more than 100 surgeries
including skin grafts and reconstruction. A big
part of her recovery process was music therapy.
Her first ever singing performance was on the
stage at the Galveston Shriners Hospital in front
of fellow patients, staff, and family.
Kechi has since gone on to sing for America’s Got Talent with millions of
television viewers. She received a standing ovation and the judges were moved
to tears by her performances. She made it all the way to the final five.
Building on that success, Kechi is now recording and currently has a single
out titled “Don’t You Dare.” It’s available on YouTube, Spotify and many
other platforms. Kechi also has become a popular motivational speaker. Her
website is www.kechiofficial.com
“Kechi’s story is not only moving but she is so kind and inspirational to
others,” commented Kraig Leiby. He went on to say, “She kept thanking the
Shriners for what we do!”
Greg Lewis noted “that although our personal contact with Kechi was
brief, I had the opportunity to speak with her about her time at Shriners
Hospital. She told me of the wonderful people she had met and owes
much of her success to the Shriners and enjoys performing in front of live
audiences.”
Her story was recently featured on NBC’s Today show. During her
interview, Kechi said that the care she received at the Shriners Hospital
gave her the independence and confidence to move on with her life.
Kechi Okwuchi is a wonderful example of a Shriners Hospitals for
Children patient making the most of the innovative care she received and embracing a no
limits attitude.
Rajah Shrine participates in the NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
The Rajah Shrine Complex was the site of the Northern Berks Regional Police Department’s
National Night Out on August 7th. The National Night Out is an annual community-building
campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. This
is the 35th year for the National Night Out program. 1,600 communities across the country
participated in the event.
This was the first time the Northern Berks Regional Police Department has staged the event
and by all measures. “It was a resounding success” said Chief Brian Horner.
Noble Sam Beam,
who is on the organizing
committee, said that there
were 38 vendors and 4 fire
departments on site and it
was attended, in somewhat
rainy weather, by over
1,200 people.
There was free food,
drinks, music, kid’s
activities, and fireworks.
LEHIGH SHRINE CLUB
Fellow Nobles, greetings from the Nobles and Ladies of the Lehigh Shrine Club.
Summer is behind us and I think we are all ready for some cooler weather.
As I write this article, MASA is only a few days away. It is always a treat to attend and enjoy the fun
and fellowship of our great Fraternity. Hope to see many of our Nobles there next week.
Our Annual Interclub Night was held at the Lehigh Lodge on Wednesday evening, August 8th. There
were 40 Nobles in attendance, including our Potentate and several Members of the Divan. This is the “all
you can eat” event of the year. The Nobles feasted on fried eggs and ham, fried potatoes, corn on the cob,
salad with bacon dressing and fresh tomato slices. Dessert was apple pie a la mode. No on EVER leaves
Roger C. Reis
this event hungry. Lots of camel’s milk and frivolity made for a great time.
We appreciate the hospitality of Lehigh Lodge for letting us use their facility.
We took in a new member. Noble Dennis Guignet Sr. was unanimously approved for membership. And “yes” Noble Dennis ;
that second VP position we spoke of is still available.
Our next meeting is Wednesday, October 3rd at the Brass Rail. Ladies are invited. Our speaker will be Noble Guy Bieber, 33rd,
whose topic will be a story of the Old West.
One final reminder to save the date of October 10 for our Annual Golf Outing, ably run by Past President Noble Ronald
Neimeyer. Good food - Good golf - Good price!
Remember to support your Clubs and Units. Without member participation, we will cease to exist.
As always, it’s GREAT to be a Shriner!!!!
RAJAH CHANTERS
The Rajah Chanters are BACK……and again we are the winners in both the large group singers of the
Mid-Atlantic Shrine Chanters Association competition and the winners of the first-place trophy for the best
showing in the annual MASA Parade on Saturday, Sept. 8th.
Unfortunately, our small group of singers placed 3rd in the competition, but we are still very proud of
the excellent work we all did in representing Rajah Shrine.
A big pat on the back is due our Director/Conductor/Accompanist, Noble Bruce Rohrbach for the
EXCELLENT job he did of handling all of the above in a masterful way. Bruce is a large part of why we
did so well as he is very patient and considerate when leading this group of amateur singers. Bruce always
goes above and beyond what is expected to make us sound great and he did it again.
We also scored big at the MASCA meeting when we saluted the outgoing President, Noble Dan
Heffelfinger and installed Noble Dave DeTurk to the position of Second Vice-President of this association. We want to thank Dan
for a job well done and we wish David well on his assent to the top spot in a few years.
Coming up, we have a couple of singing engagements on the docket and we will be participating in several parades this fall and
early winter. Look for us at a parade near you and be sure to hoot and holler as we pass by.
Within the very near future, we will be announcing the time, date and details of the Rajah Chanter Holiday Concert. We will
be passing this information onto you shortly, as details are still being finalized as this notice goes to press. Check local listings for
time, place and date.
If your business group, social club or other organization is in need entertainment, just get in touch with any of the Rajah Chanters
and we’ll set you in the right direction; we’d love to sing for you.
Speaking of which, if you like to sing and have a good time, this is your invitation to join us. We rehearse Mondays at 7 in the
All-Purpose Meeting Room at Rajah Shrine. See you there.
Ill. Sir
Greg Lewis, PP
PROVOST GUARD
Lots has happened since our last report in the Rajah News regarding the Provost Guard.
We had a fine showing at the Pote’s Picnic in August, as many of our members came out to help park
the cars of the picnic-goers.A few days later we were back at the Rajah Complex to assist well over one
thousand visitors for the National Night Out.
Many of the visitors came from Maidencreek and Ontelaunee Townships, Blandon and surrounding
areas to celebrate a grand night out including food and beverages and a spectacular fireworks display.
Despite the rain and clouds, a good time was had by all, and the hundreds of positive comments we
received regarding our facility and the hospitality shown by the Rajah Shriners added to the success of the
night.
From Berks County to Virginia Beach we traveled and once again the Mid-Atlantic Shrine Association held a very successful
convention in hosting the 25 member temples, their families and guests.
The parade on Saturday, September 8th was a big success, and most of us got out before the big storm hit the Virginia coastline.
We are happy to report that our President, Dennis Loch was elected and installed Lieutenant Colonel of the Mid-Atlantic
Shrine Provost Guard Association. Noble Dennis will serve for a year in that capacity before assuming the top spot next year.
Congratulations Noble Dennis.
Also, another member of the Provost Guard was honored in Virginia Beach as Noble Mike Quinn, Rajah Shrine Parade Marshal
was awarded a 3rd Place trophy for this showing in the MASA parade. Congratulations, Noble Mike.
We were also happy to serve our Potentate Jared and Rajah Shrine while assisting at the Rajah reserved parking lot for the 68th
annual Pretzel Bowl on Saturday, September 15th and at the Rajah Sportsman’s Raffle as we parked another record number of
vehicles at the South End Gun Club for this annual event.
As you read this, don’t forget the biggest feast of the year, the Provost Guard All-You-Care-To-Eat Spaghetti Dinner is on
Saturday, October 13th at the Rajah Shrine Complex. So, come one, come ALL, just $7.00 per person, eat-in or take-out, it’s your
choice, but don’t miss it. Tickets are available at the door. We’ll be serving from 3-7 p.m. Desserts will be available for purchase.
LEGION OF HONOR
At ease Nobles,
There is a bit of disturbing news that has come to the attention of your humble Adjutant. A Legion
Noble and his Lady showed up for the Pote’s Ball on August 4th. Nothing out of the ordinary here except
the Ball was on August 11th. Exactly one week later. I was asked not to make a big deal of this incident
and I promised I wouldn’t say a word. So please don’t repeat this. If only our Commander would have
checked his calendar book this wouldn’t have occurred! Please don’t feel chagrined, Commander, I’m sure
somewhere, some place another Noble showed up a week early for an event………or maybe not.
Coming up in October is our Past Commander’s Night. We would like ALL Past Commanders to present
yourselves on October 9th at our meeting. The Legion Ladies will be serving a pork and sauerkraut dinner
Dennis Hagan , on behalf of the Past Commanders. Legion Nobles, please invite your Ladies to this meeting. The meal costs
$5.00 per person. Past Commanders are free as always. This meal is for Legion of Honor members and their
Adjutant Ladies only! Please fill out your forms and return them for a meal count.
October is chock full of out of town Commander’s Balls! Saturday, October 19th is Jaffa’s Ball. Plenty of time to make it home
on Saturday the 20th for the Rajah Shrine Divan Ladies Jewelry raffle! Friday, October 26th is Syria’s Commander’s Ball and the
very next day is Zem Zem’s Ball. This works out well for the travelers, Friday attending Syria’s Ball then up Saturday morning and
heading for Erie to attend their Commander’s Ball. A busy weekend but a fun one indeed!
The Lebanon VA Burger Burn was well received by the shut-in Veterans. Chairman Barry Weisser reported around 100 people
were served by the Rajah Nobles and a handful from Zembo. They deserve a hardy Thank You for volunteering for such a worthwhile
cause. I’m sure this event will be done next year so think about getting involved!
November is fast approaching and that means NOMINATIONS! We’ll need a third Vice Commander. Our incoming Commander
will be picking his appointed Officers also. A very exciting time and Nominations Officer, PC, PMC Scott Miller will be intently
eyeing the crowd for a good prospect! My advice, don’t make eye contact!!!!
STRING BAND
Greetings from your String Band,
Hope everyone had a great summer. It sure was a hot and wet one!
We had a work weekend for the parade float on August 18 & 19. New lights were installed, work done
on the sound system, and the new generator was installed and bugs were worked out. The interior of the
float was cleaned and painted, and some of the exterior was touched up. It looks great! Thanks to everyone
that used their time and talents to make the float look like new again.
A music committee was formed consisting of Kermit Ohlinger, Bill Bechtel and myself to work on
putting together a new parade music book. We will keep some of the old songs but add some new. The
Larry Christman new songs will be transposed for all instruments. With the busy upcoming parade season, we will probably
introduce this new format to the group and begin rehearsals during the winter break to be ready for the
March Circus.
The parade gods were looking down on us for the Shenandoah parade. It was a beautiful day, no rain and low humidity. We had
a great turn out of musicians, the float looks great, we sounded great and there was a good crowd of spectators. We drove past the
place where the best kielbasa in PA is made.
Don’t miss the upcoming String Band Picnic on Sept 30 at the Complex. Joann has worked hard organizing it and many of the
past Potes will be attending. The String Band will be playing, so bring your instruments.
We all had a great time at MASA this year. Congratulations to the String Band for taking first place trophy in the Parade.
See you at the fall parades.
Remember...there is always an open invitation for musicians to play in the String Band. Rehearsals are the second Wednesday
of each month at 7 p.m. at the Complex.
With the support of our Ladies, our purpose is that we might play our instruments so that someday a physically challenged child
may walk and play again.
PARADE MARSHAL’S LINE-UP
Parade Marshal
Mike Quinn
Greetings from your Parade Marshal! A big “Tip of the Fez” to all the Nobles that participated in
the MASA Parade at Virginia Beach. We were 12 Units and Clubs strong. Our Rajah Contingency
definitely made an impressive showing and made our Potentate extremely proud!
This year’s competition was very tough, my congratulations to the Chanters, Concert Band,
String Band, Legion of Honor and Arab Patrol who brought home trophies. With that being said,
every Unit and Club was a big winner and should be very happy with the way we represented Rajah.
In the coming months, I will get together with the Units and Clubs to discuss their score sheets.
Unfortunately, the Tin Lizzies were not able to make the pilgrimage this year and they were
missed. Hopefully they will be able to be there with us next year! Also missing was your other
Parade Marshal, Dave Turner. Dave has made that walk with me for 9 years and wasn’t able to be
there this year. Again, hopefully he will be able to join us next year.
Your “new kid on the block” Erich Pfahl, did an outstanding job of getting everyone lined up
and kept in step as we made the stroll down Atlantic Avenue. For his first year, he acted like a
seasoned vet. Keep up the good work Erich.
Most important, I would like to thank our Divan for “looking pretty darn sharp” on their float.
You set the tone for the parade of “Having Fun” and it showed! Illustrious Sir Jared, was that a tear
in your eye, or just sweat, when you looked back at all the Units before we started?
A HUGE THANK YOU TO OUR FIRST LADY KIM
AND ALL OUR LADIES “IN PINK” THAT LINED
THE PARADE ROUTE AND CHEERED FOR US. IT
WAS TERRIFIC TO SEE AND HEAR ALL OF YOU!
ALL IN ALL, IT TRULY WAS A GREAT DAY TO BE A
SHRINER, ESPECIALLY A RAJAH SHRINER!
And last, as you read above, our Arab Patrol brought home
a trophy. Yes, you read that correctly. After being missing for
many years, they were part of this year’s parade. This idea came
in part from listening to Ill. Sir Jared talk about the importance
of supporting the Units and Club within the Shrine.
In keeping with that premise and the “Genie” theme of the
Illustrious’ year, I had the idea that there was no better way to
lead this year’s parade than with the Arab Patrol, Rajah Shrine’s
oldest Unit. With the help of Ill. Sir Ron Rapp and the permission
of the Arab Patrol President Frank Einsel, I was able to put the
Unit to good use. A special thank you to Glenn Wolfe and Joel
Franco for helping me, make that happen, even if Joel’s sash
was a little too big! On a personal note, I rocked those red pants!
If you are looking to join a Unit that is rooted deep in Shrine
customs and pageantry, like to march in Parades and stand
Ceremonial Guard, then the Arab Patrol is the Unit for you!
In closing I leave you with this thought, “What does it
mean to be your Parade Marshal?” It means you have to be an
organizer, an adapter, a director, a parking place finder, a take
charge and accept “no excuses” person, a float builder, a buffer,
and lastly, it’s the guy who had a big smile on his face as he
began the Parade! It’s a special job, one that Erich, Dave and I
take very seriously and like those who served before us, are very
proud and honored to represent all of you!
Life Changes
Yo
our priorities change,
Your needs change,
Your idea of a perfect home changes.
You don’t have to go it alone… I can help!
MASA FOOTNOTE:
STORY OF THE
BLENDER
BY JOHN GRUMBEIN,
DIRECTOR, RAJAH ORIENTAL BAND
Many people at the MASA Convention this year
noticed a Noble carrying what looked like a beat-up
old garbage bag with something inside. That Noble
was Dennis Guignet, Sr, newly-elected Sgt. at Arms
of the Mid-Atlantic Shrine Oriental Band Association,
and the something inside the bag was the notorious
M.A.S.O.B.A. Blender.
People ask, “Why are you carrying a blender around
with you everywhere you go and protecting it with your
life?”
Here's the story.
Back in the 1960s when the whiskey sour became a
popular drink, the officers and ladies of the Association
often had them in their hospitality rooms. It became a
hassle to mix them individually, so someone came up
with the idea of purchasing a blender so they could be
mixed properly and in quantity.
and Ted Werkheiser
After purchasing a blender, the next problem was how to
transport it from one function to another. You must consider
that in those days there were at least 15 to 20 functions per
year for M.A.S.O.B.A. Many times, they would have their own
hotel and hospitality room at conventions. That's big! It was
suggested that whoever was at the bottom of the elected line,
the Sgt. at Arms, would carry the blender to each function.
Sometimes the Sgt. at Arms forgot to bring the blender
along. This posed another problem. What can be done so he
remembers to bring it along. It was suggested that he would be
fined at least $5.00 for not having it with him. Therefore, the
rule was made that the Sgt. at Arms would have the blender
with him at all times at any M.A.S.O.B.A. event just in case
someone wanted a whiskey sour. If he did not have it, it would
cost him $5.00. All the fine money was turned over to the
Ladder of Smiles for the Shrine Hospitals.
Over the years, the blender has been stolen and returned
for a ransom of $5.00. Therefore, it is imperative that the Sgt.
at Arms not leave the blender out of his sight. Anything that
gets done to the blender is considered “defacing” and is subject
to a fine. If the bag gets changed, and this one is ready, it’s
considered defacing the carrying case and subject to a fine.
All of this is in good fun and there are no hard feelings.
Nobody ever went broke because he carried the blender.
The tradition lives on even though the number of functions
has dwindled from 15 to 20 to 3 per year.
There you have it. The end result is the kids are the big
winners from our fun.

CONCERT BAND
Christmas is coming.
When you think of Christmas, visions of trumpets and
trombones probably dance in your head. But what about
tubas? One Christmas tradition in Berks County is literally
“booming.”
“Holiday Happenings” hosted by our Scottish Rite
Masons opens its doors to holiday fun with a kick off
Bryan Snyder on Saturday, December 1st featuring the Reading Area
TubaChristmas. This is a free public event. TubaChristmas®
Coordinator, Bryan Snyder and Heavy Metal Band Conductor,
Charles Runkle hope to promote over 100 players this year. It’s a special anniversary
celebrating over 25 years of performing TubaChristmas in Reading, PA.
Over the past year, there has been over 600 spectators for this Saturday night
Christmas Concert at West Reading’s Scottish Rite Cathedral. But there is always something a little off -- a little unusual -- about
this show. That's because all the instruments here -- all 100 or so of them -- are tubas and euphoniums.
“It's actually really neat. You don't typically get to hear the tuba play the melody line.” This is “A Tuba Christmas,” where anyone
with said instrument can get on stage and join in. “It’s open invitation,” says Tuba Christmas coordinator Bryan Snyder. The tuba’s
booming baritone typically plays “second fiddle,” so to speak, to the other instruments. “It's a different sound. You're thinking…
Well, tubas -- how can they sound for Christmas? But they actually make it so nice and mellow."
Tuba players say their beloved instrument doesn't get enough credit for its versatility.
“The tuba has a very wide range. Ordinarily we play, ‘Oompah oompah oompah oompah,’ but on Christmas we get to play
melodies.” And the growing crowds here seem to agree.
In the earlier years, the Reading TubaChristmas was hosted in Berks County's Grings Mill Barn. But the event got too popular
and the fire marshal kind of kicked us out because we got too big for the barn.
Fans say this new venue is the perfect Christmas present. “It's a lot more open. You don't have to sit so scrunched together.”
Tuba Christmas concerts are promoted in over 200 cities nationally. The Harvey Philips Foundation began the 1st Tuba Christmas
in Rockefeller Center, New York City in 1974.
Running from 5 to 8 p.m. at the cathedral, 310 S.7th Ave, West Reading, the event is
free and open to the public. More holiday events will happen Sunday December 2nd and on
the following weekend. Holiday Happenings includes large model train displays - in Z, N,
HO, O and D gauge models - with lavish scenery, and 8-by-26-foot village made entirely
of LEGOS, a fish pond for the kiddies, a display of Hiram’s Scottish Riders Motorcycles,
removable tattoos for children, and a live Nativity outside of the main entrance.
Santa Claus is also expected to make an appearance. Mark your calendars and bring
along your tuba players.
ORIENTAL BAND
The big question, “Do you think it will rain today?” The bigger question, “Do you think it will stop
raining long enough to see the sun for a while?” What a summer it has been. So much rain there isn’t
enough time to do anything but mow the lawn. Well, almost not enough time.
The Pote’s Picnic turned out to be a great success. This was the first time it was held at our complex.
There was much planning and moving of equipment to be done to be able to pull it off. The new trailer
purchased by the Motor Corps and Oriental Band from their horse race fund was delivered just in time
to make its maiden voyage from South End Gun Club to Rajah Shrine loaded with steamers, grills and
anything else that could be packed into it. This saved the cost of renting a truck to do the same thing. Great
donation to the complex Nobles! A big tip of the fez to the Pote’s Picnic committee and all the Nobles
and ladies who helped out at the event. Congratulations to all the newly made Nobles who came in at the
John Grumbein
picnic!
A little more than a week later the Pote’s Ball was held. Another job to use the trailer to haul decorations.
The ballroom at the hotel was decorated in an Arabian Nights theme. Those of you who were there can attest it was a great evening.
Mic and Beth, how do you come up with these ideas? A shout out to the Ball committee for all their help and the hospitality
committee for the food and beverages.
We have now returned from the MASA convention in Virginia Beach. Luck was on our side all week as there was not any
substantial rain until it was time to go home. Brad and Dawn and their committee did a superb job of keeping the hospitality room
stocked and Ted Werkheiser made sure the camel’s milk was always cold and flowing. The Oriental Band float was used as the
Divan float in the Parade. Sorry the trees on the float didn’t provide much shade. Congratulations to all the units that won awards!
At MASA the Oriental Band Association had their annual meeting and election of officers. Noble Donald Heimbecker, Sr.
was elected as 1st vice president of the association and Noble Dennis Guignet Sr. was elected as Sgt. at Arms and Guardian of the
Blender. Noble John Grumbein retained his position as Secretary / Treasurer.
The Oriental Band meets the first Tuesday of the month at the Coplay Seangerbund (yes, that’s in Coplay, PA) at 7 p.m. For
more information on the Band, contact John Grumbein at 610-395-6578 or jkgrumbein@aol.com.
GOING BEYOND THE CALL
Frank Snyder spreading stone to create clam
The Pote’s Picnic was a great success. Committee chairman
Joel Franco wishes to thank the many volunteers who worked on
the event. It was the first time for the picnic at the complex and
to make it happen some new areas had to be created.
That is where Noble Frank Snyder came to the rescue. Frank
brought his equipment and expertise to the project by grading
five tons of stone for the new clam steamer area. He also used
his front end loader to move 100 cement blocks to create a
foundation for the steamers.
Frank’s donation of time, effort and equipment helped make
the transition from the gun club to the complex a viable reality.
Thanks, Noble Frank.
The club began our fall season of baking wet bottom shoofly pies after MASA. We
bake on the first and third Mondays of the month at St John’s Church in Farmersville.
We’re selling pies at local events, small businesses, assisted living facilities and at
Boscov’s in the Palmer Mall in Easton. Club President Bruce Johnson oversees the
bakes with help from his lady, Sally.
And finally, we’d like to welcome our newest Tin Lizzie Richard Stefanovic
from Saylorsburg. At 6 foot, five, he just fits into the car. Richard comes to us from
Lodge 594 in Pen Argyl. Welcome to the club, Richard.
THE CHAPLAIN’S STUDY
“The man for others.” That was the phrase that Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a famous Lutheran theologian,
gave to Jesus.
Jesus said, “I have come not to be served but to serve.” This is what Jesus did through his life and it is
the major model for each of us as well, we are to serve and are not be served. Jesus made this clear in His
teachings to his followers; men and women of faith are to be there for others.
If we are to understand this we must affirm the reality that only God is the source of meaning for our lives.
God the source of fullness
Not money and possessions
Not a prestigious position
Not a huge home in the suburbs
We cannot measure our lives by what we have accomplished or accumulated for ourselves.
God sees a life as accomplished by its character, which is its quality. We see our lives by quantity.
It is this Ethic that causes Christianity to be rejected by so many people, they measure their worth upon what they have
accumulated, and accomplished, not by the quality of the life they have lived.
Our human instinct is to rule over other people and accumulate as much as we can and not to serve others but to expect others
to serve us and follow our orders. That is why this basic ethic of Christianity is so difficult for the world to understand. This ethic
goes against our human instinct, and we want to rule our lives and the lives of others, we want to do for ourselves.
The true fullness of life is in God’s amazing grace. It is this Grace that makes us the whole person that God intends us to be. Only
to the degree to which we accept God’s amazing grace do our
Possessions
Careers
Daily activities
take on any meaning as we seek God’s amazing grace by prayer, meditation, reading scripture, and through worship in our
community of believers. The best journey to God is through the outward expression of our faith. We must love one another as he
has loved us.
HOSPITAL SERVICES
The summer months were very warm, and we
experienced a considerable amount of rain and
even flooding in some areas. The weather however
did not prevent the Hospital Services Unit from
participating in a series of events and activities.
Our combined picnic with the Chanters and Past
Masters was a success with nearly eighty Nobles and
Ladies in attendance. We completed phase two of the
renovations of our parade float and were excited about
the possibility of having it in the parade in Virginia
Beach at MASA. Unfortunately, this did not happen due to the unavailability
of driver(s) and vehicle(s) to pull it. We encourage Nobles who can help us to
please contact us.
We did however have a vehicle in the parade at MASA and were proud
to represent our unit and Rajah Shrine. We conducted a successful MASA
raffle and wish to extend our sincere appreciation to all the Nobles, Ladies
and patrons for your support. A tip of the fez and congratulations to the
winners: Paul Bedway, Dale Dougherty, Sam Ellis, Carl Frey, Naomi DeTurk,
Dennis Hagan, Marie Miller, Joan Rapp, Jan Reis, and Terry Hulsizer. At our
quarterly meeting we welcomed new member John Pavlick. We are growing
in membership and would like to extend an invitation to all Nobles to come
out and join us at our quarterly daytime luncheon meetings at the complex.
