2018 PLAYOFFS SECOND ROUND REMATCH
FRONTS BATTLE COLTS FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2018 PLAYOFFS SERIES
Less than six months ago the Barrie Colts and
Kingston Frontenacs battled for a spot in the
Eastern Conference Final. Barrie jumped out to
a 2-0 series lead before Kingston stormed back
with 4 straight wins to to claim the spot in the
next round. Coming into the game this afternoon,
both teams look a lot different on paper
than they did in that series, but the players that
are still here are ready to go for round two.
Two players that played a huge role in that
series for Kingston were Ryan Cranford and Tyler
Burnie. They were tasked with shutting down
the top line of the Colts which included names
like Luchuk and Svechnikov. Both players are
back this season, but will be looking to add a
little more offense to the Kingston lineup rather
than resuming their shut down role.
The Colts return to Kingston missing their entire
top line from that playoff series with all three
players graduating to professional leagues. Even
with those players gone, the Colts can still score
goals. Ryan Suzuki has had a brilliant start to his
second year in the OHL. He entered play this
weekend with 11 points in just 4 games. Lucas
Chiodo has also stepped it up on the scoresheet
recording 8 points in his first 4 games.
Kingston will get to face Barrie in the loca-
tion they want them. Including the playoff series
from last year, the Frontenacs have won 6 in a
row at the Leon’s Centre over the Colts. October
7th hasn’t been Kingston’s favorite day to play
on. In 17 games played on this date, the franchise
is 6-10-1 all-time, but they have won 4 of
the last 5 at home. KF

For Kingston Frontenacs rookie goalie Ryan Dugas
pitching a shutout on the road in his first Ontario
Hockey League game and being named the first star
may be a hard accomplishment to top.
On Saturday, Dugas, 17, stopped all 27 shots
that came his way earning Kingston a 4-0 win over
the Erie Otters.
The Frontenacs are at home this weekend at the
Leon’s Centre with a game Friday night at 7 p.m.
against the Soo Greyhounds and Sunday at 2 p.m.
against the Barrie Colts.
Dugas said after practice at the Leon’s Centre
on Wednesday that the shutout was something he’ll
never forget.
“It was a great experience,” he said.
“A lot of guys on the team really helped me out,”
he said. “If you go back and watch the game I’m
sure you’ll see at least 12 shots that were blocked.”

“It seemed like every time, someone was out
there at least trying to block a shot and a lot of the
time they were successful with that.”
Dugas couldn’t remember any big saves he
made, especially late in the game, to preserve the
shutout.
“It got pretty hectic at the end, it seemed like
they were in our end the last five minutes or it just
seemed like that because I was so stressed I guess.”
The shutout was in the back of his mind but
Dugas tried not to think about it until the final buzzer.
After just the one game Dugas stands first in
goals against average and save percentage.
Veteran Brendan Bonello has played the bulk of
the games so far this season, starting four of the five
games the Frontenacs have played. In all three of
Bonello’s losses he’s allowed 10 goals and has kept
the team in all games he’s played.
In the first game of the season on September 20,
a 4-0 loss to Peterborough, the Frontenacs were

trailing 1-0 going into the third period. In his 3-1
loss to Niagara last Friday, Kingston was again down
by just one goal heading into the last period.
During the Frontenacs opening night 5-2 win
over Oshawa on September 21, Bonello shutout the
Generals in the first period.
The only slow start he’s had so far this season was
his last game in Mississauga against the Steelheads
on Sunday, where two of the three he allowed were
first period goals in a 4-1 loss.
Despite Bonello’s one win and three loss record
so far this season he sports a goals against average
of 3.03. and a save percentage of .915, good for
10th in the league.
“I think it’s been a good start so far on a personal
level,” Bonello said after practice on Wednesday.
“The team success is going to come later on, I think
we haven’t played to the standard we wanted to but
I think it’s all a learning curve right now and I think
soon enough it will come and we’ll be hitting our
stride.”
Last season with the Frontenacs Bonello, 19,
from Mississauga, only got into parts of 11 games
behind starter Jeremy Helvig.
He had come to Kingston last season after a
trade from Saginaw.
Bonello said he worked hard over the summer
reducing his body fat and adding muscle while
maintaining the same weight as last year knowing
he’d probably get most of the playing time this
season.
He also refined his game over the summer
months.
“I worked with our Kingston goalie coaches
[David and Marco Franco] in Toronto all summer
long and I think that helped.”
Frontenacs coach Kurtis Foster said both goalies
have been playing great so far this season.
“Brendan Bonello has come in and shown us
he’s a capable guy in this league,” he said. “I think
the last couple of years for him were trying and he
didn’t get the opportunity he was looking for and this
year he’s earned everything he’s got.”
Foster called Dugas’ shutout “an amazing
achievement.”
“We played a solid game in front of him and

sometimes when you have a younger kid going in
everybody wants to see him get the win so everybody
worked a little harder that night.”
Foster said the coaching staff hasn’t decided who
will play this weekend or if the duties will be shared.
“We’ll see what gives us the best chance to
win this weekend but I think at the end of the day
probably both deserve to get a chance.”
Foster also can’t say yet how the playing time will
be divided up this season.
“Right now as you can see from the way it’s been
that Brandon’s got the bulk of the work so far and
mostly because he’s earned it and he’s been able to
play strong games which has helped us and Ryan
is going to get his chance and if he continues to
play that way he’s going to make the decision hard
on me.”
Dugas was selected in the fourth round of the
2017 OHL Priority Selection and spent last season
close to his Hamilton home with the Ancaster
Avalanche in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey
League where he put up good numbers including
a 2.01 goals against average in the regular season
and a 1.50 average in nine playoff games.
Dugas said playing on a junior team close to
home as a 16-year-old was a good transition to
playing for the Frontenacs this year.
“The main thing playing junior last year and
getting sent down was getting adjusted to playing
with older guys, playing 20 minute periods, having
intermissions between every period, having the
warmup before every game and coming back in the
dressing room.
“It’s a big difference from minor hockey as
especially being a goalie I have a lot of things I have
to do and there’s a whole new routine.”
Dugas said his parents were in the stands in Erie
to see his shutout.
“My mom was crying, my dad was almost crying.”
They were really proud of me and really happy.”
“It was definitely something I’ll never forget.”

PREVENT THE COLTS FROM GAINING MOMENTUM
Entering the weekend, Barrie was an all or nothing
team. They had two wins and two losses. In their
two wins they put up 9 and 10 goals. In there two
losses they put up 2 goals in each game. If they
start feeling confident on offence, the Colts can put
up some big numbers, but if they are kept in check
they are a beatable team. Kingston isn’t built to win
high scoring games, so they need to make sure the
Colts don’t catch fire.
KEEP THE STREAK ALIVE
Going back to last years playoff series, Kingston
has won 4 straight games against the Colts. Both
teams have seen their rosters change since that
series with many of the stars graduating from
the OHL and being replaced by rookies. The
remaining players from that playoff series have
created a bit of a rivalry. The returning players for
Kingston will be looking to prove that their series
win was no fluke, while the returning Barrie
players will be looking for redemption.
HAVE A GOALIE STEP UP
There will be 4 goalies dressed for this game
and no matter which ones get the starts,
there is an argument to be made for a lack
of experience. The Barrie Colts will dress two
goalies that have a combined total of 25 OHL
games, while the Frontenacs dress two goalies
that combine for 42 games of experience.
Brendan Bonello is by far the most experienced
goalie of the group with 41 appearances. All 4
goalies have something to prove and whoever
does the best job of that today will give their
team the best chance to win.

Jason Robertson wasn’t born in what is
considered a “hockey hot bed”. Born on July
22, 1999 in Arcadia, California, Robertson may
have been expected to play baseball, or football,
but he was naturally gifted at hockey and his
family recognized that early on.
Initially, they moved to Michigan to allow Jason
to play at a higher level. In his OHL draft year,
Jason joined the Don Mills Flyers of the GTMMHL
which marked his first time playing for a Canadian
based team. That move allowed scouts to see
more of Jason, and the Frontenacs decided to
the second round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.
A year later they would sign him to his entry level
contract.
He came back to Kingston after being drafted
and continued to do what he was doing the year
before. He put up a career high 87 points and
went over the 40 goal plateau for the second time
in his career. In the playoffs he scored a career
best 10 goals and tied his previous career best of
18 points.
Robertson is returning to Kingston this season
as one of the veteran players and he has been
spend their 4th round pick to select him in the
2015 OHL Priority Selection.
As a 16 year old, Robertson made the
Frontenacs roster and contributed immediately.
He scored 18 goals in his rookie season and
people quickly started to see that he was a natural
goal scorer. As a rookie, his ice-time in the playoffs
was limited but he did record his first OHL playoff
goal in the 4 games he played.
The following season Robertson made a name
for himself. He led the Frontenacs in scoring by 30
points. He scored 42 goals finishing tied for 6th in
the OHL. When playoff time rolled around, there
was no question that he would be a key contributor
for Kingston and he delivered. In just 11 games,
Robertson put up 18 points which put him 13th in
OHL scoring during the playoffs despite Kingston
being eliminated in the second round.
The Dallas Stars were huge fans of what they
saw out of Robertson and they selected him in

named an Assistant Captain for the second year in
a row. Kingston will be expecting a lot of goals out of
the fan favorite, but perhaps even more important
than that is his leadership in the dressing room
with a young core group on the roster.

COACHING STAFF
After a 15 year pro career, including 10 in the NHL, Kurtis Foster started his coaching career with the Peterborough Petes.
After a season as an Assistant Coach with the Petes, he made the move to Kingston to be an Assistant Coach to Jay
Varady. Kurtis was promoted to Head Coach for the 2018-19 season after Varady was hired by the Tucson Roadrunners
of the AHL.
Luca Caputi played 8 years of pro hockey and immediately joined the coaching ranks following his playing career, as an Assistant
Coach with the Guelph Storm for the 2015-16 season. After three season in Guelph, he made the move to Kingston and was
named Associate Coach of the Frontenacs this past July.
Phil Mangan played in the OHL for the Ottawa 67’s and Kingston Frontenacs before moving to the QMJHL in 2006 to join the
Moncton Wildcats. He finished his junior career with the St John’s Fog Devils. After a number of seasons in the ECHL, Mangan
joined the Kingston Frontenacs as an Assistant Coach for the 2016-17 season.
