AGHS celebrates 90 years<br />

AVONSIDE GIRLS’ High School<br />

celebrates 90 years of girls’<br />

education this year.<br />

To commemorate this special<br />

anniversary the school held a<br />

birthday party and a had a special<br />

visit from 100 -year- old past<br />

student Beryl Newman.<br />

The celebration started in true<br />

party spirit with a carnival style<br />

celebration at lunch time.<br />

The day featured party food,<br />

music, a bouncy castle, facepainting,<br />

games, visits from<br />

Party Ponies and stilt walkers.<br />

The party was followed by a<br />

commemorative assembly on the<br />

front lawn.<br />

Mrs Newman, who was a<br />

student at the school in 1931 cut<br />

a birthday cake with head girl<br />

Emma van Grinsven.<br />

Students also had the opportunity<br />

to listen to stories from past<br />

students Patricia Turner, Patsy<br />

Wardell, Vicki Summerfield and<br />

Sandy Kent.<br />

Te Wai Pounamu past principal<br />

Reihana Parata talked about the<br />

lives of students who boarded<br />

with her and attended Avonside.<br />

The assembly ended with a<br />

fashion parade of past uniforms<br />

and a slice of birthday cake.<br />

Children in New Brighton<br />

were kept busy last week trying<br />

their hand in crafts, sports and<br />

baking.<br />

More than 80 children took<br />

part in the Youth Alive Trust<br />

holiday programme.<br />

They baked “salt dough<br />

creations,” learnt new<br />

gymnastic skills at Taiora: QE<br />

II Recreation and Sport Centre<br />

and visited Inflatable World.<br />
