Creative Heritage is a manifesto for the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018. It
represents a call for us to forge connections between cultural heritage as things and
spaces on the one hand, and as ideas and people on the other. Creative Heritage
demands that cultural heritage be creatively protected and used and viewed as a
basis and springboard for creating something new. Creative Heritage demonstrates
how cultural heritage can provide an impetus for integrating the society and designing
the cities of tomorrow. “We are campaigning to integrate cultural heritage into
creative development,” writes UNESCO Chair Filipe Barata, one of the forty-two
authors of the book and sponsor of the Creative Heritage initiative. Creative urban
planners, architects, and artists, as well as creative experts on society, economy, and
ecology, have drawn up the Hannover Creative Heritage Agenda with the support of
the Volkswagen Foundation. It is the starting point for an international platform for
experimental, pioneering projects and new concepts, with which twenty-two universities
in Europe and Latin America are already involved. The book Creative Heritage
represents voices from this initiative, which brings together cultural heritage, urbanism,
and creativity.
